The British people don't want guns or need them. We feel safe in this country because we know that it is highly unlikely that another member of the public has one. If a politician or member of the royal family's protection team were to actually shoot a member of the public (something I'm not sure has ever happened), then they would not be doing it lightly and would have a lot more checks and balances to go through than everybody else really.
