I believe the learned fact that failure could lead to unwanted grind is one of the many factors in play that led me and drove me to making better decisions and strategy execution. Also grinding can be a blessing in disguise if you look at it the right way. It's because of grinding that my parry/stagger skills became so fine tuned that I could slaughter entire environments of normies with viscerals and instilled confidence to attempt staggers on bosses.

God, this. I never ever had an issue with vials during the main game, I always had more than I knew what to do with. Played through this game to completion 5 times and not had to ever grind for vials during main game or dlc, I don't get what folk are doing that means they're always having to grind for more. The ONLY time I had to grind for vials was when I was going through the lower levels of chalice dungeons for the trophies, and that's only because barely anything in chalice drop vials on death, and some of the bosses there took a fair few attempts. And even then, you can just do a quick loop starting at Yarhnam's first bonfire, quick lap around (by which point you're probably one shotting most enemies in that area), and a lap that takes maybe 5mins or less will net you about 30-50 vials and enough blechos to buy 50 more. There you go. 100 vials in 5 mins, ooooh such a grind. I will say that the improvement of maybe having vials as a finite source, but maybe having a bonfire rest automatically giving you 10-20 vials if you're below that number might have at least aided all these complaints. That way you can stock up on masses if you want, but if you do run out, you'll still have some to deal with a boss rather than taking a break to grind. Wouldn't really be a negative addition.

Spam everyone would have to farm for vials If they used them how people use estus in dark souls, with the knowledge that they regenerate upon death or resting. I’ve never had to farm vials yet and I think I only have OoK and Laurence left outside of chalices, but it’s because I intentionally save them for “good attempts” rather than just using them in every attempt. In my opinion, it’s just an unnecessary impediment to enjoyment, especially considering it is the most difficult of the souls games (yeah it’s a souls game, if it was called “dark souls: the old blood” no one would ever have wondered why). Personally, I’d just enjoy it way more if you had limited healing but it replenished. It also adds a stress factor to dying on bosses that isn’t the fun kind. “I just wasted finite resources and have nothing to show for it” is not a feeling I like to have when playing a game.

@@decimater75 See, I find it by far the easiest of the souls games. I dunno, perhaps because it was my first ever of the series, but I just really got the hang of it's systems and never personally had an issue with running out of vials thanks to the system of being able to replenish your health just by hitting back. I was rarely ever having to use vials thanks to the revenge hitting. I admit, as a newbie to the series I found Papa G really hard the first few attempts, but when I watched someone else defeat him and realised I needed to play very aggressively rather than constantly backing away, I then defeated him straight away, and it set me up well for every other bosses too. When I played DS1 and 3 recently I found the estus kind of frustrating in early game where you only have 3 fills of it, just felt that method meant I was having to run back to bonfires a lot. DS is a little bit more slow paced than I like anyways. All personal preference. I don't disagree that some amount of refill on resting would be a help for some players though. Can't really see a downside to it.

I had a similar experience, though I did grind once or twice further in. I sucked (it being my first Souls game) so I died a lot early on. That meant fighting the same enemies a lot, many of which drop blood vials. I also barely used my gun (a dumb decision in retrospect), so I never ran out of bullets. Further on though when I was dying less in the levels but more on the bosses, I started running dry. Thankfully by that time I could do the pig run through the Forbidden Woods, which gets you a crap ton rather quickly.

This "grind" you speak about goes with the theme of the game. Just like the estus fit DS. In DS we associates the fire with life and since the bonfires were connected to this life source we could refill there. But in this game there is no well of blood that can be tapped into. It must be taken, whether it's from an enemy, a whore, or the chaste. Nothing is givin...it must all be taken

