Punishment is the suffering in person or property inflicted by society on the offender who has been adjudged guilty of crime under the law.
The main object of awarding punishments for offense is to create such an atmosphere which restrains people doing such offences.
Section 53 of P.P.C defines several types of punishments for different offences.

Arsh
Daman
Tazir
Death
Imprisonment for life
Imprisonment which namely
(i) Rigorous
(ii)Simple
