One major point on these vessels sinking. With iron plating fore and aft theyd have signifigant strain amidships and would highly likely to hog (curve up in the centre) which would over time or in heavy weather snap under its own weight. So no none of the vessels involved seem particularly gifted at heavy weather.

You know, when I think of ancient naval warfare, I often think something is missing. When I see the miles of ocean, narrow, confined spaces of ships, most often filled with dangerous men with swords and or spears, I do think, "why yes, what an excellent space to employ cavalry." 23:30 I think the results speak for themselves.

As a naval history enthusiast, I absolutely hate how galleys (ships powered by oars and sails) are depicted as motor boats sailing around with a speed of a modern torpedo, and how nobody standing on top of them seems to be affected when they ram straight into basically a standing target.

I know you don't talk about the historical accuracy of the film but the SIN the director commited by giving the honor of the battle of Marathon to Themistocles instead of bothering to include Miltiades,the real leader during that battle, is not just historically inaccurate but also criminal in my opinion. Fan fact: Themistocles had 270 ships in the battle of Salamis not just 50, the disadvantage was still there though because the Persians had 1k plus. Persians ships were Triremes of Phonecian design.

A note about the two ships ramming the same one from opposite sides, this is recorded to have happened at least once, at "battle of chios" in 201BCE. Here the vessel of the Macedonian admiral, a Decereme or 10 banked ship, accidentally got caught on a ship passing close to it and struck it amidship, with its ram stuck above the other vessels waterline. She was unable to pull away and was immobilised, two quinquiremes seized the opportunity both ramming her and sinking her.

So a note about baliste on ships: few ships in the ancient world ever had siege weapons on board, and never on something as small as a trireme. quinqueremes, which did exist at the time, did sometimes have prow mounted artillery but it made them extremely dangerous to sail in even the best of conditions. In a storm… well, Poseidon is a greedy god and quinqueremes cost the equivalent of a heavy cruiser a hundred years ago.

The first mentions of any throwing devices on ancient ships date back to Alexander the Great period (some two centuries after events of the film) and it were Romans (some 1,5 centuries later) who perfected the craft. So yes, totally anachronistic 😁

At 12:04 he asked if the persians had any Balistae and that couldn't habe happened. Firstly most Balistae are to large or cumbersome for their ships (the small ones are called scorpions) and secondly the persians did never have any because Balistae were roman (or first iterations were hellenic greek) and didn't excist at that time around 500 B.c the first examples or the prototypes were dated back to 300 B.c (arround the time of Alexander the (not so) great). This is just some knwoledge about historicall accuracy and not a attack (many people take it the wrong way, so sorry). Also sorry for my bad english I am not a native english speaker and have a great day.

8:26 well I suppose those ships should still be able to float since they have a good width (to my assumption) and that should give them a decent buoyancy and they shouldn't capsize. Now about those bows: Well I think they are just massive brakes on the front end of your ship (which is bad) but they should be able still to sail (much less efficient of course). Also the fastening of them must be rather complicated and could be a major structural hazard. And well the "W" shape literally pushes water straight into your ship which means that the inner connection must really sustain a lot of force (so fast speed sailing is out of the question). Furthermore water will spill up on deck bow and push the front end of the ship down into the water which again acts as a brake. So if by some deep magic you can actually make such a 3-bow ship (or are there just 2?) and not make it tear apart by it self, then yes it would work. Edit: okay on a later shot we see those ships being rather long and thin so they should be rather fast and immobile, but I still think that buoyancy shouldn't be a problem. Edit 2: on later inspection it appears that the Persian ships have tomblehome, which increased their stability, so they should be pretty stable ships

Did anybody notice, that "Greeks" use center grip shields like Vikings/Germanics? There is no aspis/hoplon to be found in ther entire army. Hoplon was strapped to your army, not held in your fist, while wide rim of your shield rested firmly on your shoulder at all times. In proper formation, it was the only armor you would need.
@johndembowski9518
@johndembowski9518 4 жыл бұрын
So, just read your comment, and just thought I'd add something: The Hoplon thing might be a mistake dating from bad/careless roman historians. As you clearly know, Greeks referred to their shields as an aspis. Who used "Hoplon"? Well the greeks, but NOT for shield. I think the prevailing understanding of the term today is that "Hopla" (I don't speak ancient greek... so bare with the spelling errors when they occur) is simply a term for military equipment, a.k.a. "arms". So Hoplite means Armsman. Just like the term was used through the middle ages. Until about a year ago, I had always heard/believed the other version of Hoplite, that they were so named for their shields, so I just wanted to share. Coming back to the substance of your comment, I wouldn't say the shield is ALL you need... I'd certainly want a helmet as well!

