Kingdom Hearts and Eight Crazy Nights connection.

Little bit of backstory on the Kingdom Hearts pilot I directed nearly 20 years ago. How did I end up doing it? What happened to it? Where has it been this whole time?
I have nothing to do with any current Kingdom Hearts anything. This is a development project from 20 years ago right after the game came out.

I promise you no matter what, at least a majority of the KH community are gonna love what you show us, Seth! Your pilot is KH history and lost media, which is always a very facinating subject. Side note, as a hardcore KH fan, I like that you wanted to go more in depth with why Riku did what he did. The games sort of go over it, but it's mostly a gloss over thing and most of it happens here or there, and it doesn't entirely explain why he chose darkness in the first place, mostly why he continued to go down that path. For instance, partway through KH1 when he meets with Sora again, he thinks Soras new friends Donald and Goofy replaced him. Maleficent really plants into his mind. My take is that as the slightly older and more edgy/moody teen than Sora, he's more likely to let those emotions creep into his heart than Sora would, but that's really the most I can get out of what has been established in the series. It is facinating that you really wanted to dive deep and explore more there. Last thing I want to say: it is a breath of fresh air to see that there was someone so passionate about a project like this "way back then" (I was born in Jan 2000, so for me that was my entire lifetime). As saw with the original script, I feel like most other people would have been fine with what was already on the papers, and probably wouldn't have even bothered touching the game, but you really wanted to give this show what it deserved, and I really appreciate that.

He is 15 in kh 1. The reason for glossovers is Nomura wantet a game whèr players can imagine themself certain Things. Its later in recided wher we find out Ansem has Manipulation riku for a while

It's sad that this didn't go anywhere as it's pretty clear you had a lot of passion for it and actually took the time to understand the "Kingdom Hearts" elements and not the "Disney cartoon guest starring KH characters". That is a shame about your accident but I'm glad you're still here and able to share this with everyone. Hopefully other creators who worked on lost media, not even specifically Kingdom Hearts related but just any projects never released or re-released, hear of this and perhaps take the initiative to get some of this lost content out there before any major accidents happen that potentially they might not be so lucky to get out of. I'm really looking forward to seeing what was made once the VHS is converted. It's really exciting to see a "what if" for the franchise. Kingdom Hearts is MASSIVE now and to see stuff like this from 20 years ago back when the first game was still fresh and the future could go anywhere is really interesting.

First of all, your story about the car crash really makes me think about all of the cool art that never got its chance to be seen because of unfortunate circumstances like creators dying, or the work itself getting destroyed. It really makes me appreciate any lost media that gets to see the light of day. Secondly, after seeing the Kingdom Hearts pilot, I'm sure that if it had a full season it would absolutely be one of those shows that my generation just never shuts up about. If Disney ever makes a Kingdom Hearts series, I hope the team working on it puts as much thought and care as you put into your animatic.

You were so on the ball, Kingdom Hearts was huge in my school when KH2 came out 11 of us in my friendship group went out to get it day 1 together and then we tracked who had finished it to lend it the people who couldnt afford a copy so that they could play it too, it was wild. We constantly bemoaned the lack of a KH TV show because it felt like such an obvious route for the franchise to follow, its a massive disney crossover, the demand for crossovers has always been there its why the games also did incredibly well all these years. Just watched the pilot and loved it, i wouldve been all over that as a kid to know it came this close is heart breaking but well done on taking it as far as you did!

I won’t lie and say that the whole revealing of a pilot was a shock to see as soon as I woke up. You did a fantastic and astounding job on it and I love the old-school hand-drawn style, plus the little additions you include such as Kairi straight-up kicking a Heartless (which is more than what she ever did in the games, especially 3) I also felt that Square Enix could have learned from this and included Riku in more scenes, such as the Agrabah part having him show more to his descent into darkness, by spying Goofy as Sora’s new partner and the lamp making him say such stuff. Also, the moment where Maleficent one-ups Jafar and YEETS him out of her room is the best thing I’ve ever seen in all of 2022. Bless you for making this work of art. I hope more KH fans would eventually see this before Square Enix decides to witch hunt and take it off, like how Sony acted when their animatic Popeye movie was leaked.

Just saw the pilot. It was awesome and hit me with all kinds of nostalgia waves, from the VHS quality of the recording to the pacing of those classic 90's Disney cartoons. Its always been baffling to me that KH never had an animated series. This seemed like a great direction to go in. Don't let the haters/people who don't understand how things are made bring you down. I didn't even know this pilot existed until I watched a lost media iceberg video a little while back, and it really stung to know we came so close to something I've wanted for years. Seeing you come back with this and still show so much passion for such an old project gives me hope that maybe Disney actually will listen and do SOMETHING with this series. I also really like your idea of actually showing the Heartless attacking Destiny Islands. To date we've really only seen a handful of instances of average people encountering the Heartless, so I'm interested to see your take on it. And as a final note, you shouldn't worry too much about the reaction. We KH fans have put up with some preeeetty out there stuff, most of us will be happy just to see something like this see the light of day. I personally just see this as someone else's take on a franchise I hold dear to my heart, much like the manga. For God's sake, the manga has some of the villains eating KFC, I'm sure most of us can handle whatever you throw at us.

