videos clips selected from my previous videos.
If you would like to know which video a certain clip came from please leave a comment of which loco and i will reply with the video title.

God bless the late Dai Woodham who owned the scrapyard. He didn't have to help preservationists but he did. in an interview he said it wasn't something he intended doing but the locomotives were left in the yard for longer. goods wagons were easier for his workers to scrap.

Went to Barry in 1977 and wandered around the lines and lines of rusty locos. It was a lifetime experience. I would never have imagined most of those wrecks would be reborn and still running again. 220 and more still being renovated. Amazing.

I'm in the United States. I've loved steam locomotives since I was a young kid in the late 1950's. I'm happy to see many of them brought out of where they sat in parks for public view and brought back to life. What I love about steam locomotives is the complexity of what makes them work.

I lot of dedication & love goes into restoring these old girls. A great great uncle of mine was a cabinet maker in the late 1800's - early 1900's. His job was building those beautiful old timber passenger carriages, many of which are still used or displayed today.

What I think is remarkable , is when these groups of people went to the Barry scrap yard to buy these engines . They had not enough money , to do so . So they asked the owner to keep for them until they did . Sometimes it took years to do so , This was all by verbal agreement . Nothing was ever written down .

It is strange how few steam locomotives were put on static display. In the US, it seems that many small towns have an old steam locomotive on display, whereas there are very few in the UK, except in museums. I suspect it's because they were largely regarded as out-of-date old rubbish when they were taken out of service and "Welcome to Anytown, site of this old piece of junk!" wasn't the image places were trying to project. Today, they'd be much better received, but you'd need to time-machine them here from the 1960s.

Great illustrative video showing that these engines were beyond mere preservation, but have been re-built and with many new parts needed and made from scratch. That all this work on so many engines has been achieved by volunteers should be recognised by a generous gesture from government (out representatives) by say, having Network rail made responsible for the maintenance of the saved lines these splendid locomotives run along.

One of the best things about living in Cardiff as a young teen in the 70`s was being able to get the train from Cardiff central to Barry Island with a couple of mates, spend 1/2 a day in the train yard climbing over the units, playing engine drivers ( no health and safety concerns then)then onto the island fairground for some rides, chips soaked in vinegar and doughnuts. Less than a £1 return fare if I remember correctly . I wouldn’t`t mind betting I`ve climbed over some of these beauties that have been restored to their former glory which is great to see ,and brings back some great memories, so many thanks for posting.

A decent fraction of all preserved mainline steam locos in the UK came from Woodham's. It's quite remarkable good fortune that they bought all those locos to scrap but then realised it was more profitable to work on other contracts and save the steam locos for a rainy day.

Unfortunately the skills and the infrastructure to rebuild our engineering base doesn't exist in sufficient quantities. Engineering has been a dirty word in education for nearly forty years now. When I was leaving school in 1979 when I said the the careers master that I wanted to go into the motor trade her reaction was and I quote 'surely you want to be something better than a dirty smelly mechanic, if that's your ambition I can't do anything for you'. After serving my City And Guilds apprenticeship I went on to be a senior manager in the motor industry before taking early retirement at 55.

A good number, but not "virtually all". Woodham's bought 297 steam locomotives from British Rail and 84 of those were scrapped. Seven were completely dismantled to provide parts for other locomotives being preserved. Twenty are still in basically scrap-yard condition and another 32 are still in the process of being restored. That means that just over half (154 out of 297) are currently in restored condition, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're working steam locomotives: some have only been cosmetically restored for static display and others were in runnable condition but now need expensive repairs such as boiler overhauls. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_locomotives_saved_from_Woodham_Brothers_scrapyard
