S.Y. Chew was being diplomatic and polite, not wanting to appear adversarial and belligerently rude (like Tom Cotton). Unfortunately, to types like Cotton, civilized responses only appear "weak" to them and Cotton types need to have responses more like those from Kim Huat to put them in their places (as barbarians) - similar to what happened to Anthony Blinken with the Chinese trade delegation in Alaska (remember that incident?).

I think the insulting word “stinking turtle” addressed to Cotton was actually means “stinking ghost”. The Chinese words for turtle and ghost sounds very similar. Calling someone a ghost means the person is subhuman.
