The fact that some people don't know who the iconic Bette Davis is truly is sad. Then again, the first producer who saw her initially said he saw no one who looked like a star and she was that and so much more. Those haunting eyes, that dramatic acting, that unmistakable voice... There will ever only be one Bette Davis.

Anyone listening in 2024? This is another one of those early (for me) tunes that I remember very well. I didn't understand the song at the time, but it was Kim's vocals that were captivating - and at that age, I didn't have the words to describe it, I only know that it grabbed me and held me for the entire song. Still does. The 80s were truly a magic decade as far as music is concerned.

If you just close your eyes and listen to this song, it will take you back to early 80s. At a pizza parlor, with an old fashion music jukebox, two standing arcade games of Defender and Pac-Man side by side, pitchers of root beer and Coke next to your freshly ordered pizza. The polyurethane finished wooden table and bench with some wear and tear and some minor random graffiti on them. Perhaps a basketball game with Bird and Magic showing on the flickering TV. A worn poster of Empire Strikes Back on one wall and a new Rocky III poster on the opposite wall. You slowly eat your pizza because you just want to soak in the moment and not go back home to study for tomorrow's history test. All the while, your neck is stretch from watching the main door, wondering if your crush is going to walk in there anytime tonight.

It's because the synthesizer was so prevalent in the 80's. Furthermore, use of the synthesizer implies that the atmosphere is quiet, and who doesn't like peace and quiet? In a room full of noise one might still be able to hear a guitar being plucked in the corner but a synthesizer would be lost in the din. So when our mind hears a synthesizer it is happy because that means the atmosphere must be quiet enough for our ears to hear it.

80s music has all those bouncy tunes, even with a somewhat dark tone in the lyrics, while in the 90s it was all angst. Now that I said that, Jackie DeShannon recorded this in 1974 as more of an R&B take.

I think part of the magic is that music was defined by talent more than appearence. Now you just need to have a "look" and auto-tune will handle the rest. When you open up the field to even the "ugly" people, you are exposing yourself to a wider range of talent and potentially great music. When your looks are what matters most, the field narrows drastically.

Hanging onto the sofa dancing. Grabbing mom to dance. And of course as soon as he started talking he was singing it. Today it’s part of his play list along with some of the other best of the time. ❤

This song defined my childhood. I distinctly remember waking up to this song after having eye surgery, this song playing on the radio. I had no idea whether I would be able to see at all, but this song playing in the background, comforted me, its light, memorable guitar line echoing through the post-operation room. As much as I tried to open my eyes, they remained shut, as if stitched shut. At only 8 years old, and unsure of whether I would see again, I clutched onto my mother's hand, trembling in fear. My mom reassured me that the operation was a success, and that I would see with time. As this song played on, I felt her move her hands to the throbbing beat of this song, and I once more willed open my eyes, a shadowy figure of my mom emerging from my small slit of vision. As this song ended, I felt a tear land on her hand -- and then Credence Clearwater Revival began to play.

I am an old Boomer now...By the end of the 1970s, I had pretty much given up on popular music, having been so immersed in the fabulous 1960s, and early 1970s music explosion...But when MTV showed up, I began to appreciate such masterful artists as this fine, talented woman!...A voice almost like Rod Stewart, looks like a supermodel, and incorporating very infectious Synthethiser riffing!...She deserved to be a major force in the ensuing decades. Her career behind the music scenes is very interesting. I admire this woman very much!

Apparantly, Bette Davis heard the song, and liked it. That was a few years before she died (1989). And indeed, there was all of a sudden a new generation who wanted to know who the heck was the great but almost forgotten Davis. Loved her in Petrified Forest, in All about Eve and in the lesser known anti McCarthyism-movie Storm Center (1956), probably the first time Hollywood dared to reply to the former Senator and his croonies.

Sorry +Nichetronix, but "proven completely right" is a gross and misleading characterization of actual history. The fact is that the majority of people Senator McCarthy accused as having communist ties had no connection to any communist political or governmental organization, or any real indication as being communist sympathizers other than the suspicions of McCarthy and his ilk. Of course he was correct about some he dragged through the mud, but only for the same reason a broken clock tells the correct time twice a day! :p That alone is bad enough, but his self-appointed "crusade" also showed contempt to some of the most fundamental concepts of the country he supposedly treasured, like "freedom of expression" and "innocent until proven guilty". He was often more subversive to such ideals than anyone he tried to expose...

Areanyusernamesleft In a nutshell, he simply was a political opportunist. If he would have lived under Stalin, he would have caused the downfall of Beria, and taken his place.

Yes, Kim tells that they met and Miss Davis thanked her because "now my grandchildren know I was great". Amazing story! Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.

Yea, the best part in this is that Kim Carnes' version is a cover of Jackie DeShannon's original song from 1974 ;-)
