I'm giving you a bit more than the usual tidbit (I'm such a tease) this week because it seems to flow like one, sweet and nostalgic segment. Summers for us were always about taking the show on the road.
This clip honors the touring days of the moms and Alvino and ends with an announcement of the family's first summer tour. I toured with the family from the time I was 7 years old til after high school. Some of the best memories of my life are of all those cities and theaters. Some were musty old majestic palaces to theaters in the round which were usually outdoor tents smelling of summer rain with lightening, thunder and insane humidity under those hot lights, to state fairs with the squeals of folks on the carnival rides in the background. Many of you saw us live for the first time that summer of 1965.
In my soon to be released autobiography many of us kids recount memories of all our years on the road. And as many of you know, a few of you were selected to also share your memories of us during those long summer days and nights as kids and teenagers. ( And I gotta tell you, they are hilarious and poignant. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up!)
So as summer '23 winds down (how is that possible already??) I thought this would be an appropriate selection for our opening numbers collection. Back in those days nobody went back to school until the last drop of lemonade was squeezed out of summertime... but that's another story...
