Too be honest I'm not a big PlayStation fan but you were right with rage racer. I loved ridge racer revolution and sorta tekken 2... some will say driver which pushed the system to the limit which i certainly enjoyed in the day - but i prefer games these days that stay within the PlayStation limits. Aka destruction Derby (even tho in the day I only had the Saturn version....oooh i know...) and the sequel too. Much love K.J Ps. I played the hell out of the demo of metal gear solid. "Huh? What was that noise??"

Brilliant time for this video to drop. I set up DuckStation on my phone after a stay in hospital a month ago and have done the same now on my PC. Playing the classics I remember from back in the day. I completed Wild Arms (although I want to get 100pct on retroachievements, so still have some stuff to do) which is one of the best RPGs of all time imo. I'm now planning on winning Toca Touring Cars on Expert in the Renault Laguna. Thanks Kim.

So Kim, loved your 100 rundown and have grabbed absolutely tonnes of games based on your recommendations... Now let me add two of my own, and I promise you you won't be disappointed. I can only imagine these games weren't on your top 100 because you haven't played them. - Wild Arms. Looks like Alundra, as epic as FF. An absolute masterpiece, I implore you to play it. - Sheep, Dog and Wolf (Looney Tunes Sheep Raider in North America) Brilliantly done fun stealth game with all the classic characters and tonnes of charm, really quite unique. There are a tonne of PSX RPGs that I'm yet to play which I've grabbed based on recommendations. I want to play them all over the next year or so now I'm on a roll with this stuff again. I'm so impressed with DuckStation - I usually go to my PS1 connected to a little 14" CRT but with DuckStation I'm connected to my HDTV with a load of filters and clever stuff active and it looks simply amazing, it's how it looked in our minds eye back then when fresh. I've got an 8bitdo Pro 2 I'm using on both my PC and with a clip for my phone when I'm mobile. I went through the whole of Wild Arms over the course of a couple of weeks out and about staying away from home. All the best Kim, your time dedicated to this classic time in our lives never fails to bring a smile to my face!

FF7 also is my favorite game of all time. My best friend and I picked up our pre-order copies at Best Buy and had our 14-year-old brains melted by the magnitude of it. It was a watershed moment for video game storytelling. And, to this day, no game has come close to giving me the feeling this game gave me with its characters and story.

Yeah I feel the same I was a few years younger. I got so invested in the characters (I have never been since) so of course I cried when you know who died, I had fallen for this imaginary character. And from then on I was drawing fan art and doing fan fiction for FF7 while in middle school. Sadly the game got turned out by Square and it became a meme over time

Nice list and very nice to see someone unafraid to put the best game at no. 1. I feel it’s become somewhat fashionable in recent history to say FFVII is overhyped. Since there is only so much you can play, I’m guessing you’ve never played any of the following games since they could easily make this list. FFIX (No. 2 in my list of FF games) Circuit Breakers (The best Micro Machines style game) Croc (Often overlooked due to Crash and Spyro) Demolition Racer (The pinnacle of Destruction Derby style games) Little Big Adventure (A game that very few people have played which leads to it being massively overlooked) Warhammer: Dark Omen (A fun RTS that wasn’t widely played either)

Excelent video as always, but just a little observation, tempest x3 was a semi-port (if you can call it that) of tempest 2000 in atari jaguar by interplay and had nothing to do with jeff minter as minter himself critices the game at the time for various reasons and the fact that none of its input and/or ideas from tempest 2000 were converted correctly to ps1 (tempest 2000 its the definitve tempest in my opinion but x3 its not bad), anyway excelent video and a big thumbs up, greetings from Venezuela.

For Silent Bomber, did you know you can directly place bombs on the enemies? Holding the button brings up a targeting reticle, if you manage to get the end of it over an enemy it will lock on, and then you can tap the button repeatedly to attach the bombs.

Brilliant list! I think it's telling of our slightly different ages because I was 6-10 when I originally owned and played my PlayStation. As such I think my faves reflect that: Kula World - One of the first 3D games I ever played and the graphics and physics of this "world" blew my mind as a kid and it still holds a place in my heart. Crash 3: One of the few games I not only completed, but actually bothered trying to get the hidden collectables. As a total non-completionist, it's really saying something. CTR: You basically said all that needs saying in the vid. Spyro 3 - My favourite of the Spyro series. Colourful, varied gameplay and I got to play a little dragon charging at guys and breathing fire. The other characters and NPCs were really fun and memorable, too. MediEvil 1&2 - Great action-adventure fun where I played a skeleton. Yes, yes, yessss. Micro Machines V3 - My other favourite racing game on the system. I still remember many of the jingles, the tracks and the fun powerups. And who could forget Cherry's Driving School 😂. Tombi! - swallowing and regurgitating items was never not amusing to child me! Rayman - I still remember the end of level jingle. Brilliant stuff Final Fantasy 9 - This was the only one that appealed to me style-wise as a kid and as blasphemous as it sounds, I've never gone back to play the other two 😬. But I absolutely adore this game, my favourite of the FFs I *have* played Resident Evil 2/Dino Crisis - put together as they're the only more "mature" games I really played on the system back in the day but they were very effective in scaring me. The atmosphere really was good, especially in the latter imo.

