Well, here is KCIII, a forward-thinking monarch, trying to open up Royal Lodge to tourists to bring in extra revenue to offset operating costs. The entry fees, gift shop & cafe would also help fund the repairs & upkeep. Andrew needs to vacate the property and move into Frogmore.

It was nobody's damned business. Then, she and her family present the world with a video showing that they are all doing well and happy that she has finished with NINE MONTHS of chemotherapy (which is no walk in the park), and all anybody can do is criticize the quality of the video ("Too slick") and the kinds of scenes that were included. Shame on you all! I am relieved to see Her Royal Highness looking and feeling better. I am thrilled to see the Prince of Wales and the children looking happy. Last time she/KP issued a short statement, eg about her operation, everybody started speculating wildly online that she had mysteriously 'disappeared', giving rise to the 'where's Kate' idiocy. It seems she just can't win. This very short (3 min) video was quite obviously designed to address a number of issues around which there has been a lot of online gossip and speculation: the offensive rumours about her marriage; her whereabouts and state of mental and physical health; when she's likely to return to a public role; how the children are coping. It was also designed to connect to other people in her situation and try to give them a sense of hope and comradeship, because this is the sort of thing the royals are expected to do, even when they are seriously ill themselves.

This is more up close and personal, hinting at Catherine's health struggle but much more sending a positive message. It is presented in a very romantic, cinematic style. And people love it a lot. Which is what was intended. While I do believe that this might well be what the family is like in private I am not naive enough to oversee that this is a pr action aimed at the masses. And it did not fail to impress. Never forget that the RF's purpose today is to represent to stay relevant - and these guys do a pretty good job.

Quite honestly in a few years, one of the kids will remember it as an awful, forced afternoon, playing happy families. I’ve never seen William grit his teeth like that either. The way it was cut showed they couldn’t make an authentic or convincing connection between husband and wife. It was over-produced, mawkish; hopefully an aberration. They’ve been married 12 years. They don’t have to pretend to be deeply into each other anymore. That isn’t realistic in most marriages.

But you make a very important point. Royal popularity is an issue of state. Every institution - and that includes the press - is invested in that popularity and (increasingly) pretending it exists. Because without it, how does the King’s assent give legitimacy to laws his people do not want, that go against their interests? Lose that popularity or the perception it exists and suddenly, everything has less legitimacy. The whole establishment.
