I am only learning about where my family came from now. It was only recently that I found out that King Arthur lived in the Scottish borders. So much rich and proud history for the border people.

I loved your video. I too, am an Arthurian fan? enthusiast? May I recommend 'Norma Lorre Goodrich's' book "Arthur". She was a preeminent linguist and translated many ancient manuscripts. She places Arthur firmly in Scotland and provides an awful lot of information to back up her theories of a Scots Arthur. In 2000, while on vacation in your beautiful country, I followed Goodrich's suggestions and visited all the places she avows as Arthurian. An amazing few weeks. These places would fit your view nicely. A short list would be; 'Caer Laeverock' outside Carlisle may be his birthplace, there are legends of a Gorlois and Ygraine owning a fifth century wooden castle there. The roman "Camboglanna" hill fort along Hadrians wall may be Camlaan. Peel Castle, on Peel Island off the Isle of Man, is of great interest. She gives full explanations of her conclusions with mountains of sources. Anyway, give her a read. It is very dry and scholarly, but a great read, as well. Forgive some of my spelling of place names.

Camlann is at Falkirk btw and it’s still called camlann. Caerlaverock is nearer Dumfries only 5 miles out, quite a bit closer than Carlisle which is now in England.

Good views abound everywhere. But a few not to be missed are 1. Scott's View, a must, and you don't even need to get out your car. 2. Park in Melrose and climb the Eildon Hills. 3. Park in Denholm near Hawick and climb Ruberslaw. Thanks for the comments!!

Goodrich also wrote books about Merlin and Guinevere. Dry, scholarly reading, but very interesting content. She identifies Merlin as an historical figure, and Guinevere as a pagan priestess.

Typically, the orthodoxy is wrong. Expedient, but wrong. I’ve always been convinced the real Arthur was the fellow in Scotland. I still read Tennyson every year, but if truth be told, the guy was a Scottish general. Some of us Yanks still care about this!
@cymro6537
@cymro6537 3 жыл бұрын
'Scottish general' ? I'm afraid not ; simply for the reason that the Scots were Irish - and had yet to arrive in Scotland.Had Arthur existed at all,he would've been a Romano British general - Romano British meaning of a hybrid Latinised Brythonic culture.The language spoken at the time in what eventually become Scotland was a proto Welsh and also Pictish.Scots Gaelic would eventually arrive from Ireland - subsequently displacing the aforementioned languages...

Really informative videos about our local area. There is a theory that king arthur could be buried at arthuret longtown st michaels church. The site of the battle of the solway moss as well is located on the very same place. And the battle of affyrd also. Not correct spelling. Would be great location for a video. It has an ancient well too.

Arthur was Artur MacAedan son of Aedan MacGabran the high king of the British Isles. Know to the Cymru as Aedan the Tyrant or as he was called Uther, Uther Pendragon. Artur was a prince who would be the next Pendragon but died in battle. One of their important seats was in Dal Riata now Argyle. They fought in the borders and northern England against the Saxons, they also fought the Cymru or as they are now called welsh, the Britton’s who were all the way up the west coast to Dumbarton which was called Alt Clut.

Hello Mark my name is Edwin waddill thank you for all the stow of wedale videos you make my ancestors were known as the de wedale's . One of the earliest was Adam de wedale and his brother Walter de neweton and Adam de Gordon William lurnach they were outlawed by king William the lion in 1204 . They took refuge in holy island and king John sent his sheriff of Northumberland to retain them . Do you have any knowledge on where I can find out more about their history and why were they outlawed and forfeited in the kingdom of Scotland. sincerely Edwin waddill

I loved your videos as well. As a Native American born in the United States everyone thought it was strange that I have always been obsessed with Merlin and the Arthurian legends. To the point of fighting with my Dad that they were in fact real prople. I read everything I can and watch all the docs I can. One day I hope to visit the places you were at. It would be an honor to place stones on the graves of these people. Thank you for your generous time to make these videos.

I take it you never went to the Altarstone, or Stobo Kirk, both near Drumelzier? Legend states that Kentigern {St Mungo) met with Merlin and Christened him on a standing stone called the Altarstone. This still stands across the Tweed from Drumelzier Haugh, opposite the entrance to Altarstone Farm. Kentigern had a monastic cell at Stobo, and a modern replica of this in Stobo Kirk has a stained glass window of this legend. Bowden Hill, SW of Linlithgow, was originally Buden Hill, stands by Muiravonside, and is a much better candidate for the Battle of Badon than Bath. A mass gave of Briton warriors was once found in the area.

That name keeps popping up inmy genealogical searches,...Alasatir Moffat. I haven't paid any heed...now i come and watch your video, since becoming more inclined toward the idea of Southern Picts (either Oppenheimer or Sykes described my DNA that way...quintessentially "indigenous"...i.e., not irish...i.e., "Pictish"...thing is, I traced my ancestor to Cowal, Argyll...Pictish is a rather odd way to decribe a Campbell don't you think? lol....It is what it is...been using the DNA to dig further...all the hits seem to be toward Ayr. I was betting Craignish myslef. Shrug. Strathclyde looms. All the hits are around Glasgow, Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire... Now now that name again at t eend of your video...Moffat. I can take a hint. Thanks. Off to find a book.

None of this is proof of anything, its just assumes old legends and stories are true. Your standard for evidence could be applied all around England and the Welsch will certainly disagree with you as well
