I agree with most of the points, except the story part. In my opinion, if radzig isnt henry’s father, whole thing doesn’t make sense. And henry would die in prologue. Without you being bastard, radzig would never taken you to his personal service and also wouldnt command sir Divish to guard you on talmberk. So runt would kill you and Robart most likely isnt coming for the rescue. If you really stop and connect all the dots including the side quests. The story in my opinion is first class. Especially henry’s developing relationship with captain Bernard, hans capon, and many other characters.
@therandomdickhead5744Ай бұрын
Henry being a bastard was really well foreshadowed. Radzig even makes comments about henry’s mother 😂 So yeah to me the story makes a lot of sense in that way. If henry was just a peasant almost no one would care to help him out as much as they do.
@Imman1sАй бұрын
I don't disagree with you, but I still would prefer if he wasn't. Surviving the prologue only requires a reason for Sir Divish to send soldiers to Skalitz. And the words of Radzig said make sense as they are even if Henry was just a random lad son of a deceased acquaintance he was indebted to (as Martin told you during the attack). So sending a few soldiers to scout the area and look for Henry if they can shouldn't be big deal for Divish, specially as a gesture to Radzig. As for entering Radzig service, all that was needed is a few quests to make yourself well known before joining him. And there is no particular need to take Henry under his direct command from the very beginning anyways; he could have simply joined the city guard, have the fight with Hans in the inn, get the same punishment, save his bacon from the Cumans, become friends and get involved in the main quest as his trustworthy minion. Everything else, except Radzig rescue at the very end could remain the same without any impact to the main story whatsoever.

I'm always surprised when people say the graphics are anything less than great. It will look worse when it's overcast/cloudy in game, but so does real life. First of all. Amazing video! I was flabbergasted when I found out that you have so little subscribers and love the fact that KZbin actually suggested this video on my feed. For a first video this was such a banger! The production quality was insane! SPOILER I would disagree with just one point and that about Radzig being Henry's father. There were many strong hints throughout the story and without this it would feel quite unrealistic how Henry got up through the ranks. Even Radzig accepting you into his service was kind of weird if you think about it. Hans summarized it pretty well. Any other peasant would get thrown out maybe even with a whipping. And how he asked about you and cared about you when you were at Talmberg or when you escaped Skalitz... It would be quite unrealistic that a lord would care and give such a leeway to a normal teenage peasant. So in my opinion it makes Henry's progression, which was necessary for the game to be enjoyable, much more realistic and it doesn't feel like it just had to be there for the game to work. Nobody would enjoy a game where Radzig throws you out of the castle and you have to beg on the town square or slave in Peshek's mill. Also it sets Henry up much better for the second game when you will be a much stronger player in a larger conflict and it will make it more believable for Henry to be playing more important role as a bastard of a noble rather then a peasant out of nowhere. First game a peasant, second game a knight. But you couldn't realistically become a knight as a peasant so they had to somehow make you not a peasant anymore and that was done in my opinion in the best and the most believable way possible.
@BerendirАй бұрын
Wow, 1. I really appreciate your comment! I’m so glad you liked the video, it’s kinda crazy how many people have seen it I had no idea this would happen haha! 2. Honestly after I finished the video and thought about it more, I agree with you. Thinking to the moment when Radzig accepts Henry into his service it really would make 0 sense for him to do that for Henry without an ulterior motive. The longer I thought about it the more I thought the real thing that rubbed me wrong was Henry’s reaction to the news. I think it would have sat better if Henry really had an internal struggle over the news, dealing with the anger and emotions that would come from that. But yeah I definitely agree with you that it actually works a lot better in than story than not.
@negron60Ай бұрын
@@Berendir I see your point but consider this. There was no time for the struggle to manifest itself. At first Henry was basically in shock, probably not even sure if Izkvan was telling the truth. Then comes a whirlwind of events and Radzig gets captured. The first chance they get to talk he asks Radzig; 'Where is the honor in abandoning your son?'. So we do get that internal struggle, just delayed by happenstance.
@alexanderwilliamson1077Ай бұрын
@Berendir yeah I agree with your statement on Henry. Throughout the game Henry is treated suspiciously well by the nobles and then learns the truth of his parentage. It would have been nice to see him struggle to learn that his true dad(Radzig) never treated him like a father should and seemed ashamed at his existence(not acknowledging his existence as a son.) For once in the game, the usually rash immature Henry is understanding, at sometging that is truly horrible, as opposed to all the other times he didn't stay calm throughout the game. He should have reacted more to the way you would normally react if you learned you were actually a mistake and your whole life your father never told you the truth.

