I've always thought that Kairi says Sora's name "Weird" because she's (presumably due to amnesia) "never said it before" so she isn't sure of the pronunciation, because her memories of Sora haven't fully returned yet.

I read it that way too. Japanese uses characters that sort of represent syllables instead of letters the way roman characters do. So presumably in the original, he said something like "it starts with そ(so)." This further explains why she separates the syllables out like that. I'm not sure why they didn't localize it better though.

The castle where Ansem's lab and stuff is in is the same castle from KH1. It's why Sora goes "It's Hollow Bastion" when he sees it. It's just been reconstructed and restored back to what it was before the world fell to darkness.

During the final battle with Xemnas, when Xemnas disables Sora as he does at 3:28:02, I think it would've been interesting if the player got to play as Roxas instead of Riku. They already had a pre-established moveset for Roxas, and it would've made the battle that much more personal for Roxas and Sora. What's more is that I think it would've been awesome if we got to see Roxas in his best costume, him in the black coat, like he was at the end of 358/2 days. That means he might feature moves from his battle earlier, using Magic to spawn light attacks and such. Whatever the budget will allow lol Given that they went out of their way to allow Xigbar to walk upside down, it's clear to me that the developers loved this game enough to do something like this, rather than give us playable Riku when he doesn't feel nearly as capable as he should: Not having any interactions with the games features like Magic, Drive, Summons, etc.

The plot twists in the Stormlight Archive are absolutely not retcons. Retconning is when a writer takes lore they themselves have established as true and fully intended them to be true at the time of writing, but then retroactively change, remove, or recontextualize to fit some new narrative they write later, so it doesn't clash with what lore they're currently establishing. Brandon Sanderson does not do this Stormlight, because there are no "lore dumps" in the typical sense. There's not a single part where some narrator, be it Sanderson himself or some character that can be trusted to know everything and thus be correct about everything they claim is true sports explanations about anything. Every bit of world building and is experienced fully in story context, through fallible, non-omnicient characters either speaking of their experience, beliefs, and opinions or actually experiencing things. Part of the great beauty and genius of Sanderson's stories is how the readers understanding of his worlds never exceeds that of the most knowledgeable character that lives in it, and only gets even that close until plenty of story has been told. In the case of the heralds, all the grandeur and worship was a consequence of warped history. As the story goes on, more and more of what society believed to be true, the nature of the heralds, the origin of Shards, the worth of the Parshmen/Singers, the reason for the Knights Radiant abandoning their duty, and so much more is shown to be so different and so much more than what society believed it was. The reader learns these things along with the characters. And, it was all intended from the start. It's obvious on rereading it. So many hidden details and things jump out at you, since you have the necessary context to understand them now. Heck, the first thing you read, the first prologue of the Way of Kings, demonstrates that Sanderson never intended the heralds to be what society thought they were, once you know what's actually going on there. Basically, no, Sanderson did not retcon anything in The Stormlight Archive.

While I adore Kingdom Hearts (as my second favorite game franchise, the first being Legend of Zelda), I cannot deny just how glaring a lot of its retcons can be. I suppose in Nomura's defense, he couldn't be sure he'd get to do a sequel to KH I, and so probably didn't think that far. Actually, the Kingdom Hearts narrative is a bit like the Weasley's house in Harry Potter. It started out with a mostly self-contained narrative in KH I, and then had more and more stacked on to it, all the while being adjusted to fit each addition. It creates a lot of weirdconnections, strange geometry, and perhaps the feel of shoddily put together crap shoot of a lot cool, yet poorly blended ideas. And yet, just like Harry loved the Weasley's house, I love KH anyway. There's nothing out there quite like it.

We're aware they abandon Tal before we even know anything else about them. The more notable retcon is Jasnah not dying, which is retconned as Jasnah using her powers to survive it but its never mentioned that she was glowing at the time of being stabbed.

I feel like you could make up some kind of in-universe explanation for why Sora can remember experiences but not spells and abilities. Like maybe forgetting them for a little bit weakens your inner power or something, so even if you remember them you have to acquire more power to use them? like your heart has to be able to handle it or something lol

1:01:15 Even in KH1 they go with the idea that at least a part of Sora's abilities are physical items see: Donald and Goofy giving Sora Dodgeroll and Fire as well as Cloud giving Sora Sonic Blade. Which leads to the funny implication that someone just pick pocketed Sora sometime between KH1 and 2 and that's why he can't use his spells anymore. IDK maybe Riku took them and just forgot to give them back. Of course this raises many more issues, I just thought it was fun to think about.

Against Lingering Will, Stitch is actually great if you are not doing a level 1 run because you just let him combo you to 1 HP and Stitch stun him for a while while releasing green orbs, then you just combo him, eat the revenge on purpose and repeat.

