I'm honestly mixed. As a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, I didn't like the Port Royal censorships, and I'm pleased with the restoration of Axel's fire thing as well, but I actually find myself preferring the dark smoke for the Hydra, as well as Xigbar's NA targeting sight (in part because I can still see the whole arena in it). As for the cases of Daisy's beef with Donald, as well as Kairi's... _(ahem)_ assets, I have no opinion on those matters, though I will say: for Kairi, that kind of thing should've been for Sora's eyes only.

My understanding was it wasn't so much that Disney had an aversion to guns and the like, it was a business decision to change enough to target specific ESRB, PEGI, and ACB ratings. Here in the states, the ESRB had introduced E 10+ in 2005 as a rating to be closer in alignment to other rating systems as far as the quantity of age ranges go, so it made sense to target that rating (as a T rating could have potentially resulted in lower sales). That falls in line with the PEGI 12 and ACB PG (and the CERO rating board in Japan tends to be a smidge more lenient on specific kinds of content from the get-go). Still stupid, though. That being said, this mod looks fantastic! I'm really curious how it works - does it simply contain the original version's assets or are they still found in the international release but modified to go unused (and the patch just re-enables them)?

I'd imagine things like that are usually put in place as a fail safe for situations where certain positions or angles happen to make it look more natural than a void. But of course everyone brought attention to it and made it a big deal so they ended up just erasing it. Ironically there's a lesser known (from what I've seen anyway) instance of the same thing in KH1. To be honest I don't recall if they removed that one for the HD port but I think they did. In fact there might even be other ways to see, but KH1's camera isn't as easy to manipulate, especially in the original PS2 version where you couldn't even move it up and down.

I have yet to see a mod I absolutely want which is "Re:Translate". Going back to KH1, CoM, KH2, BBS, DDD, and KH3 to replace all the text dialogue with proper English translations that Nomura intended. Things like Rikus "protect my precious person" in KH3 being changed to "protect what matters" in English for example. There are translation issues all over KH that I would love to see corrected with a mod.

Tbh I'm kinda ok with most of the changes. Like I could take either the dark mist or the green blood on hydra, though I guess the green is truer to the movie. I feel like people really play up the Will cutscene as dumb without him pointing the gun at himself, but I think the implication is still pretty clear, and even without the gun the threat still works in the sense that he could just jump overboard. I honestly prefer the 'censored' Donald/Daisy thing, the original just kinda looks weird to me, not funny weird in the Disney slapstick sense, just a little off. I like the 'censored' one where Daisy is about to give him a mean right hook more. And I like the NA crosshairs for Xigbars arrowguns, though I would kinda like the text overlay from the original. I do prefer the original Axel scene , smidge more, and yeah the jack sword thing is kinda dumb. Again the implication is still there and you can just assume he was stabbed and sword pulled so it still works, but it doesn't ring as smooth as the Will thing to me. Don't really care one way or the other on the Kairi thing, though I don't think the void they went with is much better tbh. I wonder if the gun thing is based on the type of gun or the amount of them on screen at once. Cause in KH1 Clayton deadass has a shotgun, and in KH2 Jack and Will's pistols are uncensored too. Maybe they just don't like rifle-type weapons for age-rating reasons, or maybe it's a matter of they're being a lot of guns at once firing on a teenager if you fighting a mob of them.

Interestingly, the startup animation for Xigbar's reaction command is slightly different, in the international he just kneels down and aims at you with a single arrowgun where as in the original version he locks the two guns together into rifle mode first...guess they didn't want what was essentially a sniper rifle pointed at a child?

About the Hydra's Blood and Xigbar, The Hydra's Blood was only on the Original Japanese Release of Vanilla KH2, and even in Japanese PS2 Final Mix it had the censored black smoke, and Xigbar had another change made on the Release of Vanilla KH2, which he didn't form the guns together into the Rifle, but somehow, this change was not added back in since the PS3 release

A few fun facts: 1. The Hydra's green blood is only present in the Japanese Vanilla version of KH2. It has been replaced with black smoke in every following release, including KH2 final mix in Japan. 2. About Xigbar's sniper scope. Actually, it's more about Braig's scope in BbS. Same scenario, uncensored in (true/jp) vanilla BbS, censored in every other release, including FM on PSP, PS3 or PS4.

