That's because the film was made using miniatures mostly and not alot of CGI, there's a reason LOTR looks more realistic than The Hobbit.
@istvanfodor97493 жыл бұрын
It's all about appropriate use. CGI is best used for backdrops of grandeur and sense of scale. The second it's implemented on every focused shot on the cast it dilutes human chemistry which is obviously a vital aspect of movies. I'm no expert but thats just my take.

I’m a huge CGI nerd, and can notice the little inconsistencies and wanky movement, that happen VERY little in the series mind you (as can anyone else notice these). Do not get me wrong, these movies could go on for as many years as that, but imagine if they remastered this trilogy! Fix some small details of CGI, and make some wonky elements look a bit better! Not that there’s anything wrong with the movies, nor do they need these changes. I just think it would be pretty badass.

Something I love about this is the depiction of the Orc general, Gothmog. I love how there's a lot of show-don't-tell storytelling that goes on with him, first and foremost being his appearance. Through the whole rest of the movie, we see that Might Makes Right amongst Orcs and Uruks. They are judged and ranked almost wholly on their capacity for violence, and if you're not as strong as the next guy in line, you're likely to be bullied at best, or eaten alive at worst. However, Gothmog has a crippled hand and only partial sight out of his left eye; but he is second in command of the entire army. Almost all of his dialogue is delivered in a level, quiet tone, because he doesn't need to shout to impose his orders. At 2:02 he quells any thought of cowardice with a few words. He understands the use of psychological warfare, captapulting the heads of the captured Gondorians into the city, showing he's much more intelligent than we might expect of a rank and file Orc. He shows his tenacity by not dodging the rubble until the last second. All this builds an image of a leader unlike any other in Mordor's legions, and a suitably dangerous adversary in the siege of Minas Tirith.
@Mrlonefighter2 жыл бұрын
You can also see his skills in the way he navigates the battle on Osgiliath earlier in the movie, when he orders the orcs to attack during cover of night and fog, dimming the lights and being quiet while rowing etc. As Faramir and the other rangers and the other Gondor guards stationed there didn't expect an attack from the river. A great character in my opinion.

This movie is pretty old and it still looks great. Best trilogy ever!
@greypilgrim2286 жыл бұрын
That's because it uses real people in costume for the Orcs and Urak hai. The Hobbit is only a few years old and already looks dated, it looked dated the moment it came out. That's because, a) camera resolution and rendering techniques have improved to the extent you can clearly see the falseness of the sets, and it breaks the illusion and magic, and b) having all the orcs rendered in CGI makes them seem fake and it's too much uncanny valley. The way they inserted the pointless love triangle with Taril was stupid. I get that it was necessary to split the movie to tell the whole story in all it's cinematic glory, but without all the pointless padding it could have been 2 middle/long movies at most. In 10 years time the Hobbit movies are going to be a bad joke with cringe worthy out of date effects, though to give credit to Peter Jackson he tried his best to save them when he took over. The LOTR trilogy however will remain a spectacular historical classic which broke the mould on fantasy films, CGI, breath-taking filming locations, a wonderful and beautiful musical score, and an all star cast that will remain legends for decades to come!

I love how the orcs are fielding catapults while the men are using trebuchets. Catapults are easier to make and operate but less accurate, though great for bringing down walls, while trebuchets are faster, more accurate, and a lot much powerful though it’s difficult to both build and use. Really reflects the difference between the men and orcs of Middle Earth: quality vs. quantity. Edit: just realized I’m using the wrong terminology. Catapult is a catch-all term for siege engines used to throw heavy loads, trebuchet is a kind of catapult. The proper term for the things the orcs were using is “onager”, named after the wild donkey for its “kick”.
@AllGamingStarred3 жыл бұрын
*more powerful not much
@1003JustinLaw3 жыл бұрын
@@AllGamingStarred It really just comes down to the type of "ammunition" used. Catapults are quite limited in the types of things they could launch, and their limited angle makes it difficult for them to strike at key and tactical targets beyond the walls. Furthermore, catapults tends to break more often than (properly made) trebuchets due to the torque used to generate potential and the block that the arm slams into to launch the projectile, compared to the more natural swinging motion of the trebuchet.
@alqamenesh74333 жыл бұрын
Trebuchets are not really faster nor more accurate, but they can surely launch heavier weights

2:21 "We need more rubble!" I like that small detail since you see earlier that the orc catapults were destroying the city leaving rubble and pieces of buildings. And since Gondor didn't have much projectiles such as huge rocks like the orcs were using, they had to use rubble from their destroyed city.
@elliottknifton89023 жыл бұрын
If they had projectiles available they could have seriously hindered the orc army's progress. They should have launched several small stones rather than single large ones and exploit their superior range by destroying the orc catapults first then the siege towers.

Just realized that the city would never have been breached if it weren’t for the Nazgul. The trebuchets were taking out the siege towers and could have also taken out Grond before it reached the gates. Without Grond, the army of Minas Morgul would be stuck in the fields. In an extended scene, the orc corpses are piling up at the foot of the gate because it’s too strong for them to breach it with standard battering rams. The Nazgul thwarted Gondor’s chances by destroying all of their trebuchets and causing all of the soldiers, namely the archers, to run for cover. Sauron really was prepared for almost every scenario. He even stationed battle-ready Haradrim in reserve in case Rohan showed up. Hell, Sauron even had an army of at least 10,000 stay behind in Mordor just in case 200,000 orcs, a cavalry of Oliphants AND a legion of corsairs weren't able to get the job done in Gondor... And if it weren't for the Army of the Dead arriving Sauron would have undoubtedly won Middle Earth that day.

@Theo-ou6sq6 жыл бұрын
The numbers are foggy but there was WAY more than 10000 in mordor. Only a third or a fifth of saurons total force (cant remember) marched on minas tirith. Heidi Levin in the book Imrahil and a large cavalry force charge out and minas tirith is never breached. Army of the dead was only used for the corsairs of umbar which was still a huge force in the black ships sailing down the Anduin. Aragon went to the various fiefdoms and gathered a force to go back to minas tirith with. Which makes it even more insane that they didnt use the army of the dead for the battle of minas tirith. I havent read the book in a while so im probably missing bits but the army of the dead was not used for the battle of pelenor fields and mordor never got into the city as the film suggests.

Gimli: "Let him stay there, let him rot! Why should we care?" Gandalf: "Because 10,000 orcs stand between Frodo and Mt Doom...i've sent him to his death." In the movie there was 10,000 but in the books a few hundred thousand im sure. Considering there are less than a million people who live in Middle Earth 10,000 is still a very large host relatively speaking. All oh Rohan's forces combined couldn't even amount to 10,000...

When Gandalf says "Send these foul beasts into the abyss" at 1:50 and the music swells but not to the full heroic climax that we will hear later, during the true victory, it is such well rounded story telling! Gandalf is there giving them hope and courage, telling them to start swinging back. The visuals we see match the music - heroic, the Men of the West are not going down without a fight, although the back and forth still favors the darkness at this point. Man, this is just so good!

You heard that Rohan, you're strongest ally had been decimated and possibly wiped out on Helms Deep, and then Osgiliath, who had hold the borders for years had finally been taken and it's defenders massacred. Then severed heads of your comrades got flinged on top of you. While you have no ideas what's outside, you only hear drums and warcries of a thousands hellspawn. On top of that, Nazguls who I don't think need any explanation on how terrifying they are are flying on top of your city throwing men and equipment all around. And then your City's Steward fall in front of you, still burning lmao.

Im not mixed up, you're the one making assumptions. Im french so these are the words we use here. And how is the comparison fair in any way ?
