Kings and Losses

I caught plenty of fish, but this was one of those bittersweet days where lots of fish got away and prized equipment was broken. It's all part of fishing offshore on a kayak, and you have to deal with whatever happens and just keep going. It's a good reminder that paying attention to the small details can save you from problems on the water. I didn't notice that the line wrapped around the rod tip until it was too late. On the bright side our local waters are full of fish and the clarity is great!

I find that bleeding the fish tends to draw sharks, so instead I put the fish on ice. The cold pushes the blood away from the meat and into the internal organs, giving me the same benefit.

It's a Rainshadow jigging rod that I was using for trolling just to get some catches under it's belt until I can fish where jigging is an option. The line got wrapped around the tip and once a fish got on, well you know the rest...

How's Spanish eating compared to Kings? Nice trip, I know the feeling...lost $40 in vertical jigs 2 weeks ago. 5:13 love seeing the SPJ rod take that sudden slam...they are amazing blanks for sure. I used a 6'2" Ocean's Legacy SPJ PE-2 rod off shore 2 weeks ago. Landed a 13lb 29" red snapper.

Spanish macks have a light pink meat that has a pleasing taste. You can grill it “on the half shell” covered in Italian dressing for a different but tasty treat.

Chef Salt, A lot of people don't care to eat Kingfish, but you catch & keep, frequently. What are some of your favorite "recipes"?

Actually I give most of it away, but the recipients are repeat customers. The key is to keep the fish cool on the water, and remove the red meat when filleting, then freeze them in Ziploc bags filled with water so that no air touches the meat. When you cook it, cut pieces about 1/3" thick, dip in egg and then in finely crushed Ritz crackers. Fry until the pieces are your preferred shade of brown. It's simple and people will ask for seconds. If you keep a little of the red meat on your fillets they'll have a strong taste that turns most folks away. Remove all the red and what's left is good stuff.

The two larger rods are 7’ Adrenaline 20-30lb rods with Siegler SG reels and 20lb braid. The jigging rod is. 7’ Fluffy Fishy Killa jigging rod with a Seigler SGN and 20lb braid.
