I dont know if its been mentioned, but the movie version of Balian was noted as being an Engineer, not simply a blacksmith. Hes running a smithy while not being engaged in war, and is disenchanted with warfare in general because of his past experiences. Hence also, his insight into siege craft that he shares with the King of Jerusalem. Additional note, I dont think he was educating the king in siege craft, I feel rather the scene portrays the King assessing just who Balian is and how intelligent Balian is or isnt upon their first real encounter. Great video, I thoroughly enjoy these presentations.

David Thewlis's Hospitaller character isn't an atheist. He isn't even human! He's some kind of guardian angel. Note the scene where he pops out of nowhere to save Bailin and then mysteriously dissapears.

That is an interesting theory I've heard before. And I really liked the video on the subject. The "angel" is only interaction with Bailin which is a pretty cool and just commenting on the other characters behavior. (If my memory dosen't fail me). Now I have to find that video. 🤔

If judge on the director's cut of the film, it would be highly unfair to say The Hospitaller was 'secular' or 'atheistic'. He actually strengthen Balian's faith as they shared conversation and prayer in the desert. It seems that Scott placed The Hospitaller in a position of angelic being rather than human.

Derrick Liu I got that exact same impression from the Hospitaller. There were several points where I went, "Okay, this guy is CLEARLY an Angel disguised as a human."

I'm honestly a little surprised that whenever you talk about Reynald De Chatillon in your Crusades videos, you consistently refer to this portrayal of him as a "bumbler", because when I watched this film, I NEVER got that impression from him. I always (still do) saw this portrayal as someone who was VERY deliberate in his choices, knew what he was doing, and didn't care about the consequences because he felt he could get away with them because of his alliance with Guy De Lusignan.

In the directors cut it says that Balian had been a siege engineer.... And Balian charges the arab cavalry in order to delay them so that the peasant could get to kerak. Which of course is daft (you don't sacrifice knights for pawns) but that's the reason given.

Funny that Guy of all people in this movie says at some point to the child king "always accompany your knights with footsoldiers".

I loved the movie, one of my favourite, but even before watching your videos i had many problems with things like those you and the other historians talk about, good channel, subbed and liking everything i can watch. What are other historically accurate movies you could suggest?

Love the review. You guys are doing the theatrical cut. The directors cut is an entirely different movie. In that cut, *sp Bailion was a siege engineer in times of war for his lord in France. It makes the advice he gives the king more realistic besides the star fort stuff. It also makes the climax siege at the end more realistic

The mask of Baldwin always reminds me of the masks worn by roman cavalry in the early Imperial period if I remember rightly

As it regards to the scene where King Baldwin asks for balian's input, I believe Ridley Scott was trying to impress upon us the humility of the king . That is true. King Baldwin could have been seen how knowledgeable billion actually was in the matters of warfare

I never looked at the Kingdom of Heaven as a history lesson. I thought it all fiction from the beginning. It sounds like I was right. You could have done this review in 5 minutes. The people (or just their names) existed, but the rest is just a story. All 3 parts were very interesting. Is there a movie out there that is historically correct?

Thank you for setting the record straight on many of these issues. Although it's merely a movie, the potential art has to accelerate revisionism cannot be understated. Videos like these are essential if we are to learn actual lessons from the real past, and so what you're doing is very important...while at the same time we can still find many things in the film to enjoy

Actually the one time I can think of where cavalry alone battled combined arms was at Legnano (1176), which ended in an embarrassing defeat for Frederick Barbarossa's cavalry at the hands of the Lombard League.