In defense of the blood vials, I think From wanted you to be aggressive and keep attacking which would lead to high usage and that's why enemies drop them so often. If you're good enough you never need to grind and will get enough naturally. It's why the common answer of "make less vials but have them replenish" doesn't make sense to me, that's a Dark Souls mentality. At least from my experience DS in theory treats estus as a mistake counter and you should be able to avoid damage. You don't even need to have estus equipped. BB expects you to take damage due to the aggressiveness and blood rally system, but even the best players will need to heal, it's also why healing is so quick and has a dedicated button as opposed to DS. While a no hit run is possible From seemed to purposely make healing essential. I think the finite amount is the result of there not being a perfect solution bc if you keep getting blood vials from enemies and they always replenished they wouldn't be much of a reward either. If they replenished the risk is low but the issue is it introduces the option to grind which gets rid of that risk even though it's player choice. I actually don't mind going back and grinding on any playthrough though. Bc imo the combat is inherintly fun and it allows me a chance to hone my skills and also get more blood echoes. Esp later in the game when you get the moon and eye runes, you can get a bunch of vials and echoes from one round of grinding. And you can buy a huge surplus of them with those echoes. And it also will sometimes lead to new encounters. I only came across the hunter fight in Gascoigne's boss arena bc I went back to grind for instance. However I do wonder why bullets are finite as well. It was obviously intentional bc of the blood bullet system but the game incentivises you using them frequently as well. Maybe it's also the result of nothing being perfect and if you could rely on having 20-25 always then you have the DS1 issue of magic/arcane/bloodtinge/etc builds being op since you can reliably mow down enemies.

Bloodborne was also my first entry into the Soulsborne universe, atleast on that I properly played through (Dark Souls 2 didn't help my already pre conceived notion of the series). I actually didn't play this game until 2018 when I got a PS4 as a late christmas gift, a friend of mine family shared Bloodborne with me and told me to play it. I knew it was by From Software and I knew I was probably not even gonna get past the first boss, my friend said he would help me with any boss I needed it with but I still didn't think I would enjoy the game. I played through until I beat Father Gascoigne and I still wasn't impressed with the game. I was happy I actually beat a boss but this game wasn't living up to everything I've heard about the Souls series, that was up until I beat Vicar Amelia. That boss fight gave me so much relief after and I began to understand why people play these games, I wasn't quite there yet but the passion was growing. I continued on with the game almost like I couldn't stop playing, I was still in school at the time and I barely paid attention in class I was just busy thinking about strategies on how to go about trying to kill the Shadows of Yharnam. Once that roadblock was passed and I killed Rom, my mindset completely changed. The game opened up in a way that enticed me, seeing the Amygdala now, and seeing all the horror that sat underneath Yharnam all this time I felt like at that moment I truly started the game. I went back and started watching all of Vaati's lore videos because this world suddenly pulled me in and I wanted to know everything. I played through it all, beat Gerhman and the Moon Presence, then immediately bought the game and the DLC for myself and started NG+. This game opened me up to a whole series of games I never thought I would enjoy in my life. I have since gone back and beat Dark Souls 1 and 3 and have beaten Bloodborne god knows how many times now. It quickly became my favorite game of all time, so much so to the point where if someone asks me what my favorite game is I don't even have time to think before "Bloodborne" slips out. I love this game so much it's honestly probably unhealthy but damn, it will always be, imo, Miyazaki's best work

Yahrnam is interconnected. Central Yahrnam in particular is a masterpiece of interconnected level design. The overall world may not be as connected as Dark Souls' is, but that doesn't mean they aren't interconnected. I agree with virtually everything else you said though, and I'm glad you rebutted those ridiculous complaints about the weapons. This is my favourite game in the series, in spite of its flaws. I believe they made blood vials finite because it made sense in the game world. In Dark Souls fire is pretty much life incarnate so it would make sense that when you hit a bonfire your estus flasks would regenerate whereas in bloodborne it's hard to make blood vials magically appear or regenerate at a certain time unless there's a chance you can snag blood from your enemies to heal you. This also makes sense with Quicksilver Bullets since I've noticed it's pretty easy to get them from gun wielding enemies such as the old guys in wheelchairs.

