Yes, please, to a video on the Rough Wooing! I’ve never learned any details about it, only the most general statements about what happened. I love every video you make, anyway, but this is one of those often-ignored events and would be an interesting topic. Marriage-related events weren’t trivial, they really affected political history until quite recently; those among the royal and some noble lines, had much more than personal, or even dynastic, importance.

Please do make a video about the rough wooing! I would love to watch that. Also, I appreciate your comment about reading history backwards. Please, don’t sweal away, Dr. Kat! Fan noise is nothing, stay cool. Enjoy your few summer days. I wish we could exchange weather sometimes, here in Northern California we get at least four months of super-hot and dry summer, when I dream of snowy mountains and misty, cool rain. The British who move here absolutely adore the weather. The summer weather is late this year, it’s still spring-cool, ranging from the low 50s overnight to 70s during the day, Fahrenheit that is, but the heat always comes eventually.

Sacramento, California here, and it’s currently 82* with a high of 89* today. The difference between here and there is that everything here is air conditioned. We leave our air conditioned homes in our air conditioned vehicles and go into stores and buildings that all have A/C. It gets up to 114* or so here, but since I don’t have to be out in it, it’s not so bad. And I love that we don’t have to deal with snow. I was actually in London this time last year, and I was delighted with how nice the weather was while I was there. When I popped out of the tube station in Trafalgar Square, it was just gorgeous out. All that to say, fan away, stay comfortable and keep doing what you do. I’m absorbing everything I can before I head to the Tudor exhibit in San Francisco next month. 😊

What a wonderful speaker you are! That, in addition to the quality of your research and content, make you the best. It’s such a pleasure to listen to someone so well-informed and articulate after all the nonsense on YT videos. You must be bringing thousands to want to learn more history. I got interested in it, as many children do, when reading a book set in history, the US Revolutionary War, when I was about 8, the kids were heroes, of course. Within a few years I was skipping over the historical fiction and going straight to the real thing. I do approve of historical fiction, though, it’s the “Gateway Drug”, so to speak (there are worse addictions than reading history). But, the more accurate the historical fiction is, the better. Even a little general history from historical novels is better than learning none at all.

Daniel Ellsberg, the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers, died today at the age of 92. I just spent quite some time delving into his history, the Papers themselves, the Vietnam War, and the major players. I'm taking a little break right now due to eye strain (I'm reading it all on my cellphone), but I think I have several days of fascinating research ahead of me. Thanks to this channel, I have renewed my passions for history and research! 😍💞

OP, I couldn’t agree more! Historical fiction has been my favorite genre since before I knew that’s what it was called.. I just always loved the idea of true events and very true stories woven together artistically with some added fictional details. It’s still my favorite genre to read, if you have any great recommendations I’m all ears! I’ve been searching for a new novel

@tianna1116 Have you read "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance"? "Winds of War" chronicles the years prior to the United States' entry into WWII and "War and Remembrance" is about the years after the bombing of Pearl Harbor until slightly after the war's end through the eyes of one US naval family and their friends. They're fascinating, informative, and exciting books, well worth the read.

As I was watching this video, I was struck by the similarities between these rebellions and those of the Civil Wars of the 17th century. First there were religious reforms being autocratically imposed by the monarch and his bishops, mainly Cramner and Laud. Cramner and Laud had very different religious sensibilities, Cramner being very Protestant in his views while Laud was much more High Church. Being a High Church Episcopalian myself, I find myself more in agreement with Laud than with Cramner on the issues, but they were both arrogant and presumptuous in their implementation. Laud was particularly high-handed. Also, enclosure was still an issue in the 1640s, and for all of his faults, King Charles I believed in maintaining the traditional common lands and protecting them from "privatization" (to use a modern term). No wonder Parliament was so upset with him! The more things change, the more they stay the same.🙄

As I commented on your previous Edward VI video, poor child - people he presumably trusted gone, whether fairly or not - I'd love to know who gave him actual love - perhaps an old nurse, do we know? I feel so sorry for him, and of course for 'his half-sisters. What cruel times they were.