One of the good things about this recent franchise is that there is a lot of room for improvement. I say this because the developer shows an interest in improving its own product, unlike other companies that are more interested in investing in microtransactions (among other "creative" ways to monetize the game collaterally), deceiving a consolidated fanbase, intentionally investing in something mediocre by selling the idea of a masterpiece etc. Some personal expectations: 1) a greater variety of clothes, equipment, objects etc. More options for equipping and decorating the mount. Customization options for certain items at specialized blacksmiths - such as shield emblems or the melee weapon hilt - would be excellent. 2) more interesting quests with depth that value free will (and creativity or personal commitment). 3) more differentiated dialogue interactions with "common" and "unique" NPCs. Less standardization when talking to the general population. 4) greater dynamism and possible conclusion (possibly marriage) of Henry's (chosen) romantic relationship. 5) greater diversity of "faces" and "voices" used. There was considerable repetition in the first game. 6) greater presence of useful and balanced perks in character development. Create relevant perks for long range weapons. 7) option to buy or acquire your own house and be able to decorate it, furnish it, renovate it etc. Henry could live there with his wife. 8) more unpredictable stories that contain personality. Avoid quests that force me to make long repetitive journeys in their stages WITHOUT a good justification for it. 9) more quests, decisions or dialogues that have a visible impact on the plot, on daily life and/or between the parties involved. It may seem silly, but it is interesting for the player - or punishing depending on the case - to observe the "effects" and consequences of their direct or indirect participation in the game. This goes beyond rewards or loot. 10) More frequent presence of specific player choices in special cases. For example, when given the chance to financially help a woman who is being sought by vile men, Henry could either trick her into receiving a reward for her capture or donate a large sum of money to make her find refuge in a safe and distant location.

Just FYI, Dan Vávra left 2K Czech after his design for Mafia 3 (not 2, which was already out in 2010) was rejected after years of work. It was supposed to be set around Kennedy assassination and player was supposed to play both a mafia guy, and a detective who investigates him. But then Vávra left and co-founded Warhorse (after looking for investor for 18 months and running out of savings, but they did find investor who let them create the prototype shown during kickstarter) while 2K Czech got renamed to Hangar 13 and made Mafia 3, with development led by americans Haden Blackman and Bill Harms. While M3 was flawed, I still enjoyed it a lot once it was patched up, but I would love to see the original Vávra design made too.

The perks are supposed to define your playstyle. Some are just generally good, but most have a positive and a negative so that you can specialise in a particular way to play the game. I'm also hesitant to give myself a weakness, but it makes you really think about what you want to do, so I do think it's good. Regarding story, I think it's realistic that Henry was traumatised by and obsessed with Runt, while Runt doesn't even remember Henry, and it's the same for Markvart von Aulitz. Istvan Toth having heard of Henry being a bastard is a little strange, but if he did hear about it, it would make sense that he'd remember Henry while Henry doesn't remember him (just like the player). The reason the betrayal could have only worked this way was because he was supposed to go back to Hungary to petition the lords for Radzig, him being in Bohemia meant that the Hungarian lords never heard Radzig's petition, and that's why nobody else is getting involved, because nobody knows there's anything going on, which creates a bit of a mystery throughout the game that is only solved when you see Istvan being the traitor.

