My daughter is almost 13. I have gone to some outrageous birthday parties since she was in preschool. Kim K isnt the only one throwing outlandish parties. They have kinda become the new normal. Out are the large celebrations for milestone bdays, and In, is throwing large parties no matter what age the kid is turning. Everyday moms are also throwing over the top bdays every year for their kid. I think in this day and age of social media and keeping up with everyone, it's not uncommon for large parties for any occasion.