Oddly enough hearing the PS magazine tune at the end reminds me most of what I remember the PS1 for: Magazine demos. We had relatively few games, but every month we got that magazine with about 4 or 5 demos on it. MGS, Tombi, Soul Reaver, Syphon Filter, Ape Escape etc... I remember them less as full games and more the one or two levels you got on the PSM cover disc. That said my favorite game this video lacked was without doubt Vagrant Story. It was fiddly to get into, but it was primetime Squaresoft pushing the system to its limits and with a fantastic story to boot!

Tombi had probably the biggest PS1 demo I've ever seen, it let you play up until getting the pig bag from the dwarf elder. I never got to play Vagrant Story until it was on the PS Store and I really like what I've played of it but I don't understand the weapon crafting at all

I was never into consoles and cut my "computing teeth" on the ZX Spectrum and Commodore Amiga - but it's always interesting seeing what I missed out on on the console side of things and there's definitely a few games in your list that I will trying in an emulator or two. But I guess that original PS1 "Mental Wealth" advert did its job on me because I still remember and loathe it as much as I do today as I did back then - definitely in my "Top Ten Most Annoying Ads Of All Time" being just so incredibly "up its own arty-farty bottom". Thank you for all of your great content, especially in what have clearly been some difficult times for you recently.

Great work as always Kim. I remember that one track in Rage Racer where you had to pick that car with a huge top speed, but awful acceleration. It took ages to catch up with the other racers, but once you did, you'd go flying past them. However, you had to make in around the circuit (3 laps I think) without any crashes, or you wouldn't be able to catch up with the other cars again due to the poor acceleration. Was a good challenge that one.

God this video is so good, as always. Not only were the picks amazing and perfectly summarized, but you also surfaced a bunch of stuff deep within my memory that I’m kind of shocked I still remember. That taser in Siphon Filter broke me as a kid. I could not understand how such a weapon existed and if it did why it wasn’t the first choice of every army.

Cheers Kim. Tomb Raider 1 encouraged me to get a PS1, really happy I did. Nice to see Bushido Blade and G Police high up on your list :) I guess personal mentions are in order. I put a lot of time into; Vagrant Story, Assault Rigs, Breath Of Fire 3 and Front Mission 2.

I was obsessed with 3D platformers back in PS1 & N64 era so I spent more time on the N64 than PS1. I realise now that PS1 was the more consistent and objectively better gaming machine but it didn't have Mario 64 or ocarina of time, Banjo or golden eye. MGS, Resi2 Ape Escape, spyro and iss Pro are amazing games and would love to replay Croc again even with the tank controls. So much PS1 nostalgia as an early 3D console

Real nice to see Gekido and Silent Bomber so high up, two great and under-appreciated gems. Also nice to see some love for Heart of Darkness and Klonoa. Big omissions for me are: Soul Reaver Mega Man X4 Monkey Hero (pure nostalgia here) Sheep Dog 'n' Wolf Worms MDK (PC version is probs better but still) Sled Storm Chrono Cross FF9 is the big one for me though, my favourite piece of art in general. Would love to see you do a long-form retrospective for 9 like you did for 7 and 8, just to round off the PS1 trilogy.

In my opinion the PlayStation 1 was the most important console of all time and marked a turning point in gaming and 3d graphics. I didn't even own one but it really was something very special.

Agreed that it was and is a very special console that changed gaming, and even changed society to some extent, but your point about it being the console that single-handedly changed the gaming world is debatable. I say this because the N64 was the first truly popular console capable of lifelike 3D graphics. But I have to admit that the PS1 had a larger and better library. I would also argue that the Pong console was the most important console of all time, simply because it was the first.

3d turning point happened with 3dfx's Voodoo graphics card on PC. All of these games are better looking on it. Just for example look at GTA, it looks horrible on playstation.

Yeah, I loved Pandemonium. First game I completed on PlayStation. Along with X2 shooter it was the most fun I had with the five game pack from Toys R us. It was criticised for not being full 3D, which is a shame as it was very playable and looked great.

I found Road Rash: Jailbreak to be the superior Road Rash game on the PS1. It has an awesome soundtrack filled with west coast garage bands, most of which no longer exist, and it was technically open world meaning you could drive around outside of the predetermined race course.

I notice from the footage you're having trouble emulating PS1 games with Redbook audio. My personal favorite PS1 game is Klonoa, it's one of the only games I can call a masterpiece and I absolutely cannot wait for the upcoming remake collection 19:41 Because this actually was originally going to be a Strike game 20:23 I'd say a mixture of things, namely the extra input lag from HDTVs (that thankfully can be compensated for now on modern emulation) and the game itself is very random in what it considers good/bad when you're playing freestyle. Um Jammer Lammy holds up much better 1:19:17 You need to play the sequel IQ/Kurushi Final, it's basically the first game but with more content/unlockables and it gets rid of the small delay when you detonate bombs which makes the game flow much better You covered pretty much all my favorite and big nostalgic PS1 games short of Speed Freaks and Tomba and MediEvil, holy crap this was a really good list

Felony 11-79 was known as Runabout in Japan and was the first game in a fairly popular series. When the sequel came out in Europe in 2003 not only was it 3 years after the American release (and nearly 4 years after the Japanese release!) it was called Runabout 2. There was a game on the Dreamcast that actually came out before the Playstation sequel (Super Runabout: The Golden State).

Must add that in Cold Blood was the first 3D adventure by Revolution, the guys who made Broken Sword, Beneath a Steel Sky and other games (I see no adventure games are present in the list, so you must dislike the genre). Of course it is also their most forgotten game, even more than Lure of the Tempress.
