We asked Atkin take us step-by-step through creating the signature look when she sat down with InStyle’s Fashion and Beauty Editor at Large, Kahlana Barfield. Honestly these waves are really hard to create on long hair. I wish you guys did a video on this on long hair..I've been wanting to create these waves for a long time :(

Totally feel your pain! You can do them if you use a different technique with the straightener. First technique: Rather than 'bending' each strand, rotate the straightener more (even a full 360) and move down. This technique is usually for curls, but if I move down more swiftly, I get a loose curl that I finger comb out to a relaxed wave. It took me a few times to get the technique right. I found it helped if I had minimal product in my hair to start with. Make sure the parts you're touching with the flat iron are bone dry! Second technique: Braid your hair in a variety of small sections. I tend to do between 4 and 8, dependijg on how defined I want my waves. Massage mousse into each braid (I skip this sometimes) and then clamp down each braid with a straightener in 5 second intervals. Go over it like this a second time and leave until the braids are no longer hot. You'll have crazy kinky beach waves! Spray 'em with a salt mist or other texturizer, blast them with a blow dryer and tug the end of your hair down to relax them if they're too kinky, and voila!

Id do black hair and If I let a black lady out of the chair looking like that id be in trouble! that Iron Needed to be a lot hotter for her type of hair. The way that weave was put in and the cut was bad too. Did she really do her hair because it didn't look like she did too much to it.