KH1 Final Mix came out the same year as KH1 and was the first game to introduce the retcons with the Unknown (Xemnas) teaser fight which is also why Vanilla KH2 has scenes from KH1 Final Mix of the Unknown fight as that's seen as the canon version. During the games restoration scenes you see Sora fighting Unknown in Vanilla KH2. Final Mix had the additional secret "Deep Dive" cutscene. They also gave 3 more Ansem Reports expanding on the Lore and even name drop Nobodies in the Final Report. It was retcon that happened in KH1 so is it really a retcon to the series? Also technically characters like Sephiroth were Retconned in as well because OG JP KH1 only had Phantom as the secret boss. Just to emphasize my point Final Mix was specifically 6 months after KH1 release. Also consider the fact most people will be playing Final Mix by default nowadays and it's actually much harder to play the original. So to a lot of people that's not a retcon. Then to anything about Birth by Sleeps retcons the Lingering Will Boss Fight he's saying things like "Aqua... Ven." "You seem familiar" "Keyblade?" "You're not the one I picked." "Is that you Xehanort?!". So then would the retcon technically be in KH2 then? If anything that helps directly explain why Riku was supposed to inherent a Keyblade. Something that's not even addressed in KH1's many mysteries that are still being slowly resolved. 1:54:53 There is no issue. Since Final Mix is the definitive version everyone plays there's no confusion and really shouldn't be as it's an expansion on the original content. As for Sephiroth you actually get Ansem Report 12 for beating him. Which is also how KH1 tries show how Malificent, Triton, and Leon know about anything that's happening. All the Bosses and Companions have an Ansem Report that help setup more for KH2 story. Ansem Reports in KH1 are also directly Referenced in KH2 Secret Ansem Reports making them very canon to the storytelling. 2:45:15 They most likely used Zexion Re:CoM version as the template for KH2 because they were using Re:CoM as a way to test out things for KH1 Final Mix. Then when Re:CoM was finished it was never individually released until later. Re:CoM came with KH2FM in another CD. Which is pretty crazy because this more or less confirms that KH1, KH1FM, CoM, KH2, KH2FM and Re:CoM were rushed. Like really think about that. Before CoM was even released they were already working on Re:CoM at the same time to get KH1FM ready in time. That's absolutely crazy on what that implies on the production side of things. They were legit working on 3 separate games at the same time. Fucking crazy.

Random fact, Wisdom form is actually busted. Its magic is really good, comes back faster, fire has a better execution by far, same for blizzard in my opinion, thunder admittedly just feels better personally, but as far as i know, because its magic specific, ONLY wisdom form reflect can be hit and the reflect take place at the enemies location as opposed to relying on them being next to you actively striking you. Its also completely broken using fatal crest berserk equipped with wisdom, because it skips the flip that shoots the burst of shots, you just continue blasting bursts of 3,but the negative combo finishing plus version of wisdom forms basic attacks makes the first flip go off faster and only the second one can get you punished for finishing, but this attack MANY times hits enemies that are in the air, higher in the air, and if youve done this twice on an enemy, theyll take a moment to fall before being able to respond unless you hit the revenge value, meaning your punish window for doing so doesnt matter anymore. Wisdom is actually my favorite form, its blue, capitalizes on magic without making it so broken people notice it. Its balanced OP, because your mobility takes a heavy hit, but with berserk charge you can shoot endlessly if youre dying but magic comes back faster due to haste so its really more of a plan b. I think wisdom form is EXTREMELY underrated

Due to the mobility issue, its outclassed by final form, which is meant to be broken, and Id ALMOST say master form is worse than wisdom because with my way of using wisdom form i can stay aggressive from a distance and keep shooting but also do heavy damage from that same distance once my mp comes back with reflect. Master forms attacks are very slow and i CONSTANTLY got hit and most enemies died to retaliation skills, not me actively finishing my attack. Master forms magnet thunder is silly. But its so for every magic using form. Valor form wouldve been MUCH better if instead of focusing solely on attack, whih i dont even think fits soras character, i think making valor form limit form wouldve broken the original game, but we got both ao its fine but due to it valor forms also prone to making me get hit, so i tap x tap square and clear a strip of area. Instead, what if it was just using 2 keyblades? Dont make it specialize in anything. Just allow me a second keyblade and whatever its inherent benefit is, and leave my stats alone. Allow me to keep mobility as well. essentially itd be base sora but a second keyblade at a cost, like roxas vs axel. If you REALLY still wanna bar magic ig

I have the roxas fight on my yt channel from when I used to speedrun kh2 a long time ago it is my favorite boss of all time it is thematically, emotionally and technically a masterpiece. For me luxord was always the hardest fight for the speedrun on critical at least. There is no way to control how he will act in the fight, I dont mean that's bad but for somebody who was less practiced in the speedrun luxord could lose me over an hour LOL

