My exact train of thought: "Ha, ha...those poor suckers with that terrible C64 port of Double Dragon. Wait, I remember that bit from the note from the developers about the space in the character sprites. Oh, god...I WAS one of those poor suckers, and I'd just blocked it from my mind!"

I had Outrun on the Amstrad and remember clearly how my heart sank when I loaded it up. After the initial shock there was this embarrassing phase when I tried to convince myself that I could maybe enjoy this game. So, I put on my Walkman and listened the cassette and pretended I was playing the arcade game I loved so much. It was a pathetic sight. I don’t think I ever felt so low when playing a video game.

Wow, this video is basically my childhood. I finished Double Dragon on C64 up late one night sneakily playing when I shouldn't be. Right after I beat the final boss the game crashed and played a loud digitally distorted sound effect and the jump scare has stuck with me for life. Bruno's boxing on C64 had a cassette for each opponent! Chase HQ was soooo disappointing at the time. I started to learn arcade ports were garbage. You could probably do a good video on crappy games based on movies on early computers. I had a copy of Big Trouble in Little China on C64 and that was soul destorying.

I had Frank Bruno’s boxing. C64 controls were a mix of keyboard and joystick. Left and right on joystick made you dodge left and right. Up and down on joystick moved your gloves between head and body shots. On the keyboard 1 was left jab, 2 was right jab and space was power punch or haymaker whatever you want to call it.

Oh boy I so remember buying the C64 Double Dragon. The box was just gorgeous piece of art. Then I loaded it, waited and waited (the c-casette version) and then I was so disappointed. :) Generally there were a lot of arcade ports for the C64, which were super fast put together cash grabs. Luckily there were also many great ports, like The New Zeland Story, Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Commando, Ikari Warriors (not the US version!), Marble Madness, Turbo Outrun, Space Harrier and Gauntlet, just to name a few.

For the original Street Fighter, I have to say I kinda like the USA version on the C64. I got a retail boxed copy of it when it was new and I didn't even realize it had special moves in it until years later, after Street Fighter II hit the arcades. One day I went home and loaded it up to try some stuff and see if fireballs, hurricane kicks and dragon punches were in the game and was shocked to find out they were! They made the game super easy after that, but still cool. I also had the Amiga version which was, of course, a steaming pile of crap. Since it was mentioned below, I do have a soft spot for C64 Outrun, it was the first version of that game I every played. Great music despite missing Passing Breeze.

I'm fairly certain the lack of Simpsons arcade ports on the consoles was indeed a licensing issue. Acclaim held the rights to publish games on consoles (in the US, at least; not sure about across the pond), but computer game rights were a separate license and not always picked up by the same company as the console rights.

Acclaim held all the rights to home console ports of the Simpsons that's why Konami could only do Arcade and home computer ports.

@genstarmkg5321

Not only that, but they also held the rights to European home computer games. That's why, if you have noticed, both the MS DOS and C64 version were only released in North America and there aren't ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC versions. In fact, the C64 version doesn't work in PAL machines.
@genstarmkg5321

Also, an Amiga version was planned but since that machine was pretty much dead in the US and they had already fucked it up with the Amiga Castlevania, they cancelled that version alongside the Amiga version of Metal Gear.

Cool vid as always. I was laughing as while you are 100% right I remember thinking Double Dragon on the ST was one of the best things ever as a kid......until I played it in the arcade! A good shout for the topic of the vid would also be Street Fighter 2 also on the ST. Tbf, my hopes weren't high - The ST was basically dead at the time, my expectations were tempered by that, and I was after getting a Mega Drive anyway (SF might have been the last game I got for my ST actually)......but good god, even accounting for that it was rather shit. I only got it to work a couple of times (My ST was very old and had taken some welly) but even when it did work it was a) choppy as hell and b) on a joystick......even had t been silky smooth SF 2 is not a game to play on a Joystick!

Odd isn't it? reactions to games. I bought the Amiga version of Outrun on budget, having never played the arcade game (hadn't seen it either tbh). I had only recently gotten my Amiga, coming across from a 48K Spectrum, I though the game was perfectly fine. I loved the big bombastic intro, although I was very underwhelmed by the game music itself, and thought the game was good. Of course after that I saw the Lotus trilogy and Jaguar XJ220 and realised how lacking Outrun was and more importantly, they showed how good Outrun could have been on a stock A500.