Honestly, if Mad Nutter Lady had just committed in any of these battles, and just sent in all of her heavy ships, while it wouldn’t be graceful or strategically incredible, eventually just by simple attrition they’d win. You’d expect that a close up massed brawl would be great territory for these kinds of heavy hitters. The smaller and more nimble Greek ships wouldn’t be able to move and the Persian ship’s larger crews would be able to overwhelm the Greeks.

fun fact about Roman ship history: if the story is correct, it goes that Rome and it's power was centered around land based combat meaning that their naval power was minuscule, on the other side with Carthage their power was at the sea so naturally through one of the Punic wars Carthage held the sea and destroyed any ship with Roman colours, one day some Romans came upon a Carthaginian ship which was destroyed on a beach seeing this the Roman government had the ship extensively studied and recreated the ships were then made on a large scale thus evening the odds at sea if not even more so with their boarding techniques of which were very new

Slight nit-pick: At the end you refer to this director as a "fan-artist". You might be correct, I didn't bother looking to see if this is actually the case. BUT, if you are basing this, as I am, on just guessing at the direction of... the direction (sorry, couldn't help myself), then I'd say it is far more likely that the director is more likely to be attempting to emulate the "snyder style" for the sake of the brand/product recognition than out of a personal desire to emulate Snyder. I'd assume that whatever his own style is, he was handed the assignment and told by a corporate board: Use slow motion, gore, over the top action! Make it like the other one, people liked that. Of course your point is perfectly valid regardless: It was a poor imitation in which the copy uses some of the key elements of the original without really knowing (or seemingly caring) about how they fit together in the way which makes the original such a distinct visual style.

Actually, the way they're dressed isn't totally opposite from the way the hoplites in the later periods dressed. Armor was largely exchanged for lighter tunics and some went barechested into battle, as their massive hoplon was considered more than enough to do the job for them. So while a bit silly and over the top, it's not as silly as it might first seem, historically speaking. Though, that, of course, considered that men would be fighting in the phalanx (a tight formation) and not running about the place.

The Spartans didn't even have a fleet until the Peloponnesian war. And guess who paid for it? The PERSIANS! That's right. I have to disagree with your analysis at minute 14. while if the plan goes well, you are correct the soldiers on the ship are not needed, keeping a strong contingent on the ships would be very useful if the plan goes awry and the Persians try to board the ship in a breakout maneuver. keeping them on board until it's clear what the Persians are doing seems like a wise backup plan

18:20 Honestly i think those 2 guards are screwed. I mean, if they walk in to see Crazy Lady get penetrated by Archmoron's sword, they'd prolly get executed. And if they don't walk in and Crazy Lady gets penetrated by an actual sword, they'd prolly get executed.

Crazily enough, something like this actually happened in real life. On the night Joseph Stalin suffered a stroke that ultimately lead to his death, there were guards stationed outside his room. However, despite hearing strange noises, they never went inside to investigate because Stalin had told them that he was not to be disturbed. So they were terrified that if they went in and nothing was wrong, Stalin would have them executed because that's how much of a blood drunk lunatic he was.

In the English history books I've read, "galley" is a general term and is used to refer to any sail and oar powered ships from antiquity to the late medieval period. Particularly those types of ships which were used in the Mediterranean Sea; I have never seen or heard any historian refer to a Viking longship as a galley.

@@kingemperorpenguin1 btw i never supposed viking longships to be called galley, galley are mediterranean row and ram warships that could be sailed for long distances too, and are encountered from the middleages onward the ancient world knows a lot of different shiptypes of that kind but the trireme was the most dominant one and most extensively used by greeks. in that role in that era, later much larger vessels were actualy built. but it is quite unclear how large those were

They said they have fifty ships; they have more than fifty men judging by the scenes in this film. Unfortunately, the film never tells us how many men are under Themosticles' command.

btw the galley is the medieval and onwards iteration of light row ship with ramming funcition they didn't exist in antiquity, not that this applies ot this fiction work of art aexactly as shiptype is a rather subjective theme here

a couple of caveats, charging into an enemy into men that are busy doing something else is good if you don't want them to form into a battle line and drag the battle out allowing the rest of the enemy force to land and flank you or land somewhere else and take out what you are trying to defend. fighting a small force against a large force is quite possible depending on the terrain, such as guarding a pass. shipbuilding techniques at the time the battle was supposed to happen didn't use a single piece of wood for the keel, but used multiple pieces of wood. this made larger ships less able to handle bad weather. it was a shit movie that was just made due to the success of 300.
