Lol... The sound of a whip cracking every time you set the hook 😅 Probably an issue when you refer to setting the hook as "swinging". It should be a pull, not a swing...but damn it looks like fun!

Nice early action! Regarding the break offs and hook sets when you are using braid skein fishing for kings I found you need extra cushion somewhere. A little bit softer rod, lighter hook set, or what I do is add about 15-18in of heavy monofilament shock leader between my braid main line and my flouro leader say 20lb mono (keep your float above it on your main line). It gives you the extra stretch you need when setting the hook or for blistering runs. Or frankly you could probably run a mono leader instead of flouro. Just some thoughts from personal experience float fishing with braid. Tight lines this season and keep the videos coming!

I like setting the hook even harder than you. You’re on the right track with braid. I like to use anywhere from 50-70lb test straight to my offering. Ditch the bobber and just pinch a few heavy split shots on. You’ll figure it out eventually.. there’s definitely a learning curve and takes some guys quite a bit longer to comprehend.

Setting the hook on a large salmon is always the beginning of an ordeal. My longest fight at the salmon river this year was nearly an hour…he just kept running and running. By the end of it, both of my biceps were sore because I kept switching the rod to give my individual arms a break. Not to mention the 10+ anglers downstream who we (very politely) bulldozed over while trying to chase it. Luckily most of the guys there have a sense of humor and root for you as you go by lol

When fishing kings preparation is key. Good line and a good knot. If you have those I don't think you'll break the line on the hook set unless you try. I always tried to have the smallest less visible line I could. But over the years have learned in situations where fish especially big fish are aggressive, They will bite with a tow rope on it. I think 60-70 lb braid and a Palomar knot is what you need. Not much can compare to the KING.

Explain to me how rain gets them biting? In the PNW rain doesn’t affect the bite. River level does. Rivers on the rise after a heavy rain shuts off the bite as fish will be on the move. Rivers on the drop after it stops raining for a day or two can make salmon hold down in pools turning on the bite.
@sbsoutdooraction3055

Not 100% sure. Pretty spot on every time it starts raining here, the fish start biting. Maybe the sense of them knowing the river may rise, or just something different who know

I don’t think your leader should be breaking that easily regardless of how you set the hook. What knots are you using? Maybe try Palomar knots when you tie to swivels and other tackle. Also lubricate your knots well when tightening them. I used to have leaders and egg loop knots break all the time before doing these two things. I use 20lb Seagaur red label for my leaders. It’s very strong and flexible. Hope this helps! Great videos!

Skien bite is slow, give them time to take it in and expose the hook. Then tighten up, don't yank. You ain't bass fishing on Bill Dance Outdoors. If you have to set so hard switch to 20 pound mono, and lose the split shots that might weaken your line. Those first 4 "bites" could have been dragging bottom, or bumping the sides of fish with your bait below them. Had you pulled slow tight rather than swinging for the fences you might know.
