In Canada we have both National and Provincial Parks. They are very well maintained, most often in beautiful wilderness locations. The most popular ones need to be booked well in advance and can be pricey. I recommend staying off the most travelled routes and finding the less used ones. Most of them have pit toilets but are well- ventilated and maintained. There are also many privately owned campgrounds which are quite expensive. There’s more but let’s keep those less public. In Alberta many of the small towns have city-run campgrounds. It would be wise to get a National Parks pass which can make your camping less expensive.

In Canada (Nova Scotia) I've used iOverlander and it's pretty good! I've found it tends to be updated by other users pretty regularly so most spots I've gone to have been as described :)

If you make it to the Canadian Provinces of Saskatchewan or Manitoba, the most rustic camping areas are typically Provincial Park or National Park campgrounds. They typically have full amenities, including bathrooms and showers. The catch is that they can be hard to get into because they are so busy in our short summer seasons. You can book sites online for the Provincial Parks, and might have to call ahead to the National Parks (Prince Albert National Park (Sask) and Riding Mountain National Park (Manitoba)). Hope you enjoy the endless landscapes of Canada!

As a Canadian it’s pretty easy to find spots. 90% of Canada is crown land which means land owned by the queen. So public land… as a Canadian we can camp 21 days at one time on crown land. As visitors you might need a permit depending on province.

Camping in the winter will be tricky in Alberta and BC lots of campgrounds shut down and there are only a few open in communities but most trailers aren’t all season and we winter them. Also many campsites fill up on opening day(you can pre book most campsites April 1) and most popular ones fill up within minutes. Jasper or banff especially.

i’ve been living in a van around america for the past year and i religiously use iOverlander and FreeRoam! freeroam is awesome because there’s filters for BLM and USFS land which in the states you can park up on that land for up to 2 weeks! there’s also filters on ioverlander to find water, a dump station and any parkup you could imagine!! also try a chai latte w vanilla&lavender! so amazing! also the song you use to wake each other up i’m living for lol!

I did a 17 day trip up the entire East coast of the US and into Canada sleeping in the back of my Jeep. IOverlander app was very helpful in finding not only urban and scenic camp sites, but also places to get water, laundry, bathrooms etc. It’s got a user interface where other people update with their experiences as well 😊 love y’all & can’t wait for your US/CA adventures!! If you make it down to Baton Rouge or New Orleans, Louisiana I’d be happy to give you a list of things to do!!