I like watching opinion videos on KCD, getting new perspective. And one thing that I always wonder about is the ranting about production quality of the story - I look at KCD's cutscenes and I am stunned by the quality and cinematography, which other RPGs just are nowhere close to these (notably Skyrim, Fallout, Dragon Age, Dragons Dogma,...) and are way more inline with Rockstar Games cutscenes or more linear adventures like Mass Effect. I just dont get where you pull those comparisons, is it because of the facial animations or lighting? Because the artistic cinematography of KCD is really excelent.
@BerendirАй бұрын
I think it’s important to put KCD in the context of its release year. 2018 saw Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassins Creed Odyssey and God of War (2018) release in the “rpg” space, so while yes I agree whole heartedly with you that the cutscene and cinematography are great compared to those older titles, and I think they did an incredible job with the resources they had, the criticisms, unfair as they are, simply come from the comparisons to other popular games that released that year.
@Bolzmann13Ай бұрын
I’d say the transitions between the cinematics are a bit jarring. I remember the cutscene where you’re ambushed by a mill with dramatic music, then it fades to black and you’re taken to the gameplay which starts with a dialogue. There’s some awkward silence followed by the stiff dialodue system which contrasts with the cinematic’s vibe. Compare this with the fluidity of God of War, Last of Us and Spider-man. I love KCD but I don’t think the cinematics are its strong suit

33:15 I hope the improve the combat when fighting multiple enemies at the same time. Fighting multiple enemies REALLY sucks compared to something like Souls game. Personally it is not fun at all fighting more than one opponent. The only way I can think of is let you bring a companion with you. Yeah, I get it'll make fights easier but having a companion with you is an OPTION. Another issue I noticed (and you pointed out in the video 31:25) is that for some reason sometimes your opponent just always counters the entire fight, just auto parry everything you do, and never attack. It forces you to only perfect block and master strike is the only way to win. Also yes I typed out the comment before listening/watching the whole video.

Great review. I prefer the save systems like this, because if there is a save system, I will always take the "easiest route". Like in BG3 just savescumming so hard on every single roll check and never having the beautiful chaos that comes from not being able to save scum as easily. I think there is something beautiful about not being able to control everything and having to roll with the chaos of uncertainty, instead of getting the "win" every time. Because you can break kingdom come pretty easily with save scumming and stealing 1 million groschen in an hour and every time you get caught you can instantly load. Only annoying part is if you lose progress from the crash and forgetting to save, although in most games you can forget to save too. Most questionable choice in my opinion is the slow mo in combat and master strike from you and mobs. They'll remove both of those in the sequel, but I'd recommend anyone to get "no mo slowmo" mod and removing masterstrikes mod. There are other combat mods that make it so much more interesting and challenging.

It’s a mid game but I like it, combat in the game is overrated it’s not hard despite the fans screaming “skill issue” it’s just different but that doesn’t make it good. Master strike ruins combat for player and enemies. It’s not that combat is hard it’s just that the player skill isn’t relevant until Henry gets stronger. Group combat is annoying but isnt hard. The game isn’t built for group fights and switching enemies is awful. Group fights being hard shouldn’t impair my vision, each time another enemy hit you, your focus is now on them and which also makes running away awful. Game is still buggy to this day, biggest bug I faced was the game being unable to load a save taking me back two saves and losing 3-4 hrs of gameplay before dropping it. The graphics are ok but the art direction and immersion makes up for it. Characters faces when talking is weird. Locking picking is awful (console player). Henry is just too awful at everything lol. But that helps with zero to hero aspect of the game. Lacks customization hair and body wise. Needing skills to use a dagger is a bit silly. Upgrading your herbalism is tedious with a 3 sec cutscene each time you pick something up. Lack of unique skills for weapon of choice, only combos and most the time you won’t be able to finish. Some skills I didn’t bother with cus I didn’t want the negatives. Needs training with the bow same as other weapons vs just shooting animals. Some of the worse fans, they cheese the game without knowing it. If you want to feel immersed don’t spend 3-4 hrs practicing swordplay. Practice a lil, play and explore a lil and repeat. The tourney is better anyways for exp. Weapons are used correctly, swords are a side arms by this time and maces and other blunt weapons were used first or instead. Why can random peasants master strike and fuck the dogs lol. Fast travel is ok, it’s a game design to help with immerse so I wouldn’t complain about too much, it’s just isn’t my preferred way. The save system would be better if the game wasn’t so buggy, also idk if it’s always been around but there is a save & exit which is fine. It’s really a okish game that does certain things really well. To me bugs and other things that inhibits me from playing always lower my score of game.

