When you have multiple musicians who are incredibly talented, the risk of having them try to outdo one another is high. However when you get the right kind of musicians who don't try and hog the spotlight it's a rare and magical thing to see. This is a perfect example of talent not outshining one another.

I think something worth noting is that introduction to Indiscipline that Bill handles solo was done by three drummers on the last tour. Definitely not slagging on Pat, Jeremy, or Gavin, as they were wonderful and the interplay between them was great and added so much, but the aplomb with which Bill pulls this off is nothing short of astounding.

I am 62 years old, I live in a small town in Argentina. I had the privilege of knowing the extraordinary music of King Crimson, I knew nothing about them until the '80s. For me, and from what I felt that time, this is the most impressive line-up of this band. April, 23rd, 2024.

Where in the fuck was I when this all went down. I knew Belew from Zappa, Bowie and Talking Heads but I totally missed KC. Damn, what a perfect blend of fluent players. As close as one gets to perfection. Then I heard Heartbeat and remembered the song. I was sure this was a cover and searched for the original artist. It came back to King Crimson. I always wanted to see KC, I was only 6 when this concert was filmed. I discovered them when they reformed as the deadly double trio and released Thrak, what a sonic experience!!! Being a drummer I had to meet Bruford, it just so happened that in 2007 he was giving limited engagement drum tutorials , met him in Toronto, what an absolute humble genius. How he spoke of percussion only elevated my playing until I met Danny a year later in a small bar in Detroit touring with Volto! One would not think that he would let just anyone sit next to him while he had his arms dipped in a bucket of ice water, we talked everything from the love of Lamborghinis, ( he had one) to UFO’s , basketball , to the need to stay humble. People may talk negatively about Tool, but they are without a doubt the greatest rock band of all time.

I keep coming back to comment, as this is just such a wonderful gift to us. I remember the excitement when KC came back on the scene in the '80s. I was a younger fan, having discovered ITCOCK and following works during the hiatus, and was so stoked to get to be part of the initial fandom of this new incarnation. As I watch this performance it comes back how RF, then 36, seemed to me so much the elder rock statesman but now looks so young to my eyes that his genius seems almost precocious. Time is alternatively relative, fixed, and illusory, all in the same moment. This is part of the power of music.

Fripp always wrote & played for “Head, Heart & Hips”… I honestly don’t believe Bobby Fripp “tamped” any one's energy and joy in playing in Crimson…I was lucky enough to see Adrian Belew when rehearsing he was with Talking Heads’ initial “full band” line-up. I was only a few feet and able see how intense and yes, joyful while the he was playing. Granted it’s hard to not have fun playing music like the “Head’s” back then, but it was obvious he was in heaven playing their music. Belew’s next gig was Crimson which judging from this concert, and the one I was able to see, that joy was continued with Fripp, Bruford & Levin. Listen to the intensity that Levin & Bruford were bringing, how could you note be ecstaticplaying in that group. Yes, Fripp required note-perfect playing, but at the same time an intensity that honestly, I don’t believe any other group surpassed…

Allowed out of the cage for "Indiscipline," reined in otherwise. I mean, he plays from a freakin' stool, our man Fripp. In a 3 pc suit oftentimes. I think he'd prefer they all follow suit, no pun intended. If a musician is interesting otherwise, he seems to suffer their idiosyncracies to a small extent. Odd, to me, as pre-Belew/Levin, the entire catalog seems a paean to idiosyncracies. I guess it's a matter of type/degree.

@@Dramalius According to Trey Gunn, King Crimson is a rock band, just one with a very unique vocabulary. (I read an interview once with him where he stated something like that.)

Back in the mid-80's I remember discovering this unassuming VHS tape in a tiny local video store in Portland OR. Ended up renting it several times to re-watch. Finally hooked up the audio output through my stereo system so I could rip the audio to a cassette tape which I then wore out in the car. So these particular performances have a special resonance for me.

Absolutely astounded. Saw Belew and Levin just this past Tuesday (2024-10-22) along with Steve Vai (in place of Fripp) and Danny Carey (in place of Bruford) on their BEAT tour and I swear to you they sounded JUST LIKE THIS!! It was glorious and fantastic!! If you love this era of King Crimson you owe it to yourself to go see BEAT - there are still quite a few shows left on the tour!

Belew and his friends are truly geniuses. Very technical, enchanting music, so full of emotions. What an achievement! I will never get enough of it.

Forever listenable, it's so complex and interesting, and musical. If you like this sort of music, that is. I know a few who find it just noise, but that's how it goes. Top 40 satisfies such folks.

"The Sheltering" (13:54) : Love that reed sound on Robert's guitar during. Sounds like a balloon exhaling though a tiny aperture. The sound Adrian is making with his guitar at 16:54 is crazy good. This song sounds like something from "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" by David Byrne and Brian Eno (highly recommended).

@@BroonParker It was no secret among musicians in that late 70s early 80s time that experimentation with sounds, patterns, images from Asia & Africa was ongoing. Fripp & Summers made "I Advance Masked" it wasn't just Eno & Byrne with MLITBOG. I don't think anyone for a minute would imagine Adrian Belew was not influenced by David Byrne in stage presence and singing style, to various extents, and probably also by Zappa and those in the Mothers when he was there. That's just how it goes with influences. Apart from influence, I hear no aping between the two, maybe an indirect dialogue.

Not to mention the bassist managing to use his bass as a percussion instrument much of the time as well. KC was always way ahead of the curve… and for folks who are musicians they are amazing inspirations to watch / listen to.

Damn, the way Belew bends the neck against the body… you gotta wonder how many strats he went through per tour in those days! Do that enough and they won’t hold a tune any more! Damn.

I saw KC Nov 22 1981 at the UC San Diego gym. Somehow scraped the $7.50 together for a gen admin ticket, walked over from the dorm. No problem getting to the front on Fripp’s side, close enough to touch his guitar (I didn’t). I still haven’t emotionally recovered.
