This is the most beautiful hymn tune of King of Glory. I have it as my hymn at my funeral (whenever that will be in the distant future). I am moved to tears every time I hear it.

I sang along with this hymn today, 12 July 2015. I am a housebound Catholic, and used this as the hymn for the Office Of Readings in the Liturgy Of The Hours.

David, from the very first time I sang this with you there, I was moved to tears. Your tune and that text fit like they were made for each other. The angels inspired you. Thank you for this, my friend

"General Seminary" One of my favorites, a real tear-jerker.
@forestgreenkingsfoldorgang10776 жыл бұрын
choirboyfromhell1 it is a tear-jerker for sure. The melodic contours (the descending scales) remind me of the quarter peal of Stedman Caters, and Stedman Caters peal (when it is half-muffled) is *definitely a tear-jerker* Therefore, General Seminary is a tear-jerker of a melody.

We've had several formal occasions in the past few months, including Ordination. Even with visiting choirs (and plenty of soprano/tenor power) the descant has not been used. It is very sad. It is truly beautiful.

King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me; thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me; and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enroll thee: e'en eternity's too short to extol thee. Words: George Herbert, 1633 Music: Gwalchmai, General Seminary, Salve cordis gaudium, Jesu, meines Herzens Freud'

No kidding, Mrstevebournias. The classic Aeolian-Skinner tone is too good. I can't imagine anything more suitable for a public house of worship.

I'd love to hear this tune cross the pond and replace the rather insipid 'Gwalchmai' we have in the Anglican church. Would have liked to hear the v3 descant in this recording, though.....

Hello, my name is Donald Mayer. I can tell you like music as I do. My mother was a church organist. I live in Coplay, Pennsylvania. Let me wish you a happy Thanksgiving holiday. There are so many fine hymns to be enjoyed. This is one of them. Have a good day.

It is a beautiful tune. Too bad there is not an alto part written for it in the hymnal. It is not in my range, and I wish I could participate more fully.

Let's remember, please, that the HYMN is the TEXT, by St. George Herbert. The tune is not the hymn; it is the tune. In this instance might be 'General Seminary' or "Gwalchmai' or any other with meter 74 74 D. A niggling detail in some folks' opinion, but worship is not "Alice in Wonderland" and correct terms do matter.

Deacon David Oatney I know. I am familiar with General Seminary. Since it's a bittersweet tune like Kingsfold is, I use the names "Kingsfold" and "General Seminary" as slang for bittersweet.