Now that i think about it all of the game i've most enjoyed in recent years have come out of eastern europe, witcher 3, KCD, cyberpunk 2077 & ultimate admirals deadnaughts. Its like the west has forgotten how to make engaging games.

I don't agree with the point about the twist of being a bastard. The story couldn't happen without it. Hanuš defended you from the priest bad mouthing you only because everybody around you knew that you're a bastard. Serf could never become a squire. I also don't believe it's really a twist. Your parents talk about you having a blue blood, behind your back, in the first five minutes. Then the interaction of the lord with your father and you kind of gives it away. Maybe this is a cultural thing, being moravian myself. But also he calls you his son, again behind your back again, before the half mark of the main story quest. But overall I like your video and will subscribe to see more

@@Berendir One last thing I remembered, you talked a lot about immersion, everything centered on it, but you didn't follow that when riding a horse and brought the wrath of the universe upon yourself. I'm not very knowledgable about this, but I don't think you can ride a horse through a forest at full speed if you don't have a death wish. And riding through a town, let's hope the people around are willing to die. Truth be told, the npcs are not very reactive to a horse stampeding towards them, but it's not something that you'd do. With a horse, you gotta stick to roads and paths, or take it slow. It took me about 20-30 hours from when I started playing, to find out that you can be knocked out of your horse by the scenery. Then in the span of 5 more hours I got hit by a corner of a house and learned a lesson to avoid those. And once I was knocked down, out of nowhere, by what I believe is a bug, funnily enough in the exact same spot you got knocked off in your video. Those are the only times it happened to me in my playthrough, and it was mostly thanks to my immersion that made me wanna roleplay a bit. Following the paths also avoids getting stuck in bushes, that happens only when you get distracted. Horses are not that different from cars, it's generally faster to get from A to B if you follow the road

I just want to thank you Today it's hard to find a relatively fair and unbiased critique of the games. And you nailed it well. I really enjoying listen to such videos, especially for such *absolutely unfairly* overlooked and wonderful games like KCD. Love the vid! Hard disagree on the horses. I hate getting knocked down but horse riding is a lot of fun! Also I love the save system! Quick saving ruins so much for me since it essentially removes all risk from games. Kcd save system causes me to forget about saving and adds cost to it, so a dumb mistake can cost me. Last night I love probly 15 mins of playing bc I attacked a bandit camp and got mauled. I was angry but you bet I went back to that same camp later and ravaged it out of revenge. Fantastic!

I would LOVE to play this game. I really would. Unfortunately, their "immersion at all costs" philosophy - like CDPR with Cyberpunk 2077 - I'll never be able to BE immersed, because their idea of "immersion" means a perspective that will make me severely ill for days after attempting to play for ten minutes. The fascination with first person in RPG's drives me freaking spare, because A) it's NOT realistic. Look down at your front while moving around the world, a pair of clunky disembodied forearms is NOT what you see! B) it's a combat style that is well and truly proven to trigger a bunch of debilitating medical conditions like chronic migraine, motion sickness, epilepsy and syncope. It's truly bizarre to me that devs will sacrifice a huge portion of very eager paying customers for this incredibly subjective definition of "immersion". It's such a shame, because I'd LOVE to play it. I really want to. I just can't 😞
@Berendir2 күн бұрын
I’ve never struggled with any motion sickness or problems with first person perspective games but I really feel for you and people who struggle with it. I think for accessibility AAA studios with their massive budgets and workforces should have third person camera angle availability in every first person game. I doubt that would ever happen but it is sad there is a portion of the community that will just never get to experience some of these games.

