Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Stars Reveal the Weirdest Part of Ape School

Portraying primates in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes required the actors to go through a special kind of training dubbed "Ape School." Part of that training meant building a trust in one another, as explained by Owen Teague.
In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Teague plays a chimpanzee named Noa who befriends a human woman played by Freya Allan. The two actors spoke about their roles in the film in a new interview with CBR's Kevin Polowy, and the conversation turned to Ape School. When asked about the weirdest thing he had to do in Ape School, Teague detailed a trust-building exercise wherein the ape actors would take turns being carried around the room with their eyes closed.
"We did this exercise, that was kind of a trust-building exercise, really," Teague said. "We did a lot of work that wasn't specifically about how to be an ape, and it was just more with our bodies' physical movement work. We did this one thing... we would close our eyes, and everybody else in the group would lift the one person in the center up and carry them around in the room on their hands, as they had their eyes closed, and dropped them off in a different part of the room."
Freya Allan Was Given the Same Treatment
While Allan plays a human, she was also given the same treatment. She spoke about how she would sometimes visit the Ape School while her co-stars were in training, and at one point, she was similarly carried around the room. The difference was that Allan wasn't told beforehand what exactly was going to happen when she closed her eyes, though she explained how it made her feel welcomed by the ape actors.
"They just told me to shut my eyes, and I had no idea what was going on," she said. "They were just lifting me. But it works! Because I remember feeling like, 'Oh my god, I've been welcomed in.' Like a big hug."
Teague added, "You trust the people you're with immediately with those kinds of exercises."

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is directed by Wes Ball and written by Josh Friedman. The film also stars Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.
In the film, per the synopsis, "Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike."
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in movie theaters.
