The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is one of the most dangerous snakes in the world. They are long, fast, and highly venomous. Sounds like the perfect pet. But is this extremely deadly snake actually as good of a pet as it sounds? We travel to NERD ( / nerdreptilesinc ) to find out if the king cobra is the best pet snake for you, and to meet Lilith, the coolest snake in the entire world.

I live in SEA where King Cobras are part of the local species here. About 7 years ago, when i was working for an NGO where their hq was in a retreat center in the middle of the jungle, we had a lot of encounters with snakes at the beginning because we didn't really know how to snake proof our buildings. Because everyone was from the city, it scared a lot of us... even wild boars and big insects scared a lot of us coz we weren't used to being in this type of environment. So the company hired a snake expert to teach us about venomous, mildly venomous and non venomous snakes. He was a snake specialist for the fire brigade and if there were any cases of snakes entering people's homes, he would be the first to be called nationwide. So during that training session, he brought a lot of different species of local snakes to educate us, along with it he brought 3 of his fully grown King Cobras. What he mentioned was, while it's definitely a no for regular people like us to handle king cobras, but for a professional like him who need to respond to emergencies, he prefers to handle king cobras compared to a normal cobra. Since king cobras has a better temperament, especially if it's a huge one. Cobras however, are more dangerous since they are strike happy. He even had one cobra puncture it's own lower jaw in attempt to bite him to escape capture. I did ask him if he is ever scared of having to handle these venomous snakes, but he said no, because he is always ready to die every day to save people's lives. Unfortunately, i found out through the newspapers that he passed away from a snake bite about 3 years ago. Since he is quite famous in the country, his death was reported in the local newspaper. He was bitten by a cobra that he was trying to extract out of someone's home during an emergency call. It was really sad a great loss to us, he have saved countless of people from potentially dying from venomous snakes in their homes. May he rest in peace. It's just like what you mentioned... if you handle these snakes enough times, it's just a matter of time before you get bitten by one.

Yeah, I remember 15-20 years ago the faunaclassified forums were filled with ads of "venomoid" snakes. Always hurt me. It's lie humans trying to eat a burger with almost no saliva...it can be done but is not how we were meant to do it. Also, you have no idea how good of an operation is was. Nature is very good at repairing injured body parts..who's to say that the surgery got the entire venom gland to where the snake cannot produce any venom.

Honestly I'd love to own one as a pet! I don't even really like reptiles, especially snakes(Mammals forever!) but the Komodo Dragon is the one I make an exception for. They just looks so damn cute and cuddly. Handleability: -1 because they're too big to be picked up and also venomous. Might be docile if gotten from an egg though... Care: 0-2 idk this one could be either or depending on where you live. Due to their size, they must be kept outdoors in a large enclosure. However, when it comes to food they aren't picky eaters so at least feeding it and getting it to eat won't be an issue. Hardiness: 0 well they're a reptile that's going to have to be kept outdoors, and they're from a tropical warm island so if you live anywhere that gets cold, you probably won't be able to keep it. Availability:-3 I can't imagine that there are too many people willing to go out and grab eggs from them in the wild, nor are there that many bred in captivity. Up-front costs: -5 If you do manage to find one for sale, I can't imagine it being cheap. You'll probably have to get numerous permits and building it's enclosure is almost definitely not cheap. Yeah based on these criteria its not a good pet, but come on if you had a freaking Komodo Dragon, you'd be by far the coolest mf out there and that alone makes them a good pet. Plus as far as reptiles go, they are pretty smart so you could actually train them to some degree.

The take away for me is if you want a cobra get a false water cobra; nowhere near as bad-tempered and only mildly venomous, and still does a pretty good imitation of the cobra hood to.

Maybe the most gorgeous snake I got to handle as a kid was a Jaffa snake with removed venom glands. It was one of those heartbreaking moments when you realise the thing that let's you interact safely with this animal is something traumatic and unfair, (again not done by the people hosting that event) and that, no, I was never going to have my own Jaffa snake. But it was really cool that I got to meet her.