What is extra stupid about the hydra blood censorship is that one of the most common and easiest ways of censoring blood in any form of media is to change its color to anything but red. In the re-released versions of Ocarina of Time, a game which is also rated E, the devs didn't change all instances of blood into smoke or just outright remove it they just changed its color from red to green.

For the last change, I mean... you can bet that if a game allows you to move the camera around, and if there are characters with skirts or certain shirt types..... ppl gonna try their best to see. Makes for some funny achievements on some games, or embarrassing deaths in the case of NieR. I think another option could've been to just prevent the camera from having certain angles in that specific area where Kairi's model is present, or just given her spats underneath, which (while maybe not color coordinated with her outfit) would have been more plausible, considering her outfit is rather short in the first place.

Why does Disney censor textures and models that are directly references to things… they already did? Will’s threat of suicide, the sword in Jack, the Hydra blood, all of this is… already in each of their films Who the hell is in charge of VGA censorship over at disney?

I think we should look less at Disney... and more at the ratings boards. They've always been finicky at what's allowed or not.

@@ultimaweaponxiii That was the same MPAA that gave a G for The Hunchback of Notre Dame, despite it being decidedly NOT a good fit for it. And besides, what the MPA might have seen as passable might not be for the ESRB, let alone other ratings boards elsewhere like CERO.

I may remember wrong as a weird Mandela Effect, but the Hydra does spill green blood when Hercules cuts the heads in the original movie, so I don't understand why the Hydra blood had to be censored when DISNEY animated that in the first place. Again, I could be wrong, I haven't seen the movie in a while.

Fun fact I guess: The part in Disney castle with daisy hitting Donald's butt was only in the original Japanese ps2 version. In the Japanese final mix version on ps2 it's still censored. The ps2 final mix was more based on the original western release rather than the Japanese one.

The reason at the time wasn't for avoiding cancelling, Kingdom hearts 2 is an old game, the reason at the time was avoiding higher market PG ratings, and they have to avoid putting some of the content as to not be flagged into mature +18 content, I'm sure Disney also wanted the game to be friendly to kids since their brand is that market precisely, along with that it was also the fact that lower PG would allow better sells (to a broader public) and as business they tend to want to maximice profit, so it was a win, win, from both Square enix and Disney. Nowadays if a game would to be censored it would be for a different reason, which is cancel culture that could potentially do more harm money/looks wise than PG ratings, it's a different time now.

I think it would be cool and it would make sense if they made the games be T for Teens, imho. Because most Disney movies are PG-13, have guns, kissing, and stuff. Especially if they want to add Star Wars or Marvel stuff into the mix now too. So i don't see the big deal tbh. Also they can still keep the very child friendly feel of KH but without censoring these things, and possibly adding things they didn't want to add before because of the rating maybe. Without crossing the line like adding blood or something ofc, unless it's green goop looking blood which is actually fine imo. I think it would be perfectly fine. Or y'know if none of these censored things make the game T for Teen on its own then you know they can keep it in, and keep it E for Everyone 10+ or the ESRB should come up with a new classification, like 12+ which would be a step above 10+ but not T for Teen yet.

Just deleted my old post. Just wanted to say that this video has a lot of good points, mainly the Pirates of the Caribbean world, because while the Pirates franchise is by Disney, it's also a PG-13 film series, while Kingdom Hearts series by Disney and Square Enix is a family game. Changing Will's threat for example, I can understand because Disney wouldn't allow that in Disney games where a characters puts a gun to their heads. I can also accept Jack's Stabbed by Barbossa changed because impaleing a character in a Disney game is not right, and the range pirates wielding guns changing to wielding cross bows in international is that I can accept it as well.
