Yes, it's been 14 years of Kindle, and what's funny is that when Brandon told me he was gonna do that review so many years ago, I just didn't understand why? A product that could only read books didn't make any sense to me, and especially when I was already reading ebooks for years on my Pocket PC.
It wasn't until I tried one many years later that I picked up on the genius behind these little gadgets. Surely I know many of you still love that smell of paper, and the feel of a regular book, but that would be a huge oversimplification of what a Kindle can do, and their latest model is out to prove just that.
This is the new Kindle Paperwhite, a pretty overdue update to the 2018 model, and what I'd call the most ambitious change Amazon has brought to these devices, even if you won't be able to tell as easily. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and this is our full review, sponsored by MediaTek

I am 82. About 10 years ago or more, I bundled up all my hardback and paperback books and hauled them off to the library. Then I got a Nook. And a year later I got my first Kindle. Now I have the latest version of the Nook and the Kindle Paperwhite. I have both just in case one fails. For all those geezers between 30 and 40 that just have to be able to touch the printed page, go for it. Me, I am sticking with my e-Readers.

I'm getting ready to make that same trip to the library! I've got an old Paperwhite and an even older (no light) Kindle. Amazon offered $5 for a trade-in credit! I keep it in my car in case I'm stuck somewhere. If I loose it, who cares? Great post BTW.

No reason to choose a kindle though. And your books will not be to your disposal if you ever change brand. So you won't. So it's a scam. Just like their library system. Which does not cooperate with the real public e-libraries (at least in Germany) but is filled with 90% of self published junk.

I totally agree with using a Kindle over an actual book or even my iPad Mini for the same reasons you mentioned. I've done more reading on my Kindle than using a book or even my iPad mini. So convenient and light and unlike using my iPad Mini, I can't close the app and switch over to streaming a movie or social media on a whim. It makes you stay focused on reading. Big plus, I never have to worry about lighting conditions or people judging me by the books I read while at a coffee shop 😂

I've got the ordinary 2021 Paperwhite. I did wonder about the extra storage on the Signature but to give you an idea, I have 1206 books and docs plus 2 Audible loaded onto it so far and still have 3.11GB of space remaining. Many of my books are larger books - foreign language dictionaries, and Complete Works. Naturally I can remove books as I read them, I will still be able to see them listed when I'm connected to Wifi so that I can redownload them when I want to read them again.
@DanielBerke

Interesting, thanks for that data point. I'm looking at the Signature edition for the auto-adjusting light, but the wireless charging is a bit pointless for something with a battery life measured in weeks and this confirms that I'm rather unlikely to fill up 8 GB, so the price difference is a bit much. We'll see.

I upgraded from my perfectly fine and beloved Paperwhite 3 to this new Paperwhite 5. Yes, the larger screen is awesome, and menus are a tiny little faster. But for me the killer feature is Dark Mode. Love it! It could have been implemented in older versions but they chose not to which is a shame... But I did not mind buying a new device as I plan to keep it for at least 5 to 10 years of frequent use.

I found a kindle from 2011 (and probably haven't been used since then) still works and the battery life was surprisingly very good. I've been using it and the e-ink makes it feel like I'm looking at paper rather than a screen and hurts my eyes a lot less. The only reason I'm considering getting a new kindle is to read in the dark. Also I'm more likely to bring a kindle as a carry-on on a road trip rather than an iPad due to the size and the longevity of its battery-life.

I like my Oasis because of one feature. I like the page turn buttons and the ability to disable the touch screen. I tend to turn pages by accident just holding a device. I have the same issue with my phone. The Oasis is my second Kindle. The first one was the Kindle Keyboard.

