His performance at Woodstock is legendary. With no other acts able to arrive yet, Havens has to stay onstage so long that he ran out of songs. At that, he improvised Freedom and that song became an indelible memory. The thing I love about him is that he never changed who he was, over the years. A gentle yet powerful singer that kept the same counterculture ideals.

OMG I haven't heard this song in so long. I have to pull out my Richie Havens' album. Thanks for this.

I got to go to dinner with him about a year before he died. Amazing person!

Great reaction! Such a great performance! If you liked that, you would love other classic Woodstock performances like Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner, Ten Years After playing I'm Goin' Home, Crosby Stills & Nash's performance of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Sly & The Family Stone's performance of I Wanna Take You Higher or Santana playing Soul Sacrifice.

Excellent song! Richie Havens was a sweet soul. Check out "High Flying Bird" and "San Francisco Bay Blues", although most of his catalog is wonderful!
