"A 6:30 tee time and nine holes with Pharaoh!" What a word of caution not to forget Jesus' radical calling towards extreme generosity and living a life of humble material means for the sake of God's kingdom enacted on earth! Many Christians in wealthy countries like this one are having a hard time "watch[ing] out for the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod" (Mark 8:15).

Love the song and the message. It discouraged me to see some people in the chat immediately turn it into a political argument. Yes I want the church to seek justice and bridge economic, racial, and cultural divides through the news of Christ, but too often the church conforms and makes Jesus somehow secondary to the “social justice” mission. Jesus is our identity, through Him we are one body, that’s the gospel unity, don’t let earthly things break us up. Political parties, skin color, language, age, gender, are all things that are meant to divide us, but let’s show the world that the word of God transforms people of all tribes and tongues, making us brothers and sisters in Christ.

There is so much truth in this song, and yet, I find myself worried that the bitterness and discouragement nestled in the hearts of many of us will interpret this as a call to action on our behalf rather than God. Judgement and justice belongs to the Lord and the Lord alone, which does not mean that we should be quiet, but it does mean that we should watch what the verb “burning” Babylon down creates in our hearts and minds. Not once in the Bible has God endorsed his people to rebel and burn down the oppressors, just like with pharaoh In exodus. He called his people to freedom and prosperity, not to revolution and overthrow those in power so that those without power could taste it. Such a great divide, absent of love and truth will not align our hearts closer to Jesus, but closer to that of a conquest for a cause. My heart grieves as I see the pain of those who aren’t heard and the lack of grace from those speaking loudest. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. Jeremiah 29:7 about Babylon
@pabloflores82963 жыл бұрын
@@jakemosher243 I think you are confusing the historical Babylon with "Babylon the Great" from Revelations. The verse you are citing refers to when the israelites had been taken in captivity and forced to travel to Babylon, the kindom that conquered them, beacuse of their sins. That's why the prophet says to pray for them, beacuse they would be there for a while. But the second Babylon is an alegorical figure, a violent and perversed place, where the Lord tells his people to leave and to not take part on it's sins. Then He orders to destroy it and to burn it. These two are not the same thing, beacuse one is an actual place with people, and the other one is evil itself. So I don't think we should pray for "that" Babylon (or the first Babylon, beacuse it doesn't exists anymore) but for the people. PD: English is not my native language and Im not an expert by any means so if someone wants to correct me (theologically or grammatically) feel free to do it so we can all learn from it. ADDED PARAGRAPH IN EDIT: That said, in my opinion I don't think the songwriters are incinting to riot, beacuse the Babylon in Revelations is a concept. There is debate in what it means in Revelations: the world, Jerusalem, Rome, the Catholic Church, Church-Goverment relationships, etc. But in every interpretation, is an evil place oposed to God. For me, the song is hinting to a church that has become superficial and more interested in the ways on the world in detriment of our faith. It is a message present in the Bible days and in our days. And even then it doesn't incite to burn down anybody concrete beacuse a "rich church but poor in spirit" is present in ourselves. This song is a protest and a warning to being part of a shallow church. "Burn Babylon" is used as "leaving" and condemning that way of being christian. PD2: Grammar corrections PD3: Another paragraph

@johncalebthompson89943 жыл бұрын
@@pabloflores8296 I think for broader context, its worth noting that the Revelation passage is building on the prophesy from Daniel, who was at the time exiled in historical Babylon and actually a royal official. Babylon the Great in Revelations is still directly tied to Babylon the civilization, even though it serves a prophetic purpose as well. I think the love-hate tension actually came from the understanding by the prophets that Babylon was an evil place, but that was nevertheless being used by God to correct Israel. This is why Babylon is represented as a mother of prostitutes in Revelation. She has a purpose by God to raise Israel, but she raises evil and idolatry instead. This is in line with the understanding of Babylon’s role The clearest difference I see between the actual Babylon and the prophetic Babylon is that the actual Babylon was exalted by God as judgment upon his unfaithful people, but the prophetic Babylon will be up against faithful people, and so God will make her low. Unfortunately (or maybe not), God did the work of dismantling actual Babylon, and Revelation makes clear that prophetic Babylon is successful in persecuting Gods people until God steps in as well. In any case it is only God who works on behalf of his people to dismantle Babylon.

@@trextonhaldeman323 Exodus 34:6. Just before God dictates the law to Moses. Parts of it are repeated throughout the Bible, though. Some places as a thanks to God for punishing oppressors, some places as pleas to God that he not punish people.