Nice to see the iPaq. Back then, I worked for Compaq. I used it for ebooks and Audible, just like you. So much easier to put in your bag than a load of books. I have used Sony, Nook, Kindle since day one. I currently use a first model (2017?) Oasis. I have had to reformat it twice during 2021, so I know it is getting long in the tooth. I keep waiting to see if a new Oasis will launch, but you ALMOST convince me to try the new Paperwhite. During 2020, with a broken wrist, the Oasis saved me, as I switched to my off hand and the auto page-mode kept me going. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

I began with a Kindle 3 which needed an external light and then replaced that with the very first Paperwhite which I bought in 2013 shortly before the PW2 came out, I still have it and it's as good now as when I first bought it although the leatherette cover is just about worn out, I have very recently bought the latest 11th generation Kindle, the Paperwhite 5 with 8Gb . I thought the extra cost of the 32Gb rather exorbitant and I see no need for wireless charging, especially now there is USB-C connection'., I have the Kindle app on my phone which is synced with the Kindle so no matter where I am and even when I don't have the kindle with me, I can continue reading if I get stuck somewhere. However the phone doesn't last very long unlike the Kindle which can run for weeks without charging.

Something I think most people forget to mention is availability of digital copy of the book. Much less a problem now than when Kindle was first a thing years ago but certainly something you need to research. It depends on what kind of books you read. Most modern published books will be available in digital and identical to physical. If you read more non fiction and books that tend to be older but still not in public domain then you may have a hard time. Yet others (like a lot of anthologies I've seen) are available in digital copy but their digital version of very poor, often missing content. Again, not a big deal for most people, given the kind of books that seem like popular reads but something you'd want to look into it your taste differs or you read a very specific type of literature.

Although I have Kindle on my IPAD, the best thing about it is it’s light weight. I have arthritis in my wrists, so although I still enjoy real books, as you’ve said most are heavy and they bother my wrist as well as small lettering. I’m a senior so this helps a lot. My first Kindle was a Mothers Day Gift, and it was the first one out. I thought I’d never use it, but soon learned it was one of the things I can’t do without as I’ve always had my head in a book. I’ve got hundreds of books available at all times including many “Complete works of ...” and many compilations by genre. I was initially hesitant to buy a Kindle, thinking how often I would actually read a read. Whether in digital or physical form books seldom get read more than a few times (with a few exceptions). I was one of those loved holding a book and turning pages and placing it on a bookshelf. When I did buy my Kindle I thought that the novelty of the device would wear off before too long and I would return to physical books. However this was not the case. The Kindle altered my reading habits and found myself reading every single day. As I grow older reading text on a page is difficult but with the ability to expand the text on the Kindle reading is much more pleasurable. At this time I do at least 95% of my reading on my Kindle. A couple years later I bought the Fire HD 10 tablet so that I could read comic books and other things that the Kindle cannot. I have the 7th generation model and still very satisfied with it. Being small and light and having a sizeable library at your disposal beats lugging around a physical book. I felt like a bit of a traitor at first but a book is a book no matter what format is comes in. As a lifelong reader this is the best thing I have bought in a long time. Would I upgrade to another model? Probably....but only when it's absolutely necessary.

Wife and I switched to the Kindle many years ago primarily because we travel a lot and both like to read. Spend 4 months in rural Mexico and good luck with a paper format reading list. I found myself reading crappy romance novels because that's all I could find in some hotel recycling bin. Now.... I have any book I want within seconds..... And often free for 21 days from my local library back home. I also use the software called Calibre on a laptop to download and sync books free to our Kindles. Oh, I for one would never use an iPad or kindle fire for reading since it sends to many distractions

I download library books often, occasionally buy a book if there's a terrific price on it. No backlight, no need, and there are page turn buttons. No need to change that either. I'm probably not the upgrading consumer they'd really prefer! But I love my lightweight Kindle, loaded with big books I couldn't lug about with me.

My vision tends to blur when I get tired, so being able to up the font extends my reading time. I'm asthmatic, the 'smell' of books is problem when books hold on to things like perfume, cigarette smoke, etc, especially when buying books 2nd hand or taking them out of the library. NOTHING is more frustrating then finding the next book in a series you're reading at the library, opening it up and going into an asthma attack! Because you can't read the book. I rarely use the back lit option, though it's nice to have for those rare times I *do* need it. And being able to switch between books (because other wise I finish my book club book way too fast and lose the rest of the group), and being able to pick up a new book when I finish one without dragging two or three books along on a trip is great as well. I got my first Kindle in 2009, and I haven't been without one since, I use it every day for many hours a day.

