I have some mixed feelings about this sermon. He used 1 John 3:11 as a segway to preach on how to be a good person, when the verse is not teaching on this, but rather provides believers assurance in the faith marked by their genuine love for each other and obedience to God's law. Those who hate, or do not walk in rightousness, should examine themselves to see if they are saved. I hate to nitpick, but the gospel wasn't really presented well here. He said Jesus didn't die to change God's mind about you, but for you to change your mind about him. This is a strange interpretation when the Bible says that we are by nature slaves to sin, dead in our transgressions and that the wrath of God abides on us. Jesus died to take the punishment meant for us, clothe us in his righteousness, so that we can pass from death to life, all offered by grace through faith and not by works. I question Shane's theology a bit, just because he would repeat the phrase "if you see a need, and it's within your ability to do something about it, and you don't, then God's not in that". When the verse was really saying "if you see a brother in need and you have no pity, then how can God's love be in that person" the context of the whole chapter is a providing a guiding line of assurance to believers, and what walking in righteousness looks like.
