Can Ohio State become America's Team in this new era of college football?
Beau Bishop joins Doug Lesmerises on this Kings of Columbus to answer this question. They attack it this way.
First, is college football definitely the second-most popular sport in America? A breakdown.
Then, could Ohio State become college football's defining team with Nick Saban retired from Alabama?
Finally, Doug outlines Four Golden Ages of Ohio State football. Are the Buckeyes about to enter the Fifth Golden Age?
It's America's birthday, so Doug and Beau dig into the idea of the Buckeyes as a new America's team.
Thanks for joining Kings of Columbus.

Only if they get caught cheating and Ryan Day is suspended for half the regular season. That’s how you become America’s Team™️

@robertjulieannanalett1691 UM offered cheating HC 125mill not to leave! That’s a fraction of what OSU spent on a bunch of players collectively. Spending NIL money is 100% legal. You got a problem playing within the rules M*ch*g*n Man?

As a Wolverine fan, I can honestly say this was the best OSU show I've ever seen. I don't know if this is the start of a new era for Bucs football, but you are right that they have thrown everything at the problem including the kitchen sink! Just don't discount Michigan, Oregon, USC and Penn State completely because those teams want to win too and they have the same tools that OSU has to realize their program goals. What a great time to be a college football fan!!!

Insane that three consecutive 11-2 seasons could be considered part of a "Dark Era." Really a testament to how much success tOSU had had for generations now.
@jdburch

The 11-2 record is only a part of the calculus that goes into “dark era”. It’s losing to Michigan 3 times in a row after dominating them for nearly 20 years.

@allensaunders449 I agree. But there are other teams that other fan bases root for. Especially if they are playing well and make social media noise. Look at colorado. FGCU in basketball when they made the tournament and went on that run. No one outside of Ohio state likes ohio state. There are teams people like outside of their own. Ohio state ain't one of them!

Being "America's Team" doesn't mean you are the most liked team, it means that when someone thinka of the sport, that Team is the first thing folks think of, they are the prime representative - loved or hated you are the icon of the sport. Ohio State could certainly be that.

Those who anoint themselves "America's Team" are jerk water fans. Dallas fans didn't call the Cowboys "America's team". Sports media was the first to do so.

Loved the episode but you're wrong about the NFL not being a national sport. A key reason you didn't mention was fantasy football, which can cause people in Ohio to be super invested in a random Denver-Houston game because their starting fantasy RB is on one of the teams, for example. Much like betting, fantasy sports is huge for getting otherwise uninterested people up watch a game, and that's something college football is missing

I think you misunderstood. They said all other pro sports other than the NFL aren’t national. The NFL is the most national sport of all.

That can only happen where OSU wins a natty and uses that to start a deep, long run. This class is in the edge of being an all time class for buckeye school history and if things fall right will rival all time class. IF they string back to back top classes then the stage is set to become that ALABAMA level dynasty type of run. Day is young enough to go on a decade plus run and still be a relatively young coach

You're missing one big element what makes the most watched college football game it takes Ohio State and Michigan it doesn't happen with Michigan Iowa or Ohio State Penn State. One other question is Ohio state closer to being the Golden Age or the Cooper age. Because like it or not we're actually 1/3 into it

Complete and total ignorance. This is a FACT. Copper was not fired for losing to Michigan. Cooper was fired for going 14-10 in his last 2 seasons. Let me know when Day goes 14-10. LOLOL

I disagree with both of you on the pre '83 era. The 1958- the 70s CFB was MUCH more of a regional sport. The big time matchups between the top of the sport usually met in a bowl matchup ONLY towards the end of that era. Prior to the Big Ten allowing its members to play in other bowl games, you went to the rose bowl or you were at home watching the new years day games. You guys are too young to have an adults perspective of that era. That era had some all time HOF legends coaching who did some incredible things. But I cant go with the Alabama was the face of CFB during that era... The sport was far too regional to make that kind of statement.

Yeah I think Doug missed it there. The 50s-70s was the “blue blood” era. Like if you look at when the blue bloods became blue bloods it’s that period of time cause Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Bama, USC, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan all dominated their conferences. From 46-79 those 8 schools won all but 8 national titles. They won 17 Heismans. It’s very much the blue blood era. Bama won the most titles but that era was not defined just by Bama. It was defined just as much by Ohio State vs Michigan. Winner of that vs USC in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma vs Nebraska. Winner of that playing in the Orange Bowl. Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Bama in the Sugar Bowl. Notre Dame playing any of those teams in those bowl games. Then one of those 8 being the National Champ
