So, it turns out the variable player powers thing does exist, its just in an expansion i haven't played for the core game. That's cool. Anyway, King of Tokyo, what are your thoughts on what must be close to being considered a classic these days.

The expansion is called Power Up, and it's for the original version of the game, not the Dark edition, but I can't think of a reason you couldn't just use it with the Dark edition, as I think it comes with cards for all of those monsters.

@@dlarsen27 it's a me problem, but combining the previous art style with the Dark edition art style offends my sense of aesthetic. I'm hoping Iello will milk the cash cow by republishing the expansions in this art style.

Modern classic for sure. I wish they'd introduce dark editions of the expansions (and the limited dark promo monster). I'm told this version is limited so I doubt that will happen. Where it sits in my collection, I'm glad I got the dark edition and I can live without the expansions or King of New York as it's just an easy, fun game for newer gamers who aren't big into euros.

I came here to say this :-) I have, I think 20+ unique monsters for King of Tokyo, all with their own powers. They made a sequel - King of New York - which is fine, but unnecessarily complicated, but they also made an expansion for that and that gave you two sets of unique powers - one to use with the sequel and one to use with the original. Have now combined them all, along with a bunch of mini-expansions, in one box which cannot nearly fit them all :-)

Power Up is great, it took KoF from a game we liked to a game we love. I see it as the "advanced" variant, where you play a single game without powers to learn and introduce non-gamers to KoT, but never go back to play the vanilla game. Its a "classic" family game at home.

I ran a board game day at the school I teach at. KOT was a stand out hit for the kids. The simple rules and high interaction meant they could get into it easily.

KoT is one of the games our gaming group was the most inclined to Tabletop Sim during the lockdown last year. Great to see it deserving some of your love too =)

I really like the wickedness track and using the numbers to move up the track. In the original game + Power Up expansion, you would need to roll 3 hearts to get a power up card, plus the benefit of healing (if outside of Tokyo). Getting a new power plus health seemed a bit too strong for my liking, especially if players farmed for power-ups.

To me it’s a very simple family game that would probably benefit a lot from having smart icons and no text on ability cards. As it is, we sold it because our kids 8-12 can’t be bothered reading the abilities. They have no problem playing games like Roll for the Galaxy or Condottiere etc….

It’s well drawn, sure, but it’s not very colorful. I do like the Wickedness system though. All of a sudden three 1s are desirable!

I have the 1st edition and my kids like it. I've always been in the middle on this game. I'll never say no to a game but I don't generally seek it out. Great review as always.

I have base game, but expansion is not published in Ukrainian:( i think, with exp it will get to the table more often. One major con is player elemination:( Beside that it's fun to play

I think player elimination can work when the game is pretty short. And once someone goes out, normally others are pretty close to going out too. Not played a game where someone has died early and the games gone on without them for a long time, which happens in some other player elimination games

I hand the gold medals out also based on the games intent. If a game intends to be a light, easy to play fun fest, and nails that, i'm more inclined to give it a medal. King of Tokyo does what it does really well.
