EPMD came on the scene about same time with Strictly Biz which had its own sick beat and ofc KRS 1- But the list was small at that time so far as real bars being dropped once you got past Rakim,Krs1,Epmd,Kane and later Gangstar,Kool G Rap and few others, but much respect needs to go to LL Cool J who really took the torch from Kurtis Blow,D Fresh,Slick Rick on the solo rapper being feature.. Run DMC and Cool J had dominated everything and Whoodini made some noise too.. But Rakim and Kane along with Krs1 really brought the bars and swag into hip hop at key point in late 80"s and imo Rakim just destroyed everyone and everything him and Eric B on the tables and he did it in such a small time frame tbh

The 80s was the start. Rap had a lot to prove. Rappers had a lot to prove. But ultimately rappers just loved doing what they did. In NY they rhymed on the corner, on the stoop, in the halls, in each other's apartment and at the park. 80s and 90s rappers really came into their own. Rappers like Big L (taken from us way too soon), Masta Ace and a host of others astonished us with their lyrical gymnastics and heads like us have been hooked from day 1. Not too many carrying the torch these days. Regardless of how you feel about him, Eminem is a welcomed addition to the hip hop family. He tries to keep it in that style. But there are some unheard names out there like Celph Titled, Apathy, R.A. The Rugged Man, Vinny Paz and a host of others. Check out Vinnie Paz - No Surrender, or Cheesesteakes. You won't be disappointed

I love G. Rap, but I would bump him off for LL. He was the first solo rap superstar and the first to spit with that gangsta gruff bravado that influenced countless other rappers.. Plus, his vocabulary was impeccable. LL is easily top 2-3 of the '80s, and that's also probably where he peaked, as well, which is why he gets dismissed when people talk about goats, even though he invented the word. G Rap to me didn't start peaking until the '90s. That's when he really rose to the top. In the '80s, I would put LL, KRS, BDK, Rakim and Slick Rick all over G. Rap.
