VNs can't survive without freedom of expression, RPGs too.

cast a spell that makes terra aim his keyblade up (thunder) and you can hit stickers with normal jump that would require high jump :P. same with fire surge in the air to get to chests that would've required air slide

Why is it so illegal for some people to have villain simply be evil? Why do they always have to have a sad backstory and make you feel bad for them? WHY CAN’T PEOPLE JUST BE EVIL FOR THE SAKE OF BEING EVIL?! I like sympathetic villains too but not every person deserves redemption

What frustrates me about the Frieren demons is how empty they feel as characters. Their drive seems tautologous, where they do evil simply because they are evil, rather than having evil motivations. It's the inverse problem I see with a character like Rey, who simply does good because she is good. Some of the later demons are a little more compelling as characters, but we never get any real reason why they kill humans. Not even the base sadism or hunger we get from the Demon Slayer demons, or viewing humans as vermin to be exterminated like the ones in Overlord.

Demons are monsters though, they are supposed to be empty. They are nothing more then wild beasts that have only evolved in ways that resemble humanity to prey on our own empathy, they're interesting from an creature standpoint in the way they hunt humans and not meant to be interesting on the individual level. It's fine to not really have an interest in that but I don't think it's a valid critique to say "they should be dimensional" because that actually breaks they're narrative purpose and doesn't engage the story on its own terms. Pure evil beings are cool I think.

@@DimitriMonroe this is actually what I love about demons in frieren! There's a lot of animals/beasts in other pieces of media that mimic human speech, calling out, "help me," "it hurts," ect. because it lures humans and helps them score a meal. Frieren demons are just a more evolved version of these beasts. They dont need a backstory or personification because they're forces of nature.

@@DimitriMonroe Your description reminded me of the Einsam monster from the early episodes that eats humans by creating illusions of loved ones. If the demons were treated like this monster, I don't think I'd have the same frustration. I think my criticism is less that they should have dimensions and more that they do. The demons have genuine interests in things unrelated to killing, they have the capacity for reason, and they aren't driven by any innate hunger or hatred. They're treated as characters, and their lack of motivation damages them as characters, like an antagonist being handed the villain ball. I'd be fine with what you're describing, where they're just "human mimics" that are only programmed to kill, like the Einsam monster or the robots from 86. But if the author insists on treating them like characters, I feel obliged to critique them as such.

@@TwinflameByond I agree. I don't think the demons need to be anything more than obstacles to overcome. I wish the author of Frieren agreed, because he keeps giving us backstory and characterization of the demons to generate intrigue and then pulling out the rug.
