What is ironic is that under his great leadership in 1995-96, around 3 million North Koreans starved to death. Reportedly that power station he is so proudly touring has been offline since 1998 nearly all the time due to lack of fuel and parts.

Instead, NK spins and distorts true facts to their advantage. For example, Stalin and Mao would lie outright and say that the annual harvests were wildly successful, even as people were starving to death. The Kim Regime, on the other hand, acknowledges that their people are hungry and suffering, but blames it on outsiders or foreign governments (the US, South Korea, Japan, the UN, etc.) instead of taking responsibility for their own greed and incompetence.

The use of the word "famine " is wrong . This period in the DPRK is referred to as the "ardouous march " and "forced march " . Famine means an extreme and general shortage of food affecting the whole country . Using the term "famine" lumps the DPRK with places like Somalia and Ethiopia . We visited the DPRK in 1996 and saw no one starving or begging for food

The provinces were in different stages of the famine. While the most northern provinces were on famine stage 3 and more, some southern provinces were on stage 1-2. The 90's famine in DPRK was category E famine: catastrophic famine. The regime distributed rations unevenly, favoring certain areas. Also employment status of parents affected frequency of rations, if one wasn't able to work anymore the regime cut rations worsening the famine.

False, there was the massive catastrophic natural disasters that killed a majority of farm land... The bombing during the war by the US bombers purposely destroyed dams/bridges and farmlands to starve the Koreans. The report on the bombing was describe as a nuclear bomb going off. The collapse of the Soviet Union destroyed the trade for all socialist countries and further isolating the DPRK. Yet through all this hardships and bloodshed, the DPRK has risen above what was expected of them and continuely following the socialist revolution in spite of the US imperialists say about them. Soviet union collapsed and couldn't provide crops to NK, also China faced food shortages, leaving NK to their "juche". Food was short and famine was widespread. Rations were cut and stopped altogether from most of the population. Food that the regime had was concentrated to the military and the upper class to avoid uprise.

The Vietnam War killed _way more people_ and _way more recently,_ and arguably involved the the use of chemical weapons (depending on what your opinions on Agent Orange are). And yet Vietnam didn't suffer a famine after the Vietnam War. Why? Because they rapidly _de_-collectivized their farms and allowed farmers to privately own their plots, which incentivized profit-motivated modernization of farming techniques and thus increased farm productivity. North Korea, on the other hand, insisted on sticking with their anachronistic collectivized farming system (which even the Cubans abandoned long ago) which meant that farmers couldn't earn any more from good harvests and thus demotivated them from improving their farming practices. That and the Kim Regime insisted on instituting standardized, uniform farming techniques across the entire country (as this video _proudly_ admits) with no regard for regional differences in soil quality, climatic conditions, etc. Regions that were ideal for growing wheat and potatoes were instructed to grow rice instead, which led to poorer harvests. Look up the interview with Edward Reed (a humanitarian and agricultural expert who actually worked in North Korea with the local authorities during the famine) on the Korea Now podcast. He describes in detail how North Korea systemically wrecked their agricultural system in the years _before_ the famine, and how they consistently refused to obey or accept any foreign advice on how to improve it afterward.

One of the ways it has sought to do this is by promising to respect South Korea's business/property rights and adopt capitalism if they reunify with NK. Whether or not NK is telling the truth is not important; it wants the South Koreans to believe that their assets will be safe in union with North Korea. So by praising North Korea for "continuing its socialist revolution" you contradict NK's own messaging to SK and make it less likely that the South Koreans will trust and believe them. (As well as help to scare foreign businesses away from ever wanting to invest in the country like I previously mentioned.) The world DID contribute a lot of food aid to North Korea during the famine. But like *all* foreign aid given to dictatorships, it never actually reached the poor people. It instead went to the rich and powerful.

@@davidstrelec6065, read the book "Famine in North Korea" by Marcus Noland and Steph Haggard, which is widely considered to be the seminal book of the topic. (It was even praised by Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz) The UN gave several hundreds of thousands of TONS of food, fuel, medicine and other forms of humanitarian aid to North Korea EVERY YEAR during the late 1990s and early 2000s. (And the US was actually the single largest donor during several of those years) The reason so many people died is because the North Korean regime was diverting and embezzling that aid on a massive scale; they were either hording it for political loyalists, or selling it on the black market for profit. The amount of theft and abuse of humanitarian aid by the North Korean government was so severe that Doctors Without Borders quit their operations in North Korea in protest, and urged other humanitarian agencies to do the same. Also read the book "The Cleanest Race" by BR Myers, who is widely regarded as one of the best North Korea specialists in the world. Another reason why the North Korean government withheld so much aid from the people was to create a crisis in order to legitimize Kim Jong Il. North Korea's beloved founder, Kim Il Sung, had just died, and Kim Jong Il knew he didn't garner the same amount of loyalty and respect as his father did. (Many North Koreans regarded KJI as an effite and spoiled prince, and didn't consider him "leader material".) KJI calculated that if he starved enough of his people, but then blamed it on America, he could trick the people into flocking to him for comfort and protection. (Want proof?