My main thing about the complaint towards the grind is that if you're grinding to *buy* blood vials, you're doing it wrong. The starting area gives you an insane amount of blood vials and bullets to where 2-3 passes on up until the church will give you a full stock of vials, and then some. Theres really no need to buy them, especially once you're leveled up, unless you just have than many echos to spare, or recently did a run of the late chalice dungeons

The only thing i can see to balance Blood Vials with regeneration is to leave it capped at 20 the entire game, but have the overall upgraded heal strength be half of what you can upgrade to in DS 1 and 2. Or make it so you gain 1 health vial for every visceral attack. Like your character is extracting blood from the enemy and putting it in a vial for health. It allows you to control when to gain back health vials for a run, and it's much better than in Dark Souls where you randomly gain an estus fill back just because a random player kindled a bonfire in the area you're in, in their game

But it does add something considering you can have larger distances between checkpoints if the enemies drop vials once in awhile. Think the forbidden woods or central yharnam. Estus by itself puts a shorter limit on bonfire distance, gems make it too easy as you can have a zillion (I know you can have 99 humanity in 1 but we're talking initial playthroughs), Bloodborne is the perfect medium, you can pick up more along the way but there's still a cap. It even has a way to regenerate vials on death considering you can store up to 600. That's the point of buying them, building up your storage so you always have some to restore.

In DS, fire is your life essence, it makes sense that you'd be able to heal at one and that your estus gets restored when you return to one upon death. In bloodborne, it's blood that must be taken from somebody, be it beast, hunter or god. I'm currently on my first play through and finally gitting gud. I beat the Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne. The Blood-Starved Beast is giving me trouble too. I currently am experiencing that grind you mentioned about the blood vials because fucking Durja and his damn Gatling gun ate my stockpile so that the Blood-Starved Beast was just a nail in the coffin. Grinding for blood vials sure is fun (insert sarcasm). I also have to grind for antidotes because poison is a problem in the boss fight. Hopefully will get through it soon and onto the rest of this amazing world.

Not knowing anything about it I got dark souls and tried to play it. I didn't even make it through the undead burg and I quit. Said fuck it I'm never playing this, it is just too hard. Quite some time later I was scrolling through the PlayStation Network and came across bloodborne. It looked amazing. I was very compelled by the trailer and decided to buy it. Low and behold I discover that it was in the same format as dark souls which I swore I would never play again. I tried playing it and just couldn't handle it. So I put it down for a few months. At the time I was battling a rather intense meth addiction and I was really trying to quit. So what did I do. I sat down and told myself I'm going to distract myself with this game and I'm going to keep at it until I beat it....this was the moment. I delved into it and found that it was one of the greatest if not THE greatest gaming experience of my life. I put hundreds of hours into it. Last I played I was new game +5. I went back and conquered dark souls 1 and 3...and I'm two and a half years sober.

After replaying again, I agree with everything. The blood vial problem goes away in NG+ because you can buy stacks no problem but on a ng cycle, gotta kill a lot of things to get vials, sucks when you use em all on a boss

Your chalice dungeon argument would have been good if you had mentioned blood gems, which are at least for me the main reason to complete the chalices. The dungeons offer the best gems in the game and they're something you need if you plan on beating subsequent playthroughs.

I think you were too hung up on comparing the blood vials to estus near the end, if you were only given 5 blood vials max between lamps you'd never get anywhere, and if you're getting from lamp to lamp only using 5 vials or less, I don't understand how you kept running out. I think the blood vials system works very well along with the rally system imo, great review though all the same, captured everything I love so much about the game.

i think letting you hold so many vials at a time made the game too easy. should have limited it to maybe 12, and can bring it up a bit with those enhancements that let you hold more, which would bring it up to 18 max if you used all 3 slots for them.

The blood vial thing never got me. I agree its a problem... But only because so many people complained about it. Bloodborne was my first souls game and i just never had to grind. I DID take thr game pretty slow and bought vials sometimes even when i didnt need to but over all never once did i run out or have to grind.

Dude. You never have to go to a lantern if you need vials. Its called a bold hunters mark you wake up at the lantern with all your echos and start again. Yet the only time i ever had to go farm fo vials was when 2 bosses in a row were kicking my ass in the later chalice dungeons. Its like everyone on youtube has no clue what a bold hunters mark is. Which is why i watch cowboy, he does his research. Other than that i did enjoy the video. Ill shoot you a like. :)

12:55, the game does definitely not seem as easy for a veteran. It tricks your muscle memory. In DS you are conditioned to use your shield and play defensive. When you get to bloodborne, the absence of a shield makes you feel reaaaaally unsafe, and usually try to play defensive as you were previously conditioned, and in doing so, the game beats the shit out of you. It took me some time to understand I had to be aggressive this time.

