Disrespected by the immigrants and by tourists, why do the guards even bother? My great grandad was a queens guard, after he fought in the first world war. My great grandmother, his wife, died at 41, he was left to bring up 6 children on his own, while he served as a queens guard. The older ones bought up the younger ones while he served in London. He did buy a projector which all the children in his home town watched using a white bed sheet as a screen. He bought them all suck (sweets) when he was home, as many neighbouring children were poor in his home town.
@User-jr7vf
@User-jr7vf Жыл бұрын
I don't want to be disrespectful to your grandfather and to the other guards, but frankly, the queens guard seem to have become more of a tourist attraction; in this video you can see a soldier that approaches him and tells him something; that soldier is apparently totally able to fight in case of need, quite the opposite of the other queens guard in that fancy uniform and with sword; they may have been actual guards in the past, but matured into a tourist attraction because everybody knows this gives a good amount of cash to the Royal family.

When you just watch the video and watch the common people, you find out, that people are so disrespectful, they are acting silly, imitating the guards walking, making grimace in front of the guard, touch them, and they even make fun of the guard. Is so embarrassing to watch some of the people, especially people from the third world how they acting disrespectfully toward the Royal guards...

Cultural gap cannot serve as defence for justifying such insensitive and crude manner of the tourists. You cannot touch a stranger, let alone a King's guard on duty for a whim.

At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing a Guard actually use his or her sword in self-defense. Maybe set an example or two and they'd be respected once again.

What makes people disrespect them is the crazy screaming. If they use a stern, clear and controlled voice people tend to take it as an order and not as a childish rant.

Sorry to show my ignorance but I am genuinely mesmerised by these fine men and women and was wondering if someone could explain why the Guards march from place to place (I understand them being on duty in the arches) amongst so many people. I know there must be a reason and I am really interested in knowing. Thank you in advance.

Well, it won't be difficult to assimilate what drives these soldiers walking from one side to the other! Those on foot are on sentry duty to the various places in the palaces and castles where they provide services. Those on horseback also provide sentry services, but in this case in the entries. Those who come to the gate and talk to the soldiers who are mounted are those in charge! As the service lasts 2 hours, the soldiers need to move around!

The palace of Whitehall is considered the outer borders of Buckingham palace..and therefore they are guarding the King. Whitehall palace is not used as a royal residence any longer. But the soldiers still stand guard and the horses are used too..obviously.! The rear of the building is Troopjng the Colour takes place each year. The " Colour" is the flag of whichever Guard Regiment ( Foot guard) is chosen that year. The soldiers on horseback are the Household Cavalry. That's all my 'knowledge" for what it's worth!!!

@@daphnethurlow5388 I'm so glad you picked up these points Daphne. I think great use of Yeoman Warders would be one means of "managing" the tourists and explaining the details of what's going on.