@@Berendir Yeah it's a pain in the backside. I think I"d be less salty about it if they'd stop insisting it's for "the sake of full immersion" which is total BS. It's a design choice. It's more often than not a cost thing! It's cheaper and easier to just let the "camera" run around the world and add in some forearms. I just wish they'd be honest with everyone (including themselves!). Despite that, I'm happy they managed to make their dream game a success. It's a brilliant game, and I'm very lucky in that I get migraines when I *play* FPS (as opposed to watching it), so I can watch full playrthroughs and see it vicariously 😅 It's incredibly historically accurate for a video game, and I think studios like Ubisoft (looking at you Assassin's Creed Shadows!). Bow not a viable playstyle? Hopefully more viable in KDC 2? Huh... I'm currently on my fourth playthrough overall and first in hardcore mode. I have a hard time forcing myself to use anything BUT the bow since it's so brutally OP. You can take out one or two enemies while they approach ans then just backpaddle and keep shooting them. Since they stagger on hit you can manage your distance surprisingly well (and unrealistically so). Interesting how much experiences vary.

@@Berendir Since you are here, I want to tell you that you absolutely succeeded in your goal of giving a balanced review. I love this game so much that I often overlook how undercooked many of the main quests are and how anticlimactic and disappointing the ending was on the first playthrough. I was fully confused about the big reveal, because by that time I had completely forgotten who Istvan Toth was or why I was supposed to know him. Once we decide that we like a game enough to replay it, it's easy to forget the aspects that were really off-putting the first time around, because during replaying it, you just accept the things that were irritating the first time and learn to work around them.

Hating the horses is a skill issue if I'm being 100% honest 😂😂😂😂 it's really not bad. If you're using a controller, the handling is going to be more annoying but it's so easy to control for me on PC. If you're going thru a million bushes then that's all on you. Yes the bushes suck at times but just minimize the time you're doing that? Running into buildings and getting knocked off is a thing but out of my last 60 hours, it has happened no more than 4 times. It's kind of funny to me tbh rather than annoying lol. TL;DR: It really sounds like you're just failing to control your horse well, while many other players don't have that issue. Just not a strong point tbh.

i may add more onto this comment as i watch the video but first of all i want to mention that hardcore mode isn't just "hard" difficulty on a game, it's intended for someone that is already familiar with the game and that's why in your playtrough the difficulty curvve is very "steep" and also, there is autosaves just not in hardcore :> they save every side mission or every main mission so just an FYI but so far i'm enjoying the video :D Masterstrikes i reaslised only on my second playtrough how it kinda neglects all of the combat and makes it completelly irrelevant but... with the perks being useless? there may not be a lot of them but a lot of them seem to be really unique in my eyes and some really awfully specific ones being a game changers like how you slowly get better at hunting so you can harvest pelts or antlers from animals, when picckpocketing you can even decrease how much time you need to wait till you lose the bounty and how less people recognise you if you commited a crime. The one that you showed as an example i think every tailor has a wife that you could trade with, same with every in having a barmaid, and the horse seller at neuhof all sell really good stuff and that charisma influences quite a bit on how much you can increase/deccrease the price when hagling. And with this point i feel like it makes you chose of what you prefer more because otherwise it could be really unbalanced, and i personally really like that. (also there is a potion that resets all perks so it's not permanent) And i know i wrote all of that but i feel like it's more of the lack of perks moreso than the quallity of them but then again i feel like they were trying to go for uniqueness and to justify how would they fit into henry leveling up at a certain skill and what kind of realistic trait he could get. ik the comment is kinda negative but i still really enjoyed the video, made me understand other aspects of kcd that people enjoy and dislike and made me reflect on my experience of it so good job :D also the way you segmented the video felt really nice and cohesive so good job on it!