I would have to disagree with you for the grind. I feel like you are an honest player, and I get that sense with your other Souls reviews. Anyway, after you reach the Lecture Building a literal 2-3 minute run in a room with Slime Scholars nets enough Bloodechoes to overstock after 2-3 runs. Game progression afterwards dropped so much bullets and vials restocking only required upkeep from a portion of blood echoes I earned through a level play through.

Im still incredibly salty about the fact that this games is a PS4 exclusive and I was robbed (or rather i robbed myself because of my curiosity and lack of money to buy a PS4 lol) of the oppurtunity to experience it for myself near its release. Im a massive fan of the souls series and souls like game in general. The first playthrough of DS1 was truly magical, as you said its an expeirence you cherish for a lifetime, its like nothing else. The only other game that was able to scratch that itch again was RE2 Remake. My first RE game ive ever played. And Bloodborne looks like another Miyazaki masterpiece, in could easily stand next to DS1 as one of the most incredible games ever and I would love to experience it for the first time, Im certain it would be an incredible experience maybe even topping what DS1 on my personal list. But I ruined it for myself by watching countless playthroughs, lore discussions etc. Even if this game came out on PC right now it just wouldnt be the same, because I know pretty much everything about this game without ever even playing it. A real shame. I hope Elden Ring will have what I look for.

I love all your souls reviews! But I did find it interesting you said good luck getting thru the game w.o blood vials or bullets. Yeah I'd agree about vials but I never really found the need to farm expect when I got stuck on Vicar Amilia. The enemies drop them so frequently I always had a ton in overflow box. And as someone who never used a gun on first playthru you can get thru game without bullets lol. I used Kirkhammer all the way, but I never liked to parry in the souls games so the gun felt odd to me.

100% agree with the complaints on Chalice Dungeons and Blood Vials. Don't really agree with the hub complaint though. Personally, I really like the Hunter's Dream and the Doll. One big problem I do have that you didn't mention is the Blood Gem system. I fucking hate it. It's minimal, random stat buffs. I think I'd be more ok with it if every Blood Gem was like Amelia's Pendant, Viola's Brooch, or the Doll's Tear. Specific, named, unique items. Even if they give super minor buffs, at least I don't have to farm for them in Chalice Dungeons, and they give me something to read about. Half my joy in finding a new item in a Souls game isn't because I want to use it, but because I want to read about it and see what new information it gives me.

I love bloodborne, but I do so wish (personally) that either the chalice dungeons were all designed by hand and made more varied from one another or that that maybe (MAYBE) the game took place in a procedurally generated manner with some set peices so the P.G. could have been better implemented and less same-y. Either one would have solved the problem

finite bloodviles is not an issue. you have the health rally system to he as l back damage took, and they’re cheap as hell to buy from the hub world. even as a noob i never had to farm. so if your always farming bloodviles, chances are your chugging too much and aren’t playing effectively.

The trick weapons feel more personal. I really like that. They feel really unique too. Kinda like every weapon type in Monster Hunter. I love having more options in souls, but when I really think about it. I pretty much find one really good weapon I'm comfortable with, and never really find anything else worth the stats you need. Every weapon in BB feels extremely different. Of course I still have a favorite *cough* the axe *cough* but I look forward to my next playthrough so I can try a different weapon on the bosses next time. Like Monster Hunter, every fight feels completely different just by changing your weapon type. Of course the same could be said for the other souls games. But to be honest I feel stupid for using anything but the best in the other games. It just feels like needlessly crippling myself instead of having fun with something new, when I know most of the weapons suck ass. Sure Bloodborne has that sword that feels leagues better than the other weapons. But I never feel like I need it or am crippling myself without it. Trick weapons feel like your only friend in Bloodborne, mastering them is fun as hell. And look way more badass than a fully upgraded shortsword or something.
