This skit became so huge, a record of this song hit the top 40. Can't remember how high it got, but I do know it was in the top ten on the charts. When it came on the radio, you could count on at least one person trying to dance like Steve Martin did. The laugh kept coming for months after the skit came out. I am old enough to admit watching the first airing and my sibling and I were on the floor crying tears and trying to catch a breath while watching it.

Steve had already recorded the song and asked to do it while he was hosting SNL. "In the book Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live, authors Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad write that the sketch was one of the most expensive productions the show had attempted up to that point. Martin had brought the song to the show and asked if he could perform it, not expecting the production that occurred-producer Lorne Michaels put everything behind it."

My son performed this in 2nd or 3rd grade grammar school for a talent show. It was so funny. He had a toy stand up microphone, and he ended up copying Stephen Tyler by putting it through his legs, which was over the top funny, but the rest of the performance was his cover of Steve Martin's hysterical song. I'll never forget it. He was the hit of the show. He had two friends dress up and they were the chorus. The song and Steve Martin are national treasures.

I've read that Steve Martin has vitiligo (loss of pigment); when it occurs on the scalp, the hair grows through white. My long black hair started coming in in large white streaks at only 16 (in the '60s). I didn't know anyone else with this autoimmune condition then, and as I watched, with glee, this wild and crrrazy guy live on SNL, I felt a little kinship. Did anyone happen to see Steve Martin and Martin Short on Bill Maher recently? I wish that talented pair would teach a comedy tutorial to today's comedians. They're just so innately funny, quick-witted, creative, original, and sharp while remaining kind and lovely. Comedians who can be funny without meanness or getting down in the gutter are rare. These two are multi-layered; look at Steve - comedian, musician, author, screen writer, actor and the accumulator of one of the greatest art collections. And just as he is with all of his artistic endeavours, it had nothing to do with snobbery - he just started collecting paintings that he loved, from his early days of being able to afford it, and it grew into a collection of treasures.

I'm truly sorry for both of your losses. I understand all too well what it is like to lose a dear loved one. I also know the mixed emotions that come flooding in when you encounter something that brings the pain and reminds you just how much you miss them, yet at the same time the joy in cherishing the memory and the good times you had together. Healing from the trauma of the loss never seems in reach, because living without them is far too painful, yet there is just no choice in the matter but to live. We continue on, not because we must, but because they would want us to live life to the fullest. I hope through doing that, we honor their memory, as it is what gives me strength to carry on.

* Back then the King Tut exhibit featuring the mummy and his various treasures was on display across the USA. Chicago newspaper columnist Mike Royko suggested we return the favor by putting our most famous dead "royalty" Elvis on a world tour including a display of his varoious jewelry, belt buckles, etc and instead of Elvis' actual corpse have an Elvis impersonator jump out of the coffin every hour to perform such Wlvis hits as Hound Dog or Blue Suede Shoes. I liked Royko's way of thinking. ;)

when you think about it, two of the funniest people(s) in the 70's were Steve Martin and Monty Python. Steve's material was not that funny if you read it written down on paper, but his delivery made it very funny. Monty Python's material, Spam, for instance, is funny, but they performed it deadpan. I mean, look at the Dead Parrot sketch. YMMV

Guaranteed if this old sketch never occurred, and current SNL cast were to write and perform this exact sketch with the same level of skill and style, you and all the other haters of current SNL would say it's garbage, not funny, nothing like the past, etc. And I think that goes for the vast majority of old school 70s/80s SNL sketches - you guys would all HATE them if they were made by the current SNL cast, even if performed just as skillfully.

True story. In early 1977, my senior high school class (from northern NC), took a "field trip" to DC, to see the exhibit. So, we stood in line, at 6 or 7 in the morning, on a very cold day, to see "The Boy King". Marvelous experience, esp. for a small town person. I very wisely invested my allowance money, and purchased the exhibition catalogue, which I still possess, over four decades later. A few months later, SNL presented this skit. I was over the moon! A NC person felt connected to Ancient Egypt and to SNL! I think this song was played often on the radio, at the time, because I still remember the lyrics. "And when I die, don't think that I'm a nut. Don't want no fancy funeral, just one like old King Tut." People of my age used to quote/chant the various lyrics to each other...such fun!

I still remember the first time I learned about this song from my childhood best friend as she had learned about it from either her older brother or her dad, and she _had_ to tell me about the hilarious King Tut song she discovered! I believe we were 11, and the year was 1998 and KZbin wasn't even a thing, so if we wanted to listen to the song, you'd either have to listen to someone sing it to you, or pray that someone had managed to record it on tape (or find it on one of the comedy collection DVDs or VHS tapes that was like Best of [decade] SNL" or "Best of Steve Martin SNL performances" when those were popular)! It wasn't until 2007/2008 that I decided to look up the song on early KZbin to see what I could find... and lo and behold, there was the skit and song in its entirety! I was also completely surprised to see the Blues Brothers band (the SNL band at the time) up on stage performing with Martin - with Blue Lou all dressed up as the Pharoah, as between first learning about the song at eleven and finding the skit 10 years later on KZbin, I had seen and fell in love with The Blues Brothers movie! I have been a fan of Steve Martin since I was a kid, and rewatching this skit always reminds me of what a comedic genius he is! I'm 36 now, and I still sing along and shake my tail feather when I watch it! 😂 Absolute classic! 👍🏻

There is only one Steve Martin. I saw this when it first aired on Saturday Night Live in 1978. It was one of the most funny momentsof the early years of Saturday Night Live Show.I had forgotten This clip it's been 40 years for me I was just 23 years old. Thanks Steve for given people moments to laugh in a not so perfect world.

I guess everyone has their favorites. I can't find anything funny in it whatsoever. It's just plain dumb, to put it bluntly. I guess after Nixon and Vietnam and the gasoline shortages and everything else, anything could seem funny.
