Raie Da Costa (piano)
HMV B-3538 (recorded 17 July 1930, issued October 1930)
Apart from the brilliant Da Costa, this is one for keen and geeky ears. It was recorded in Studio A at Hayes, the smaller of the two studios A and B. C was the Small Queen’s Hall on the second floor of the Queen’s Hall building on Langham Place. (The likes of Hylton and the Savoy bands used B and C.) At the very start of the first side the two warning buzzes for the performer to start are clearly audible; on the second side, they are there, but less noticeable. At Columbia, the sequence was: one buzz for stand-by; two for silence; and a red light for start performing.
The film, the King Of Jazz was produced by Universal in 2-strip Technicolor, and premiered in April 1930. Its first UK showing was 17 July at a ‘King of Jazz’ carnival at the ‘Thames Riviera, Hampton Court’. Appearing live at the event were ‘Whispering’ Jack Smith, Hal Kemp and his orchestra, and Eddie Grossbart and his Ambassadors Club band.
Da Costa (1905 - 1934) was 25 at the time of this recording. She was a leading exponent of the syncopated pianism of that era.
The tunes are:
Side 1 - It Happened in Monterey; Ragamuffin Romeo; It Happened in Monterey
Side 2 - A Bench in the Park; Happy Feet; A Bench in the Park.
The combination of tunes looks not to have been based on artistic considerations. Rather, it was decided by who was the music publisher. Side 1’s tunes are Francis, Day & Hunter Ltd; side 2’s are Lawrence Wright Music Co.
Yes, side 1’s label is smaller: it plays about 43 seconds longer.
