I have the deepest love and respect for the memory of this gracious King. George VI displayed a devotion to duty we rarely see in the present day. God bless Your Late Majesty and thank you for your daughter, HM Queen Elizabeth II!! God Save The Queen!

All these years later, this speech is still inspirational. It is simple, but the conviction of the King can be felt. As someone with a slight speech impediment I have an understanding of what the King went through. I also respect and admire him for the way he overcame his shyness. He remains an inspiration to everyone with a speech impediment.

I was 10 years old when our dear King spoke those words which sent cold shivers down my spine and even today when I hear them they affect me the same. Our dear King and Queen gave us the strength and encouragement to be strong during those dark days of war. God Bless Them.

Thank God for King George. He, and his peoples, stood at the gate of the year that was dark...and he, and they, together, found a way....for us. We inherited freedom from our late King and our forefathers and foremothers. It is our humble duty, to him and to them, to build on their fortitude to build a better world...for every one of us. Together. That is what monarchy means. A person to embody fortitude and the future, for the people, with the people.

Lionel: You still stammered on the 'W'. George: Well I had to throw in a few so they knew it was me.

And he was such a great Father - and his wife such a great Mother - he gave us a Monarch with none of the hangups that caused his problem.

Watch 'the kings speech' gives a great insight into how hard he worked to be able to overcome his stammer and give this speech

His speeches were inspirational. They contrasted greatly with Winston Churchill. The King made people think why they were fighting. He also gave/gives hope and enouragement to those who have speech impediments.

For the benefit of people listening to this great broadcast not 20 years since the BBC was founded by a man who had never been raised to be king, and the marvellous words about stepping out into the darkness which my mum heard as a child, and were read out at her funeral over 70 years later, "MRP" = "Molotov-Ribbentrop pact" - so the beginnings of the wartime death and destruction were hatched between Hitler and Stalin. Poland has never regained her eastern territories, occupied by the Red Army.

Harold Jameson We didn't start it we only declared war when Germany invaded Poland and only then after we had delivered to Germany an ultimatum. Germany started WW2 and deserved everything they got.

Yes, several other duties. He opened Parliament every year, he would read and sign many types of government documents. He held investitures where he would award medals, bestow titles and knighthoods. He would undertake tours of the UK, also foreign and Commonwealth countries; also greet and preside at state banquets for foreign dignitaries during their visits to Britain. He alone had the power to formally declare war (on the advice of the government of the day). I could go on and on......

The war really started on 23 August 1939 when the MRP was signed (with the corresponding secret pact) and Europe was divided. I have seen documentaries where German soldiers in Poland tell they were asked to withdraw from a winning position. That means the war started IN AN OFFICE where it was decided how far the two armies could attack.

Wut lol? As per other comments it is well known that Germany (and its vassal Slovakia) and the Soviet Union started the war. Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, the UK responded on 3 September, a sunny Sunday, by declaring war on Germany.

A lot of countries have never regained their territories occupied by the Red Army. Putin and his buddies say it's because Russia and Soviet Union are two COMPLETELY different countries. They aren't every time the "Liberating" Red Army is discussed obviously. Of course the Polish example is the most brutal - the whole country was literally MOVED westwards.

"The cause of Christian civilization" - the King stood for what is right. Too bad the queen today and her mad son have abandoned that cause.
