re: the "Press the button in a timely manner when landing" thing on Stage 4 and 7, there's a 2-frame window in which you have to press any of the buttons to make the monster land on his feet, and the game rewards you with a 1-Up. There's a 4 frame window before that where the monster will bounce off the ground and you get a consolation prize of 1000 points. This 4 frame consolation window doesn't exist for late presses, only early - so a lot of times you just get nothing since you don't have much time to react to the monster appearing on screen for it.

First AES game I ever bough (Well, that and World Heroes)t! I never knew the grapples were pre-determined though, but its annoying that you have to essentially cheese the game to win, as youll never win them after a certain level. Same as 3 Count Bout. >.>

i LOVED the SNES release! I tried playing rhe arcade version at one point and was so confused as to why it was more difficult. To see both games side by side now, it looks like the SNES port really did thr homework of improving the original

I love King of the Monsters 2 Alec. I remember playing this game and enjoyed destroying the enemy bosses. Man, the design of the hideous looking creatures use to scare me and the final bosses use to terrify me with nightmares bro. Welp, SNK sure did an outstanding job spooking the bejeezus out of me with this gem of a title. Thank you for sharing this with us Alec. Same, but the game should have had selectable bosses in vs mode and unlockable bosses in campaign mode (like Ninja Combat had). Game also needs more animation frames for basic moves as they are bare minimum in frame count. While I like the art and designs of the kaiju in this one, the simple gameplay, weak mode choices, and lack of unlockable characters really hold it back. A hack version could fix alot of this game's shortcomings tho.

In the falling sequences you must press the button with correct timing to land perfectly. Very hard to do, but you land successfully you're awarded an extra life (it appears as a G-Mantle icon).

Growing up I had this game for SNES. I never saw it for Sega as a kid, pretty cool you can play as the boss monsters in that version.

A mega-sized video for a mega-sized game. Swimming mechanic in a beat'em up, that's kinda cool. Probably more fun than the platforming in Double Dragon on the N.E.S.

It’s funny how unlike say the movie industry. Sequels are better on games than the originals usually. Due to technology and feedback on problems with the first game in a new series. Its just unique and interesting

22:11 The grappling in this one isn't about tapping the button as fast as you can, but tapping it once, at the right time. You rock back and forth in a grapple, you got to tap the button at the right frame of animation (I forget which, it's been a while since I played it: either when you are back or forth). There are 2 phases to grappling too: a winning & losing phase (see 8:57) Woo starts the grapple winning (he's shaking the boss) then he is in the losing phase (the boss is shaking him, due to tapping the button at the wrong frame of animation) then Woo loses the losing phase and has the wrestling done on him by the boss. It seems the wrestling moves do the most damage and would move the game along faster, but they are hard to execute and win. So, I never use them; the risk isn't worth the reward. It seems this game was made for 2-players and the difficulty wasn't scaled down for 1-player. This would have been a much better game without the boss rush at the end, for that, the 1st game is my favorite of the 2.

I always thought the grappling was based on taking turns. The player usually wins the first 2, then the boss wins 2-3 in a row before shifting back to the player. If you die, the turns are reset to the player. The tapping aspect certainly is interesting, will have to do some tests. If it's true and mastered it really does make the game a lot easier.

Yep, grappling usually happens when the bosses charges at you or you charge at them. Sometimes to win it, you get lucky to get the right frames, or if you happen to not push any button (including movement) your character may start to win the grapple, that's where you push the button, but moving will make you lose the grapple. Least that's what happens to me. I never grapple anymore, as soon as I see the boss charging close, I go for jump attacks.

theres no logic with the grapples, you can do it twice with you current life, then you lose all other grapple sttempts, losing a life resets the 2 grapple limit

I'd love to see a KotM 3 someday, but I definitely think it would be a full-on fighting game by now, so I just figure I'll play Gigabash or War of the Monsters (PS2 Classic on PS3 and PS4) and enjoy those while giving props to Atomic Guy. Speaking of, I loved Neo Geo Battle Colosseum and got WAY into it on the PS2 (never got quite as good during the XBLA HD re-release though), and never knew until now that the new characters Yuki and Ai could turn into Atomic Guy! Thanks for showing off that little tidbit! Time to fire up NGBC on my Series X and see if I can figure this whole thing out 😄

