The “lizard” is a salamander, which is a symbol of fire. This is because when wet logs were lit on fire in ancient times, salamanders would run out to escape the heat. The people then associated the salamanders with the fire.

Agreed. Just as undines, sylphs, and gnomes represent the spirits of the other elements....also the salamanders are eating their tails on the throne back surrounding the Lion of strength (Leo) The symbology for eternity. There is nothing lowly about the salamander.

@@missp4819 It's untrue that the salamander is just there to represent fire. If you really think it's a coincidence that the card features two different animals (both of fire), once much smaller and once much bigger then that's a shame. The size difference and comparison of 'status' of the animals is not by accident.
