Oh my god, I've been waiting for the Stephen episode for ages. Think he was the only king or queen from William I to Mary II you hadn't made an episode on (can't remember if there's a Richard III one, but every other one has been covered) and it's been an absolute joy. The run of Stuart monarchs (and Cromwell) added recently was so good. Was hoping for it the week after the Henry I one but well worth the wait. They have been absolutely fantastic to listen to. Will give them all a second listen soon.

This video is about Stephen who became King of England after the death of his uncle Henry I in 1135 - is likely interesting.. And about Mathilda, Stephen's cousin is really wonderful ,too. I am always curious to watching everything about them (Stephen and Matilda) as I have my big interests in.. I have my good wishes to know more about Henry V, the last Salian Holy Roman Emperor who was the husband of the young Mathilda who was called Empress Matilda. Thanks!!! ❤🙏🙏🙏🙏 By the way, have the nice weekend!!!

This was a fantastic, though very stream-lined version of Stephen's life. I get why you made that choice, otherwise we'd be here for hours. For those that might be interested in the nitty gritty of the politics and battles moving around the chess board might I suggest "When Christ and his Saints Slept" by Sharon Kay Penman? It is historical fiction but it is dense with how much history she includes. Anyway, hoping for one about Matilda in the near future!

Question: Stephen gets listed as an official monarch because he was an anointed king. Matilda does not because she was not anointed. But Edward V is listed as an official monarch and he was never anointed, spending.most of his reign in a tower.
@TheSilentPrince-mt5mx7 ай бұрын
Throw King Louis I (1216-17) into the mix and you realise it's occasionally a bit arbitrary. My opinion is to be acknowledged as a ruling monarch a king, or queen, has to be sole incumbent of the throne. So Edward V would be as otherwise there would be a gap between the death of Edward IV and Richard III seizing the throne. Matilda can't be Queen of England because Stephen was still King, This theory does get a bit murky when Henry VI and Edward IV were around I'll admit but I think it holds for most English monarchs from Athelstan onwards.
@MsJubjubbird7 ай бұрын
@@TheSilentPrince-mt5mx True. i also think it's about ruling the whole of England. Edward V was king of all of England. Matilda only ruled part of the country and never the capital

@cck48635 ай бұрын
Many lords changed side when Matilda arrived in England. More change side when Stephen was captured. They switched to Stephen again when Matilda lost in London and switch again when Stephen wanted to tax them. They change when Henry arrived in England and switch again when Henry was chased off . All I can say is loyalty and honor among all these Anglo-Saxon lords were worth as much as piss.

Matilda was the true heir and everyone knew it. A lot was Henry I fault by showing Stephen so much favor before his death. But Matilda was terribly un -charismatic and treated her lords badly. A bad habit the Henry VIII broke with his royal decree. Woman or not, no one would ever question the blood of Henry

Yep, many don’t realize that a lot of Westeros History is based around actual English History. William The Conquer=Aegon The Conqueror Hadrian’s Wall= The Wall The Saxons took most of England from the Britons, The Andals took most of Westeros from the First Men The Anarchy=The Dance of Dragons The Wars of The Roses=The War of The Five Kings The Black Dinner= The Red Wedding etc. Not everything is a perfect match for real History but a lot of it has some basis or inspiration.
