As an American I am really pleased that there was such a mob of citizens on hand to welcome him back to wherever his landing site was. Just tells me how popular the monarchy is there and I think that the Crown Prince today embodies that spirit back.

He was the first King of Norway in 800 years, the first democratically elected king (he said he would be king only if all of Norway voted on a monarchy), he denied German calls for surrender in WWII and preserved the democratic institutions when the war started, then after having left for the UK in exile continued to organize resistance. He is the embodiment of what a good (constitutional) monarch should be. Think of him like a combination between Washington with Lincoln.

Fascinating footage. A question for Norwegian readers: did the King make his speech in Norwegian? I have read that, being Danish-born, he never did learn to speak the language but perhaps he was able have it translated and then to read it out in Norwegian?
@ruralor Жыл бұрын
He always spoke in Danish his entire life. All his speeches were in Danish, this one as well. But written Norwegian is basically the same as written Danish, it's only in the spoken form that they differ quite a bit. So as long as the Danish speaker will try to speak slowly and clearly, and as close to the written form as possible, then almost everyone in Norway will understand. With Swedish it is the opposite. Norwegian and Swedish are very similar when spoken, but it is more different when it comes to writing, with very different spelling and ortography. I am Norwegian myself, but I will say that I understand all 3 languages reasonably well.

I find his speech quite understandable. As OP explained, Norwegian and Danish are already very very similar in terms of vocubulary, but has different prononciations, but Haakon VII spoke something that kinda sounded like a mix between Danish and Norwegian pronounciation, quite easy to understand imo.
@ruralor Жыл бұрын
@@TheArrowedKnee Yes, he tried to "Norwegify" his pronouciation a little bit. Like, all the words where Danish has a hard k ("kære"), but Norwegian has a soft k ("kjære"), King Haakon often ended up with some kind of hybrid version ("k-i-ære"). But there isn't that much, it's mostly Danish. Another factor in this is that very posh and formal Danish is easier for us Norwegians to understand. Try to listen to a speech by Queen Margrethe, it's always quite easy. Watching a Danish movie is harder.
@Ettibridget Жыл бұрын
My late father was old enough to remember his radio speeches during the war and he said: "He never learned norwegian but the norwegians loved him!" And that's true. I am danish and I will say he spoke danish 'adjusted' to norwegian. The two languages are very similar, but of course there are differences and 'false friends'. However with the king there was NO problem as he spoke slowly and clearly. And no one ever questioned his language skills. Edit: I can recommend this video about the three monarchs. Truly remarkable. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZy6eH-whtSGo80si=04Ck8qnmzqPEDlSc

The Danish and Norwegian kings were anti-nazi. Unfortunstely can not be said about the Swedish royal family.
@mochtegerndane7097 Жыл бұрын
Well - Crown Princess Ingrid of Denmark was a strong anti-fascist from the day she arrived in Denmark, from Sweden. She really took up the fight to keep the south of Jutland to be annexed by the nazis - and she knew exactly was she was doing. BTW she worked very closely with a left social democrat. So - this Bernadotte passed every test with flying colors.

Your statement about the Swedish royal family is simplistic and silly. While King Gustav V behaved poorly, the Crown Prince of Sweden and his British born wife, Crown Princess Louise, were certainly anti Nazi as were Prince Carl and Princess Ingeborg - the parents of Crown Princess Marthe of Norway and the late Queen Astrid of the Belgians. Princess Ingeborg was also the sister of King Christian X of Denmark and King Haakon of Norway and made no secret of her allied sympathies.

@@DukeofDenmark2 It's more likely that the Norwegians originally came from people who settled around what is modern-day Denmark, Southern Sweden, and Northern Germany. Also the first king of Norway (after independence in 1905) was a Danish prince. The royal family of Norway today is still of the same house as the Danish one.
