I agree with you so much about just getting the resources now! I tried so hard to create and do too many things on my own when I was first starting out with homeschooling. Sometimes it's just better to spend the money and save your sanity.

Yay for homeschooling twin boys! 😄🍎 We just finished our Kindergarten year. We used Abeka for phonics/reading, Math with Confidence, and A Reason for Handwriting. I used every shred of patience I did and didn't have, and by the grace of God we made it through! We are all very ready for a break! Planning to keep things mostly the same for next year, because they are making good progress, but I'd like to add a few extras in, like possibly All About Spelling. They are not at all into writing out lists of spelling words (or writing anything for that matter!). I'm trying to strike the balance between a good education and not banging my head against the wall too much! 😀

We used Abeka K5 and have almost finished Abeka 1 for my youngest. She is so positive about reading and is confident to pick up any book and start reading with joy! We credit it all to the wonderful foundation given in Abeka.

I feel like I am gradually learning to spend realistically on the tools that make homeschool easy to accomplish...vs. always trying to save money and get less that what I really want or need. lol! Loved hearing this video because I also had a Kindergartener this year--how quickly they grow up!

🍎 I am glad you thought the busywork was unnecessary. And we were so happy to take Abeka grade 1 as a K-1 program because it has most of the meat without the gristle :)

I’m a first time homeschooling mom. I have been watching a lot of homeschooling videos. Some creators have said that Abeka can take a lot of time to prep for each week. Did you find it to be that way?
@sciencemama4 ай бұрын
Not necessarily, I just have a magazine holder that I keep all the current teaching materials in (flashcards, charts, etc)

I have been using LOE, so which one do you like better?? Since you have used both.....How did you use LOE?
@sciencemama6 ай бұрын
I like Abeka for K-2'ish ... really until they are reading. Then I switch to LOE for essentials!

Curious in the difference between Abeka phonics compared to all about reading.
@sciencemama7 ай бұрын
They are pretty different ... AAR is more phonics driven and tends to go slower. Abeka does use phonics but also special sounds and quick tricks like the one and two vowel rule that gets kids reading faster! I do have a comparison video on my channel from a few years ago that you can check out!

Question 🙋♀️ my 5 year old is about to finish AAR level 2. Which level of phonics would you recommend with abeka? I’m debating if we should move on into level 3 in AAR or explode the code or abeka. He’s still young but advanced in this area. I feel like AAR is going a bit too slow.
@hannahsharon17 ай бұрын
I used Abeka Kindergarten this year too, and the problem I see is that AAR and Abeka use pretty different approaches to phonics and reading. I am not in love with Abeka, but because I don't have a major issue at this point, I am not switching because I want to follow the learning train that Abeka has us on. In your situation, I would move through AAR as quickly as your child is getting it, and finish the program if they are learning and making progress. I think you would find holes in your child's knowledge if you did Abeka grade one (which can be patched, for sure!), but they would know a great deal of the material in K.
@brookeally13467 ай бұрын
@@hannahsharon1thank you! This is very helpful. We tried to do level 2 very slowly in AAR 2 but still finish lessons in almost 10 mins every single time. Maybe we will fly through level 3 too. I think maybe moving to level 3 would be fine for him. I learned with abeka myself for years and I know language arts is pretty solid.
@sciencemama7 ай бұрын
I agree with what @hannahsharon1 said ... they are both phonics based but Abeka also uses special sounds and some other rules to help get kids reading faster. I do have a comparison video on my channel from a few years ago that might help you!
@brookeally13467 ай бұрын
@@sciencemamathanks! I’ll look for the video. I’m just trying to get him moving forward. I worry switching might repeat things he might already know.

Just thought I'd chime in if helpful! My son just finished AAR2 and he's been using Abeka 1 along side it. He's about halfway through it and will continue through the summer. A full switch to Abeka from AAR2 may be confusing as they teach things at different points. There are many blends in Abeka 1 that we have not yet covered in AAR2. However, if your goal is to let your kiddo progress faster, just getting the Abeka handbook for reading and the readers will introduce your kiddo to the blends and get them going! My son took off with it and enjoys the readers and being able to read so much more. In is independent reading he is reading above his AAR level now, however we are still using our AAR for steady consistent practice. He just began level 3 today. Once he's finished with his Abeka 1 workbook we won't be continuing with the level 2 workbook, but we will continue with the reading handbook and readers.