One that I would put in the Excellent category is Motos, which strangely got ports to the 3 main 8-bits. Sure it's a Namco game, but I'd definitely call it one of the more obscure Namco games of the era and on the surface it isn't something that looks like it would be easy to throw together any kind of sales pitch for. The CPC version however is an excellent adaptation and really shines on the platform.

I was UTTERLY devestated when I loaded SF1 up on my Atari ST at the time, after seeing the screenshots of the ST version in the mags and back of the ZX Spectrum box, I sold my spectrum and saved up for my ST (later sold for an Amiga which I still have) to have what I thought was almost arcade perfect looking version of a game I utterly loved in the arcades,...we had the 6-button version in our arcades,...I was shocked to see what was playing in front of my eyes,...I was looking round to see if someone was having a huge joke on me, but nope they wern't, I very quickly realised once again U.S. Gold screwed us kids out of our money by coughing up an utterly crud conversion via Tiertex. Chase HQ on the C64 is _interesting_ - it was converted by Teque, who also did the Amiga/ST ports (and obviously converted some of the sprites over in the process). But considering they also did a decent job with Continential Circus, I can't help but wonder what kind of restricted timeline they were on to get it out the door, which is why they ported those Spectrum routines and made a mess of it. Double Dragon is honestly a sad, sad case - it only came out in the last few years it was a 6 week rush job by some darn talented coders (Ash & Dave, who wisely asked to not be credited). It's trash, but you gotta feel for 'em when the deck is stacked against them so much. On the upside, the title tune is decent, but when you've got access to Maniacs of Noise, that shouldn't be a surprise...

I’m surprised that anyone attempted to bring STUN Runner to the home computers. It just wasn’t possible to work out. The Atari Lynx, of course, has its excellent translation by D. Scott Williamson, who also wrote the Lynx versions of Roadblasters and Toki. Even then, the Lynx faked the visuals with 2D sprites instead of polygons. That said, it’s highly impressive for its time and leagues ahead of any system from 1991.

I knew about C64 Simpson’s but not Amiga Ninja Gaiden. Regarding your speculation on why the C64 port of Chase HQ was so bad, I wouldn’t have thought it was due to diminishing interest in the C64 from Ocean at the time, since it was no less supported than other platform (with notable games such as Batman the Movie and Midnight Resistance). I think it’s more a case of there being more focus on the Z80 ports (especially as they were better at 3D than the C64) and the poor old 64 was an afterthought and basically got sloppy seconds (or thirds in this case). Either way, it was an insulting port.

Mentioning GameTek will always make me remember my favorite game growing up: Nomad (published in 1993 by them for DOS). Maybe someday you'll mention them in a video. Either a retrospective on GameTek, or maybe a video about de-licensed games (or whatever you call a game that was originally conceived as a licensed game, but the license was dropped before release--Nomad was originally going to be a game branded around Disney's Space Mountain ride). I'm sure there are a few interesting de-licensed games to mention.

Chase HQ on the C64 is simply a recompiled copy of the Tiger LCD version.

I've rarely seen an Amstrad CPC game going downhill so fast after the loading screen as Out Run did. Luckily I didn't buy it, a friend from my brother did. It made Enduro Racer look like a masterpiece. At least Enduro Racer had an engine noise and a road that looked like it was moving forward.

Literally laughed out loud at Kung Fu Master on the spectrum. Imagine being a kid saving up ten quid to buy this then loading up that though.

Best thing is somebody recently did a better home conversion for the speccy, it was very good, it wasn't called kung fu master but is exactly the same game

@@memermetalthemiddleagedaut99 Agreed. The remake is called Mister Kung Fu and is a superb port.

Yep.... I was an unfortunate kid who spent his birthday money on kung fu master... God awful... it wasn't long after buying it I went into the dark side and went into piracy on TDK 90 tapes. Well... until the turbo loaders came out and my tape to tape method was beaten 😊

SAGAT is in the MDOS version, you can see it on my channel (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5TLaJiheauJidE), Sagat wasn't included in the C64 U.S.A version,...god knows why.

Never really liked that game, always found it very repetitive. It's got some weird tie-ins, Jackie Chan movie Wheels on Meals that's called Spartan X in Japan, there was a Spartan X comic book (that has nothing to do with the game or movie).