I think the actual numbered games just are the best in the series. Even if people have been super harsh on 3, in my opinion its still overall a great game, obviously KH2 is the 🐐. But all the side games honestly just dont stand up to 3's gameplay or story. I feel 3 was just so overhated. I agree attractions was a dumb add in, but happy they made it so you could get rid of them on critical mode. Oblivion, Oathkeeper, and Ultima transformations were refreshing and felt like drive forms, just obviously without all the leveling stuff. Hopefully 4 will follow the main story just as it should, and hopefully the gameplay is fun! Sorry for the rant, I just truly love KH like I'm sure you all do and I hope it keeps touching our hearts in the future like it does when they really get into their story telling bag.

interesting Critique of a game I love and I must say that I agree with almost everything. Tho some Boss-and Mob-encounters you described I found weird. I recently replayed lvl 1 and I blew through some encounters you had significant problems with, first try. Others I got stuck for a month of On-and-Off play.

I've been watching and enjoying your Kingdom Hearts stuff over the past few days. I rewatched your Birth By Sleep video last night, which I realized I had actually watched before quite a while ago-really liked your rewrite of the story, though personally nothing could ever save that game for me. A few things: First, I'd love if these videos had timestamps so I could easily go back to certain parts. Second, have you ever watched a channel called Tetramorre? Your videos remind me of his. Both are great. Third, I agree with so many of your points about retcons and the way Square Enix and its "writers" wilt any impact their stories once had. Fourth, I've got a long series on my channel that is an experimental vlog/KH3 playthrough hybrid as a tribute to my brother who died years ago. A weird series with probably very little entertainment value, but I want to get my brother's sort out there, so I'm plugging it here. Kingdom Hearts 2 is the only game that's made me buy a PS2 in 2016, just so i could burn the CD on my computer and play it again. I remember so much stuff from the game, even though i cant remember any dialogue or text from it. That speaks volumes about how much of a gameplay mastarclass that game is, because i remember the Lingering Will, Sephiroth, the 1000 heartless battle in Hollow Bastion, even the Tron segments and the first battle against the Nobodies as Roxas. Peter Pan is actually really broken on Critical. Gives you invincibility frames when attacking with his ability and Tinkerbells revive has saved me more times than not on critical. If anything I’d say Genie is probably my least used summon.

13:05 the way she says sora makes me think in the Japanese version he said "it starts with so" since they have a syllabary and not an alphabet, but it's weird that they'd direct the English actor to also voice it like she was given that same hint instead emphasizing just the S. Maybe the hiss of a long S wouldn't sound princess-y enough. I do know the voice director that worked with Kairi's voice actor wasn't a good one, though, so this weirdness is just the norm. Kairi wasn't allowed to give a natural performance because the voice director wanted everyone to sound like they were giving a dramatic monologue where every word holds the weight of the series and as a result it's really hard to engage with if you're not already a super fan ~ because most of the things being said don't actually matter and get overexplained way too much.

Personally when I play kh1 I use fire on almost every combo. Thousands of times a playthrough. It’s range and knock back let’s you skip some boss fights, being Leon in the coliseum, and the heartless that captures pinnoccio on the first fight who are both so utterly demolished by it that they don’t get to even attack. Gravira followed by fira takes out most mobs after hollowbastion.

Near the end, you talk of forms. For all but final form, leveling forms is much easier using my method but it does take some completion. Bad part you gotta get the 100 acre woods keyblade, and 2, you need to get wishing lamp. Lamp creates more drops and sweet memories makes those extra drops drive orbs, which mimics fhe function of you using oathkeeper because how many you get you dont need it. Go to Beasts room in the castle and turn into whatever form while there to completely avoid anti form. When you exit, youll see statues and hammer heartless, or possibly red nocturnes, and those mechanical ball heartless. All drop drive orbs but even more so now. I suggest doing wisdom here instead, and obviously master form. You can level valor form really easily up TILL now, but because its hits, the drive orbs arent needed so you could use oathkeeper if you really wanted. Final form its obvious where you should go. For lower level, twilight town mansion and later, twtnw. Play through again, whatever difficulty, and seriously. try this method. Summoning is easy here too to level. They drop so many, let anyone go out, and whenever the bar drops a number, pick up some orbs and itll go up and immediately drop again. that counts as a bar depleting even though it was only up again for half a second, you can max summons SO EASILY with this method. I think people forget to PAIR your effects and so ive always done drives extremely quickly compared to others.

