When Saladin offers the cup of water (ice) to Guy, its a symbolic gesture; When you drink from it, you become his guest (instead of a prisoner) and you wont have to fear being harmed (the guest-right is taken very serious). Thats why Saladin clarified to Reynald, that he didnt offer the cup to him, after he took it from Guy and drank from it.

As a deist I love all the spiritual questioning that the directors cut tackles. Best scene in the whole movie is when he talks to the hospitaler knight in the desert, creates a burning bush, but ends up with two. We’re left to question did proximity cause it, the heat, spontaneous combustion, or was God sending him his answer.

This is the better version, because elements of the story are restored that are important. Balian's brother is a villain. Balian's character development is the point of the story. There are aspects that are happening in Balian's imagination. Balian's vision regarding his dead wife and of Sybilla, at the end, reflect his emotions. A good action movie, even if you aren't religious.

King and his nephew had leprosy. A little bit of penicillin could have saved both of their lives. I am a historian, and this is one of my favorite films. The cinematography is extraordinary. And I love the fact that it portrays the regular people on both sides in a decent light. I love the friendship that ensues from the point the horse tries to be taken by the Islamic Lord, until the other Islamic Lord and his friend gives the horse back. That relationship is dynamic. It's one of the things that makes this film so extraordinary. But they do a good job of capturing the period and what everything was like during that time. And you're right, the average age was somewhere between 30 to 50. The wealthier you were the longer your lifespan. Normally. Even at the time of the American Revolution, it was rare for someone to live as long as Washington and Franklin. Even at the turn of the last century, the late 19th century early 20th century, the average family had eight kids, four of whom made it to adulthood. I can't even imagine the world they lived in where they had to be that comfortable with death. Braveheart is an extraordinary film as well. You'll also like last of the Mohicans with danielis and Madeline Stowe, and of course dances with wolves with Kevin Costner.

Fun Fact: The knight know as the "Hospitaler" (The Black and White Cross good guy) was actually a "angel" of sorts, or a messenger from God. If you go back and pay close attention you will notice how certain lines he speaks as someone who has been in Gods presence......and then how he is a kinda mythical messenger.......and at the very end he says that he will speak with Baylians father and tell him what hes become. The usual Hollywood wrecking of history. Balian was never a blacksmith and never lived in France. He was born and lived in the Holy Land. He was in his 40s at the time of the fall of Jerusalem. His wife wasn't dead, she (widow of Amalric IV iirc) was alive and well at the time of the movie. When Balian was captured at Hattin, he was allowed to return to Jerusalem for one day to retrieve his wife. Balian didn't need to teach his people about irrigation, they'd been doing it for centuries. There was no romance with Sybilla. She was entrenched in the "Frankish" faction her husband belonged to. Balian was in the "Nativist" faction, which believed that they needed to live in peace with their neighbors. Sallah Al-Din wanted Jerusalem because he wanted Jerusalem. He didn't "release" the people of Jerusalem, he ransomed them. Any who couldn't afford the ransom were sold into slavery.

The historical accuracy of this movie is about 3/10. Most of the names are correct (although Bailian was at least 20 decades older, and a noble since birth). Most of the costumes are more or less plausible. Some of the historical scenes were correct. But other than that it is a pure fantasy. Basically NONE of the characters act like their historical selves.

Balian was a local high lord and not a random bastard from France. He was also married with a very important noble lady. Part of Jerusalem population were enslaved after the fall. Others had to pay ransom to leave. Balian did have fairly good relations with the muslims. He was considered a noble enemy. Guy and Reynald were not cartoon vilains. There were many skirmishes going around between muslims and christians. Saladin was overall building up and wanting to attack. Guy and Reynald were just trying to mess him up as much as possible in order to slow him down. Yes, in the end Guy did a serious blunder leading the army to Hattin. He did not prove to be a good military strategist. But again, he was no cartoon vilain.

Saladin didn't want to attack, he did this because a treaty between Muslim and Christian orthodox who live inside Jerusalem. This what happened when you didn't look back along the history what happened 300++ years earlier. Second caliph of Islam named umar ibn Al khattab manage to rule Jerusalem, when he entered Jerusalem, no bloodshed happened. After he entered and pray solah, he with Christian leader make a treaty that Muslim will rule Jerusalem as long as Muslim protect Christian and give their rights and never destroy religious building nor kill people inside Jerusalem. That treaty is still there in Jerusalem. Majority of crusaders are Catholic, they saw orthodox as blasphemous and want holy land for themself. When crusaders entered Jerusalem, they kill 80K people including Christian orthodox. Saladin want to give that treaty rise again in Jerusalem by kicking out those crusaders because they act like barbarian and didn't respect treaty. Even among Christian scholar said crusaders only using Christian name but what they did is pillaging along from Italy to Jerusalem from money, to jewellery to village just like what ISIS did in middle east

Would like to suggest you guys research the Crusades which will help with understanding the real lives and events of the characters involved in this movie and then if you feel like it watch this again. While it is more fun to go into movies not knowing anything about them there are exceptions this being a major one. After he returned to France Balian joined King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) on a 3rd Crusade and at the Battle of Jaffa in 1192 Balian defeated Saladin again, he died shortly after. Sybilla did not cheat on Guy that is one of the 452 inaccuracies in this movie.

Great film, but historically flawed. The real Balian de Ibelin's life was pretty fascinating, he was a true born nobility, great warrior, been and fought in the Holy land his entire life, didn't marry Sibylla. And the real King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem was such a fierce and capable leader of the Crusaders, it was only realized when he died, the christian army of Europe faltered and disorganized until King Richard I of England raised another conquest to liberate the elusive kingdom of heaven.

Why couldnt they both be single? If you meant getting divorce, christians can not get divorced actually. They were simply following it very well back then. Either way, people used to get married very very young. According to some researches, well, many widows were at their "teens ages" (teen according to today's "standard"). Specially ladies, they were married very young around the age of 10 y.o, even in europe. So, the reality for this movie would be closer by subtracting the ages of the actors by 10-15 years. Perhaps that queen was actually under 20 y.o or even under 15 y.o. In the end of this movie, salahudin said "because im salahudin". But actually, the real quote was "im muslim". I guess hollywood got too much pride for the actual quote.

The First Three Crusades were religeous and hardship adventure in foreign lands..and in hundreds of years, the landscape has not changed…nor has the people..and throughout the world..50 years of age was old..60…ancient..65..dead..mostly because of sanitation, unhealthy eating, disease, and poverty…cities were filthy and disease spread..like the Black Plague which killed 60% of Europe from infected rats hitching rides on ships from Asia going to ports in Europe..
