A lot of it is about pain, bravado and the reluctance to involve police. In a normal neighbourhood if someone kills your friend you just call the police but in the hood young guys have this idea that they need to handle it themselves. Where I’m from, we beef with multiple hoods because of alliances made in the early 2000s after a major killing and it’s been tit for tat since then - my age group basically inherited that beef from the older guys. But one hood we beef with is right down the street, as she said, we grew up together, all went to the same school. One day something transpired, one fight led to another, some of us started picking sides but most were still cool. Then someone almost killed one of my cousins with a brick and all bets were off after that, they cliqued up with our enemies, everyone was forced to pick a side and that beef is still going on today, and that happened in 09.
