►2019 Red Bull Straight Rhythm Tickets available now: win.gs/2019Tickets
There is nothing quite like the sound, the smell and the feel of a two-stroke dirt bike. In the modern era of racing, they may be considered “old technology” by the factory teams, but their allure to the general public has staunchly remained, with millions of ardent riders and fans considering them the only “true” dirt bike. King of the Pipes takes a look back at the heyday of the two-stroke when all-pro start gates were lined exclusively with these machines. Revisit this golden age through the stories of the “holy trinity” of pipe manufacturers, Mitch Payton of Pro Circuit, Donnie Emler Jr. of FMF and Bill Cervera of Bill’s Pipes, and prepare for the all two-stroke line-up at Red Bull Straight Rhythm.

I can still hear the sounds in my head of an all two stroke start. Sounded like an angry bee hive. And the smell is the smell of race day to everyone who ever smelled it. I remember going to an Arena Cross in '98 and hearing my first four stroke race bike, a YZ400F. Man it sounded so weird to me then.

Takes more skill to ride & race a two stroke..I started on four strokes & had a hell of a time adjusting to a two stroke. How about direct high pressure injection for emissions & allow displacement to be equal in the classes? No one would ride a thumper.
@ThomasDTY
@ThomasDTY 5 жыл бұрын
P Bau hell they could let 125s compete with 250 thumpers and it would shut down 4 strokes for good
@pbau7769
@pbau7769 5 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasDTY , a 150-175cc two stroke would probably do it. But I say fair displacement. Who the hell got the bright idea to bring in the four strokes anyways? They are expensive, heavy, overcomplicated, underpowered per CC, & their damn noise carries way worse than a two stroke.

Yeah this is when I just got into racing and 89 to 90 ish if u did not have a Honda or a Kawasaki u did not have a chance,Mitch's pipe was for racing it gave u that extra top end that stock bike had but just could not use,I was lucky enuf to inherit some one year old National bikes they was running Kawasaki at the time and getting the suspension and the whole bike dial in was pretty close to having a factory bike,it just allowed u to get away with doing things and slamming thru giant whoops that would leave other riders just scratching their heads...but two stroke just had the sound of speed...and the sweet spell of the starting line and cam 2 race fuel in the air....it would just get your heart racing.definately woke u up and made u wanna race.

And no, I will not share with you how we came up with 642cc displacement from 250cc based motor. Search your memories and recall the guy that always used masking tape for the number plates. One last hint, we were the guys that stuffed our bikes in the back of a notched out Pinto wagon.
