Nah, he’s intentionally taken advantage of his reputation a few times. Against the Monster Executives he was bluffing a bit to keep them on the back foot, for example. He’s also lured the Centipede monster to Saitama to get one punched. He definitely uses it to his advantage when he can. It also a detriment at other times. Like when he wanted to get trained so he could be strong and everyone was terrified of him.

Reason I say that is because if he had a hero's mental side, then he would always remain calm, or at the very least be able to make great calls. None of his calls are actually that great, it just works out in his favor. However, him having "hero's spirit" kinda makes sense since he constantly has those close calls, and he's constantly doing desperate things that end up working.

I think king actually does have a secret ability that Ill refer to as 'kings influence': Basically, the ability to, sometimes unintentionally, influence the events around him. Even if he isn't the one actually doing anything, his mere presence alters what happens around him to work in his favor. The biggest weakness of this ability is someone who can see past it. if someone is able to see that king cant do much on his own, they can probably overwhelm him easily, but the sheer levels of intimidation makes it hard for most people to see past it.