I've watched the entire Neo Geo playlist up until this point. Thanks so much for this series! I have only one complaint. The playlist is backwards. I had a lot of work in ordr to watch the videos in the right order, it worth it, but it was still a chore.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I know what you mean. Most playlists on KZbin are like that. The reason is if you leave it this way KZbin auto-sorts it each time you add a video. If you want your playlist to start from the beginning you have manually set up the order for the whole thing. I still find the playlists useful though to make sure I watch every video in a series, even if it won't auto-play in order.

Awwww yeah, Neo-Alec is back with a vengeance! I've been waiting for this one ever since I saw the first game's review. Interesting that they added beat-'em-up elements, but I likewise think this was for the best. Kind of a shame they cut the cast down to three. Kinda hardcore how they explained that the other three a) got eaten by Geon, b) their brains were used to help build Cyber Woo and c) Atomic Guy, being based on Ultraman, probably killed them. As for quarter-munching, it does seem standard for fighting games back in the day, sadly. And as with beat-'em-ups to this day, I do find that flying solo is a bigger challenge than bringing at least one friend along with. Let alone about an hour being the length to complete one. But that boss rush in practice, yikes. Still, seems like a decent enough time, and I'm glad one of the home console ports lets you play as all but the final boss. Weird side note. The death animations for Atomic Guy and especially Geon caught me off-guard. I can see Atomic's happening, but what's with Geon and that frog boss both partly melting into big mounds of goo? Is that a Godzilla reference or something? Kinda disturbing.

It wasn't meant that way. MVS carts used to be the cheapskate option. Most of the games were bought in Japan for $30 or less, there were only a select handful that cost more (maximum was about $200). I'm not responsible for today's ridiculous prices.

Hahaha, I'm with HG101 in this one, the Mega Drive version is the best because transforms it into a full fighting game like the first one: "The version for SNES, developed by Genki, is a disaster - even though you've been given the ability to block, it doesn't work well enough to make the game any fairer. Combined with poor control responsiveness, this version is nothing short of a frustrating mess, although at least it's a bit easier to win grapples. Another port was released for Genesis, with several modifications made to it, as it was ported by a different company, a small outfit called Betop. The most noteworthy changes are that the pre-boss fight sections have been removed entirely, you can select every character in the game except for Famardy, the matches are in a best-two-out-of-three format, and most of the levels have been replaced with levels from its predecessor. Grapples are also a tad easier to win, so it's a bit fairer. There are extra moves for each character, and the commands for projectiles have been changed to Street Fighter II-style controller motions - meaning that the CPU can, and will, spam projectiles like crazy. Still, with all of its changes, the Genesis port is definitely the best version of the game."

I played KotM on my genesis all the time, ugh! I'd also get jealous when kids on Nick Arcade got to play it on a cab. I never quite clicked with the second, though. I don't know why. It has everything I wanted from a sequel but maybe it was too much or something.

Avoid grappling, they often don't go in your favor. Using the specials to get the boss caught in a loop is often the fastest way, but timing the charge is crucial. The grappling bonus game against the CPU is impossible to win just by tapping, it's just not fast enough. The only guarantee is with autofire.

Nope, not a hack. That's the overscan area. It's not visible on an old CRT screen, but it's there in the original game. The game is loading in the background in separate pieces as sprites (the Neo Geo has no background layer; only sprites). You can see the same thing happening in Top Players Golf, to name just another. I choose not to crop it off in my videos, and allow the game's original nature to shine through. That footage you're looking at is from King of the Monsters 1, so go check out the KotM1 video for more of that.

Well, the title is asking what went wrong? Why's it so unfun to play? They didn't stick the landing. My answer is they got greedy gobbling arcade quarters, and unfortunately that strategy worked.