Yeah, except using that method means you have to deal with enemies more than the Agrabah mushroom method for valor/limit form and summons, whereas you can go on autopilot using the mushroom. For Master, maxing it using the method I syated takes like five minutes anyway, so there’s not much point to optimizing it further, and I'm skeptical whether your method is faster than literally five minutes from start to finish. I can't say for wisdom whether your method would be faster as I've always done the shadow/neoshadow thing in twtnw and only said the Bazaar off of hearsay from speedrunners. Im still learning some of the math and stuff but everytime i tell someone this method i use they never use it. And i also 100% games i just need the blueprints for gummis and ill have the plat for this, i have the plat for kh as well, and only recently have i been going into it more, replaying the entire game to see what difference a single change makes. Like speedrunning practice but i dont speedrun. But i concede i think i was more confident in what i stated here than i shouldve been, because admittedly, im comparing this to the method i USED to use alongside my buddy who likes the series even more, which was bazaar as you said for master. Only after pairing sweet memory and three wishes did i see how bonkers fast you can master master form. Wisdom is easier leveled in land of dragons now that i think about it. i used to use twtnw because the shadows but they consistently sank into thr ground so i had to use magnet but id still run out of mp so id have too much down time. Excellent video by the way, im literally restarting it in a moment for my playthrough in sec. I agree with all 4 hours. and i like debating ideas and seeing what we come up with and pretty much not once did i say what the hell is he on about.

​@@WhereIStandIsWhereIFall also adding when i do master form, im 100% im getting more orbs out of less enemies, but i suppose how many enemies are in that narrow hall and outside of it, bazaar may still be better and im being fooled by the abundance i see, but i go from master form level 1 to 5 in about the same time, 5 minutes if thats ALL im doing. 15 minutes MAX once youre past a certain level because your damage makes it easier to kill em, youd be leveling up here, plus the drops for synth. What difficulty were you playing on for this video? You mention a LOT how enemies can one-shot you when at proper level, but that just isn’t a thing in any difficulty below critical. Currently 1 hour and 30 minutes into the video when I write this, and man your opinions are insanely counter to nearly everyone else’s that I’ve heard. It’s honestly interesting hearing someone talk about the game this way, since KH2(FM) is still the game that gets jerked off the most. Although I will say that some of the things you said regarding things other than gameplay are strange to me, mainly things that are directed towards the story. Again, only an hour and a half into the video when I write this, so I’m interested to see what the rest of the review is like.

Okay so, random note. The castle you visit in 2 in Radiant Garden IS the same one from the first game. In 2 they’re dissecting and rebuilding it, and you can visibly see different parts of the castle from 1 either still attached to the castle or being removed from it. The Dark Depths in 2 is NOT the castle from 1, as you can see a Dark Depths kind of place in both the concept art of the world, and in the world icon for Hollow Bastion in 1.

Also, what exactly is wrong with the Ansem retcon? It doesn’t exactly contradict anything from 1 or ReCOM when put in the same story, as the events of the game don’t change from it. Ansem in 1 was referred to as a wise ruler, before he disappeared. Also in 1, there are the Ansem reports, which are written by Ansem, and the secret reports in 2 don’t contradict anything in those, either. The retcon wasn’t necessary, but I think the game wouldn’t be as interesting without it, as Ansem the Wise does add quite a lot to the story.

I was playing on Critical. I explain that after the final boss when I then go into Level 1 tips for those that want it. For the Ansem retcon, this is definitely the least egregious example of a KH retcon, but I don't like it because of what it allows the rest of the series to turn into. If we, as fans, were more critical of this retcon, then maybe the series wouldn't have changed so drastically post KH2.

I think it’s more because the lead writer for the first few games left after 2, and the people that followed weren’t as good. As well, as Nomura seemingly got more creative control over KH behind the scenes, which ultimately leads us to where we are currently, with the Quadratum stuff from 3 basically being FF VS XIII (a cancelled Nomura project that the man still hasn’t let go of).

Despite the fact that it is trapped on Mobile the chi saga is the best story in the series. As for kh2 I like the meat of the story but the structure is annoyingly long and anything of importance is only shown after 13 total Disney world visits, the level design is a walking simulator. Say what you will about kh3 but at least it keeps the story moving and has some effort with level design. Kh2 has neither, it is not even a better game than the first, let alone the third and I will stand by this forever.

In terms of level design, KH3 has a lot more going on in it than KH2 that's for sure. In terms of story you got it backwards as there's plenty of interesting story beats in the Disney worlds of KH2 especially after the 1000 Heartless battle like fighting Riku in Land of Dragons or straight up killing Xaldin in Beast's Castle. In KH3 you could legit skip every cutscene from the end of the first Twilight Town visit to the end of San Fransokyo with very little exceptions of certain between world cutscenes and you'd miss absolutely nothing. The entire reason for going to the Disney worlds in KH3 is for Sora to find the power of waking and he doesn't even need it to rescue Aqua, and learns he never lost it when they go get Ven, meaning the Disney worlds are all the way pointless.