It’s no wonder boy Kings were viewed as undesirable. Henry VI was very lucky to have two loyal uncles who also had the advantage of being of the blood Royal and protected him and his throne throughout his minority. Edward V was very unlucky that his Royal uncle did not protect his ( or his brother’s) birthright. Then, there’s this Edward. His uncles were not of the blood Royal and that caused jealousy, envy and unrest until Somerset was replaced. Infighting is dangerous and unsettling.

Thank you, excellent history. For those interested in the rebellion of 1549 in the west country I would also recommend 'The Commotion Time' by E.T.Fox, Helion Press. As a Cornishman I first learnt of my counties rebellions during the Tudor period about 60+ years ago and am pleased that there is an apparent growing interest in Devon and Cornwall studies. However, you need to be discerning. For example I have been told, when revisiting Cornwall, that I had suffered from an Anglo-Saxon education ! Also in another publication I read that the Pope had allowed the Cornish to hold their services in their own language and not Latin as did every other Catholic; this I find very, very difficult to believe. I celebrate the history and culture of my birthplace, but not its divisiveness when it descends into nationalism with its partner, arrogance. I found this channel to be well balanced, interesting and stimulating. I have signed up for more; and 'rung the bell' 😊

Hi from Virginia USA. I'm texting that I enjoy your page. My cousin did some research on our ancestors on my mother's side. My cousin found out that Queen Jane Seymour, her two brothers and her son King Edward VI are on my family tree. Edward Seymour Duke of Somerset is my 13th great grandfather and his brother Thomas Seymour is my 13th great uncle and King Edward VI is cousin. Lady Godiva and her husband is also on my family tree. It nearly blew my mom and myself away. I got a book on King Edward VI and I can't believe that my grandfather and uncle got beheaded for what they did. Wish I could come to England to visit the sights. To me England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales are beautiful countries. Hope to hear from you on my comment. God bless.

I believe 11yr. Old King Edward would have been aware of a deception ...by being held (imprisoned) in a castle and not a palace by his manipulative uncle. After all King Henry 8 made sure Prince Edward’s Tutelage in ways of Parliament and Court, of conducting conversation, and being one step ahead. Even at 11 he would not have been unaware of what was going on.

@kellyparkes9087 Жыл бұрын
@@briandelaney9710 oooh I'd love to hear your reasons for this as Edward VI divides such opinion as you hear contemporaries during his reign say he was such a sweet natured and gentle boy whereas historian's say he had already become such a religious zealot by the time of his death at age 15 that he could of been even worse than his father. I've read many accounts and he seemed such a strong willed and stubborn young man, often crying with rage when he couldn't get his own way due to his council having the final say until he came of age, which he was just a few months shy of at his death. And then we have to look at the way he treated his sister Mary. It would of been interesting to see how that would of played out if he had recovered from his illness, and go on to marry and have children and Mary never would have been queen. She probably still would of died six years later but would he of made an example of her before then in a horrible way. It's a terrfrying thought, one I hope Dr Kat may investigate in one of her next videos!!!

I have been wondering, over the course of a few episodes, exactly how expensive paper was over time. It seems that when the printing press really got going, paper started to show up everywhere, but that before that it was hard to come by and rather precious. Did the explosion of paper come about from increased demand, or were there improvements in technology? Paper (and the lack of it, in terms of scant personal effects such as diaries) seems to be at the center of the Early Modern Period.

I’ve just had an “aha” moment. Seems King Edward’s family on his mother’s side caused quite a bit of trouble for the nation. Henry VIII thought Jane Seymour to be the most noble of his wives, the best of the best, of course she didn’t live long enough to become a problem for him, however as it turns out her family did become a problem which leads me to believe Jane herself may not have had the best life with Henry had she survived childbirth complications. If Jane hadn’t cause Henry grief, her ambitious family may have. There’s always been the “what if” question for me regarding Jane. What if she had lived? What if she and Henry had more children together? Would Henry’s egregious behavior ended? Would Mary and Elizabeth ever ascended the throne?