Thank you so much for putting the animatic out there. Your work is basically part of the series’ history, and now we all get to see it. There are some things I don’t quite agree with (even besides the drawings), but you still got a lot of things right about the characters, their relationships, and how that’s what the story is really about. It’s no wonder it tested well. It is weird that they didn’t pick up the show then, even if there would be more games. It would have been interesting to see how you’d handle the Nobodies.

Honestly to know that Disney had considered doing a cartoon back in the mid 2000s when cartoons like Kim Possible, American Dragon and The Proud Family (who actually referenced Kingdom Hearts in the Disney+ reboot funnily enough) is wild to me. And the fact that you still had the storyboards from years ago is pretty neat. I honestly wonder what the final show would look like because I know that usually the storyboards and final animation look different. Would it have more of an anime influence? Would they have gotten some animators from Japan to help with the animation? All those sorts of questions definitely float in my head because I’m aware of how often certain things can change in the process of making animation. But either way I think it’s awesome that you still have the pilot after all these years. Heck I’d be happy to see you play the games in the series especially Kingdom Hearts 2 and Birth By Sleep. Because I’d definitely think you’d enjoy the story in the later games.

Thank you so much for putting this out into the world. It's obviously a wonderful time capsule that my preservationist heart appreciates. But more than that, it's a vision of an alternate future that we could have had. I watched it and saw antecedents to some of the best children's television we've had in the last 20 years, from Avatar the Last Airbender to Steven Universe. The writing has flashes of such brilliance that this show feels like it could have beaten them to the punch. It's all of our losses that it never got picked up. Best of luck with your health!

I'm glad you're gonna put it out & that you're interested in the series & a chance to pick the TV series back up! I hope you're able to do so ^^b I already figured your drawings weren't nearly the final but it's interesting to see them in other styles! Something to note tho is that until KH is complete, we don't kno what's fully going on. Things constantly get changed cuz it turns out every character is an unreliable narrator whether they refuse to give the correct info or they just don't kno the correct info ;w; Nomura can be overwhelming that way but it keeps it exciting! If it's too difficult to play the games, the novel is 2nd tier canon & is usually about over 95% accurate to the game. Mostly just depends on when in the story they arrive to each Disney world. Oh, & there is an awesome KHtuber here that does literary analysis for the series! Constructing Kingdoms if you're interested. He brings up the interviews with Nomura & the team a lot so it's a great place to check out ^^b My apologies if I said too much but I'm super excited about the pilot presentation! Now that I kno more info on it, I really like what I've seen so far!

Thank you for this video, it's interesting to hear about the KH Pilot. I've heard that Disney is interested in doing a series about KH when Disney+ came out but those are just speculation and rumors. Sorry to hear about the car accident thank, God you made it out alive.

This is super cool! I’m sorry about the almost death thing. Post watching the story board, overall it was good, I have complaints about directions of some characters, like riku essentially being maleficents bitch, instead of a he uses her, she uses him relationship. But decent characterization and dialogue , better than kingdom hearts itself and I said this on the actual video but with some proper course correction, you really had something here. With the context of 2001 or whenever this was gonna happen, there are much less issues, but with the games having evolved so much, this project would have to evolve with it to kill it today. But the potential is absolutely there and I’m happy to hear someone invested into the universe was trying to make something happen.

I’d also like to give props, for attempting to create these cool looking fight scenes, but then also having funny slapstick moments like the goofy fighting heartless thing. Very fun.

@@SethKearsley Yea that’s fair! You did a great job with those 11 mins. in this video I especially appreciate the part where you needed to rewrite the script to focus kingdom hearts characters instead of any given Disney world’s cast with kingdom hearts riding along.

I'm happy to see how passionate you are about the project. If you ever get the chance to try it again in the future I would totally watch. It might be worth considering an original story that follows a different group of keyblade wielders

Oh man, I hate that this didn’t work out. The pilot was fun, and I’d love to have been able to see how you’d interpret the rest of the series. And don’t let anyone knock the art! I know you said it’s rough, since it’s just the storyboard, but the style has a lot of charm to it.

As a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, it's saddening that they decided not to pick this up as a series, I would have LOVED watching a full blown KH animated series on tv! No matter what we will love it. Any gatekeeping or visceral hatred doesn't come from a fan. Even if it isn't enjoyed by many, it will be enjoyed regardless. It'll be an amazing experience for fans to see another take on the original. That may even kick into production a new one that I hope you get to work on and get to put more amazing things into the world. I've loved the game for 20 years now and regardless, it's a part of the history and will definitely enjoy seeing that history too.