I really like reading manga on it. I don’t have room on my shelf for manga. So being able to store them all on my kindle is nice. I notice it does drain the battery more than a regular book would, but not by much. it can freeze when you open it right after it downloads.

While I understand the great benefits of a dedicated e-reader, my goal is to have a few devices on hand whenever I travel or just head out, and honestly, I prefer my tablet since I can do more with it than with an e-reader. But I still sometimes think about getting one. Just not sure if I should. But great insight though! Thanks so much for this video.

I personally love my Kindle! It's one of my favorite possessions! It fits in my bag and is waterproof and glare proof. Excellent battery life. My eyes aren't very strong, so being able to change the font size is wonderful for me. Also, being lightweight, they are much easier to read in bed than a 1300 page book (The Count of Monte Cristo ftw!) with its booklight. I can carry 1000s of books with me on a lightweight, distraction free device.

My only gripe with a Kindle after 10 years and four Kindles is that it doesn't handle long book names well. I read allot of series rather than stand alone books. The problem comes in that most authors put the book number at the very end of the title (if at all but that is a separate issue). However in all options for viewing your library it does not wrap text so it cuts off part of the titles leaving me to guess which book is next unless I am near my computer so I can check the book order. I am sure this is just a me problem and I'm not big enough to ask Amazon to make a change in their software.

I’m preferring the paperwhite to the oasis. I didn’t get the signature edition because I didn’t need the storage or auto backlight or wireless charging. USB-C and the warm light is awesome. I like the plastic back compared to the oasis. Much easier to hold.

I've been a Kindle user since 2011 (my first tech video was the unboxing of the regular Kindle back then). I used the last regular Kindle with buttons, the first Kindle Touch (my first 'hit' on KZbin was my review of that one) and the segond-gen Paperwhite I've been using since 2014 (and I have not considered upgrading... yet). For me, the Kindle is one of those fundamental devices for my everyday. A distraction-free device for JUST READING...and it's perfect for that. Besides the device itself, tools like Goodreads to get recomendations from your peers and favorite authors and Readwise to track and share your highlights are a great addition to the whole Kindle experience.

I love my Kindle Paperwhite 2021, I read dominantly ebooks on my iPad for about 6 years and the Kindle was the best upgrade ever! I still love hard copies but have fewer of them than I would have without ebooks. While I go through reading ups and downs my Kindle is always in my bag for those handful of unexpected pockets of reading time. In my experience the battery lasts 2 solid weeks of constant reading (4-8hrs a day), with periodic reading I have yet to drain it. I like the light warmth feature but never go brighter than 10 (even that high is rare) so I think the range is unnecessarily large.

@ciannacoleman5125

@@Dr.Akakia Depends on if you regularly read pdfs with color, and whether you would be comfortable reading on a screen roughly half the size of your current one. If you know anyone with either a kindle or a mini iPad try borrowing that and reading on it. The mini iPad is about the same screen size and I think there is a way of turning the screen solely b&w if you wanted to test that out

I've read by Kindles since the Keyboard version was the latest. Out of curiosity, I upgraded to a Paperwhite near when they came out, found I wasn't using my keyboard version at all anymore, probably because of the backlight. Several months ago out of curiosity, I upgraded to a 32gb Signature Edition. I still use the first paperwhite version but not more than once a day. I'm noticing how little tv I watch anymore. I have NEVER missed holding a real book anymore. Apparently I'm stuck on Kindles.

I will own the Paperwhite Signature edition here in a few days but I love my oasis but my chief complaint is how heavy it is. It’s not the lightest thing in the world and the design does make it for premium but it feels less than premium. I still used it for over a Year but my wrist hurts when I use it in the bath. I hope the PW is lighter which will help with holding and that backside with the Rubberized coating OHHH LORDY. Gunna feel good to grip it without fearing for it in the bath
